Ferrets originated from domesticated polecats and have been domesticated since around 4 BC. They are part of the weasel family and unlike wild black-footed ferrets, domestic ferrets have been bred as companion animals. Ferrets make ideal pets as they are playful, don't mark territory, and are suitable for people with allergies or who live in small spaces. However, they require care and certain supplies like food, water, litter boxes, bedding, toys and occasional baths to keep them healthy and entertained as companions.
