The slides from the local WordPress meet up group at Sofia, Bulgaria 2017 - March 22th. The slides are not very "slideshare-friendly", because there was more speaking on top of them, but It's always good to have them here :) The general topic was - know your tools and write in a scalable way. That is to separate your code properly into components, to name it in a meaningful way or to use abstract modifiers.

Sass is being replaced by PostCSS which is being adopted by projects like Bootstrap and Foundation. PostCSS allows for features not possible in Sass through plugins, is modular for faster development, and is significantly faster than other preprocessors. Examples show how custom syntax can be transpiled to CSS using PostCSS plugins and how its modular plugins encourage experimentation and development of new CSS features.

The WP REST API infrastructure was introduced in WordPress 4.4. The introduction of this infrastructure allows WordPress developers to now use WordPress as a headless CMS. A headless CMS has its frontend component (the head) stripped and removed from its backend, and what remains is a backend delivering content via an API. Some common use cases for headless CMS are as follows:

Websites and web apps built with MVC-style JavaScript frameworks
Developers can install the WP REST API plugin to expose endpoints for WordPress for posts, pages, media and users. Developers can also extend the WordPress core REST infrastructure to register their own endpoints for custom post types and WordPress options.
The WP REST API plugin will expose database content via JSON. This data can be used by developers to create sites using JavaScript frameworks such as React and also use the JSON data in mobile apps.
Bronson will explain and demonstrate how you can use WordPress and the WP REST API to create a website that uses React on the frontend and WordPress on the backend as a headless CMS.

In particular, when you work on your own, its critical to have things like billing, time tracking and project management as a natural and seamless part of your workflow.
This session aims to be a whistle stop tour of some useful open source tools and subscription solutions I have found to be well worth their costs - including how they can be used effectively together to allow you to make the most efficient use of your time designing and developing Drupal sites.
I work as a remote contractor & consultant and my clients are drupal shops and companies needing web sites and systems designed, built, themed and/or maintained. These tools and services work for me to help stay organized and on top of my workload and help me to manage my responsibilities across multiple clients and timezones effectively.
The material in this session is geared more towards individual freelancers although much of it will be relevant for larger drupal shops and teams too.

It is my aim to introduce ( in some cases briefly) tools and services that have made a difference to me that may have the potential to add to and improve your existing workflows.
Front end frameworks
Foundation is a popular front-end framework for building responsive, mobile-first sites. It includes a grid system, pre-built components, and is designed to be customizable. Developers can integrate Foundation through CSS, Sass, or a Rails gem. Using a framework like Foundation allows developers to build interfaces faster while maintaining quality and flexibility.
An Introduction to CSS Frameworks

APEX application deployment is mostly done by exporting the application and importing it into the target environment.
But what if your team continuously develops (as they should), where do you stop developing to start preparing your release-deployment? You should be able to deploy based on features; without your developers having to halt their development.
Using the deployment-method explained in this presentation you will be able to do just that.
The method includes things like Code versioning (GIT), Feature-tickets (Jira), Code Review (Quality), Automated Deployment using Jenkins and Flyway. When implemented you will be able to successfully and predictively deploy your APEX applications (including underlying database objects) to the different deployment-environments.
With a few modifications you can even upgrade the methodology to be a "continuous delivery" methodology.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
