1) Alana Yaksich died at age 5 1/2 from influenza related complications despite being a previously healthy child. Her father Zack Yaksich believes she would have survived if she had received the flu vaccine.
2) Devastated by Alana's death, Yaksich and his family formed the Alana's Foundation nonprofit in 2009 to increase awareness about the severity of the flu virus and the importance of vaccination, especially for children.
3) The flu can have serious consequences like hospitalization or death even in otherwise healthy children. The Alana's Foundation aims to make flu vaccines more accessible through free clinics in schools and underserved communities.
