UNDERSTANDING COTTON
Cotton is a natural fibre that comes from the cotton plant. An evergreen shrub, the cotton
plant is indigenous to tropical and subtropical parts of the world, including the
Americas, Africa, and India. Cotton has been used to make fabric for centuries, and it is
one of the most popular fabrics in the world.
Cotton is soft, durable, and comfortable, making it ideal for a variety of clothing items

COTTON PROCESSING: FROM FIBRE TO FABRIC
Cotton is a natural fibre that is obtained from the seedpod of the cotton plant. The
processing begins with the picking of the cotton bolls from the plant.
The bolls are then cleaned to remove any impurities such as dirt, leaves, and seeds. The
next step is called ginning, where the cotton fibres are separated from the seeds.
The cotton fibres are then spun into yarn, which can be used to weave or knit fabrics.
The process of turning cotton into fabric is a fascinating one that involves a number of

HARVESTING AND GINNING
Cotton harvesting and ginning are two of the most important steps in the journey from
fibre to fabric. Cotton harvesting is the process of picking the cotton bolls from the
plant, which can be done by hand or by machine.
Once the cotton has been harvested, it needs to be ginned – this is when the fibres are
separated from the seeds. Ginning can also be done by hand or by machine, and it’s an
essential step in preparing cotton for spinning into yarn or fabric.
SPINNING
The spinning of cotton is a process that has been used for centuries to create fabric from
the fibres of the cotton plant. The fibres are then combed or carded to align them in a
single direction.
They are then spun into thread or yarn using a spinning wheel or machine. The resulting
thread or yarn can be used to weave fabric or knit clothing.
WEAVING/KNITTING

knitted by interlacing
looped strands with needles
or woven into particular
types of textiles by
weaving the strands
together on a loom.
