Quolls
Quolls are carnivorous marsupials, but their pouches are different from other marsupials. Instead of
pouches like the kangaroo, they have a fold of skin on their bellies. They have long pink noses and
white spots on their brown fur. They are nocturnal, but like to lay in the sun. Quolls eat a mix of
seed, fruit, insects, frogs, birds and small mammals. When their babies are born, they are only the
size of a grain of rice. Marsupial babies attach themselves to a nipple when they are born. Quolls
have up to 30 babies at a time, but only six will survive as she only has six nipples to feed them.
How tiny is one grain of rice?
Rhinoceroses (rhinos) are the second largest land mammal. They are ungulates, which means they
have hooves and are related to horses and zebras. A group of rhinos are herds or a crash. They have

when danger approaches. A symbiotic relationship happens when two different animals help each
other. Rhinos are herbivores – some like grass, others like the leaves from trees and bushes. ... Show

Bovines are cows or from the cattle family. They have long fur that hangs down to their ankles. Yaks
can climb higher than any other mammal and survive in freezing weather. They have long, curved
horns that are almost three feet long. Horns are used for self–defense and as a tool to move snow to
reach the plants underneath. They can eat up to 10 pounds of grass or hay a day. Some yaks are
domesticated. Domesticated animals are tame and pets or live on a farm. They can carry heavy loads
through mountains, or pull farm equipment. Yaks produce milk, which can be made into butter,
cheese, and yogurt. Their wool is crafted into rope, belts, and bags. Yak dung (poop) is dried into
patties and put on a stove to burn. Yak dung does not smell and can reach high temperatures,
keeping a room warm for a long time. Would you burn yak dung to stay warm during the

Anteaters Research Paper
Anteaters are edentates. Edentates are animals that do not have teeth. Anteaters do not eat apples,
but they eat about 30,000 ants and terminates a day. The anteater uses its large sharp claws to rip
open an anthill or termite mound. Then he uses a very long, sticky tongue to catch them. Anteaters
walk on their knuckles so their long claws don't hurt them. A baby anteater is called a pup and rides
on its mom's back for about a year. When an anteater feels threatened, it will stand on its hind legs,
hold its arms out wide and show its claws. Can you stand up tall, hold out your arms and spread
your fingers to make yourself as big and scary?

3.14 In Life Of Pi
The name "Pi" in the novel "Life of Pi" was very significant in the story because it develops the
character of Pi himself throughout the story to show his complexity. Pi is not only a name, but it is
also used frequently in math as the number 3.14, which never changes. However, this number is
only rounded to this value, there are actually too many decimals that make it hard for people to
understand, so rounding it to a simple 3.14 makes it easier. The characteristics of this Pi relates to
the character in a way. For example, the infinite amounts of decimals in 3.14 represents the different
kinds of reality Pi has considered about the world. There are infinite point of views one can view the
world as there are infinite decimals to numbers. This name develops Pi into more than a protagonist,

Owning a zoo as a family business is a perfect way for Pi to get to know the animals as a child in a
spiritual way and establish his connection to the zoo animals like Richard Parker. In other words, it
gives a more natural feel to the story and it's religious themes. Although, if Pi's family was in a
different business like construction, then the story would be in a much more different state. Pi's
family would be at more of a risk when it came to safety on the job. Also Pi would have never got to
know animals in a spiritual way as a child and to obtain that spiritual connection, which would make
it harder for his religious beliefs. The family zoo business also contributes to the theme of ritual or
routine. Throughout the story, animals are known to have the same rituals or patterns everyday. If
the pattern is changed then something is different. Humans are the same. They follow a routine
everyday as animals do, thus establishing a connection between humans and

Two Toed Sloth Pauli Summary
"SLOTH": DEADLY SIN OR NATURAL SELECTION? According to the Bible, Sloth is
considered to be one of the seven deadly sins. In that perspective has the "lazy" mammal,
Hoffmann's two–toed sloth, been punished by nature and natural selection? The article "Mating
system of Hoffmann's two–toed sloth" by M. Z. Peery and J. N. Pauli, reveals some interesting
information on this low–mobility mammal, its mating systems and preferences. Nevertheless, the
results are not surprising. The research has been conducted in 2010–2011 in Costa Rica, in three
habitat types (cacao farm, tropical forest, and cattle pasture). The researchers captured and marked
157 individual sloths either with radiocollars or with temporary paint on their backs. Sloths captured
were of both sexes and various age categories (juveniles, subadults and adults). They then quantified
home range of all categories of males and females. Not surprisingly, the adult male home ranges
included the geometric centre of each adult female. Using relatedness as the dependent variable, and
distance as an independent variable, they wanted to examine whether species–specific characters
and environmental factors shape mating systems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sloths are medium Sized animals belonging to the families of two–toed sloths and three–toed sloths.
Sloths are classified as failovers as the bulk of their diets consist of buds, tender shoots, and leaves ,
mainly of cecropia trees. Some two–toed sloths have been documented as eating insects, small
reptiles, and birds as a small supplement of their diets. They have made extraordinary adaptations to
an arboreal browsing lifestyle. As much as two–thirds of a well–fed sloth's body weight consist of

Endangered Animals: The Three–Toed Sloth
The Bradypus Pygmaeus, also known as the pygmy three–toed sloth, is one of the strangest
creatures in the world, but unfortunately like most animals they have been greatly impacted by the
negligent actions of humanity. The pygmy sloth is "listed as Critically Endangered as this species
has a very restricted range, being found on only one very small island less than 5 km² in size, and
there is likely a continuing decline in the quality of habitat and area of occupancy due to habitat
degradation" (Voirin, Smith, Chiarello, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When they remove waste, the sloths do a routine called the poop dance. They descend from the tree
to the ground, hug the base of the tree, shake their hips side to side, and relief themselves. As they
do their business, their smile tends to widen just a bit and their eyes defocus. In addition, most sloths
become sexually mature around three years of age. They use loud vocalizations as mating calls due
to their bad eyesight. After finding a mate, baby sloths develop in their mothers for six to twelve
months. Baby sloths cling to their mother's underside and remain with them for a year before living
on their own. The average life expectancy of sloths ranges from thirty to forty years. Although there
is not much known specifically on the pygmy sloth, scientists can infer much about them by using

Essay about Great Expectations, Life of Pi and the Great...
English Literature Summer Task
The Great Gatsby, Life of Pi and Great Expectations: The Opening Chapters
The opening chapters of each of these three books are both similar and different in many ways, and
succeed to keep the reader interested enough to carry on their journey with Pip, Nick or Pi.
The way characterisation is put forward in these three novels is rather similar, in the fact that all
three are written in the first person, giving the impression that the character in question is telling
their story directly to you, the reader. Similarly, all three characters open with a description of
themselves and their lives; Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby stating facts of his childhood and
education before going on to talk about his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of these analyses differ greatly in detail and style.
Across the three novels, a variation of language techniques is used to establish the correct mood
within the first chapter. The Great Gatsby is slow going to begin with, and the reader wonders where
the chapter will lead. Gatsby's name is mentioned several times within the first few pages, but
nothing more is said of him until his name comes up in conversation with that of Miss Baker. This
then sets a curious and intrigued mood, and makes the reader wonder who and what Gatsby has to
do with Nick, and how the story will develop. There are many sub–plots, such as Tom's "woman in
London", that also create curiosity from the reader. At the very end of the chapter, the appearance
and then sudden disappearance of Gatsby ends the chapter on a cliff–hanger, and therefore creates
suspense and suspicion. Within Life of Pi, rhetorical questions are used to involve the reader and
make them wonder what is coming next. I believe the mood within this first chapter is most
awkward and strange, and feels almost as though the reader is intruding on a very personal story, or
thought process. The epigraph immediately creates a depressed and down–tone mood to the story;
however it does increase the desire to know what DID happen to Pi to

Deforestation In The Amazon Rainforest
Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest not only harms the forest, but it also harms the animals in
the forest, the humans outside the forest, and Arctic Animals far North. Deforestation effects all life
on Earth in an extremely negative way. Within the forest, deforestation destroys the homes of the
forest's inhabitants. Animals with habitat sensitivity such as the Three–Toed Sloth will be forced to
evacuate their homes and will perish from excessive amounts of stress. Animals that depend on the
large trees such as Scarlet Macaws will have their homes (and nests) destroyed. Animals that are

Three Toed Sloth Research Paper
A sloth's life seems pretty sweet, right? You get to hang out in trees all day, munching on food,
sleeping all the time, and moving real slow to blend in with your surroundings. For a sloth, Sunday
is every day. Laziness is just the sloth way.
Sloths are tropical mammals that live in Central and South America. They use their long claws to
hang onto branches while they feast on the leaves that other animals can't reach. Unfortunately for
the sloth, their long claws that makes walking on the ground difficult, so they spend most of their
time in the tall trees.
There are two categories of sloths. The two–toed sloth is slightly bigger than the three–toed sloth,
though they share many of the same features. They are about the size of a medium–sized dog at
around 23 to 27 inches and 17.5 to 18.75. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are split into two groups: the two–toed sloths and the three–toed sloths.
There are two species of two–toed sloths and there are four species of three–toed sloths.
There used to be more species of sloths, but they've become extinct either through natural causes or
mankind destroying their environment.
Two–toed sloths have two toes, where as three–toed sloths have three toes.
A few of these remaining species are extremely close to extinction and if we don't do something
soon we may very well lose them good. They're becoming extinct from the destruction of their
natural habitat.
You already know how slow sloths are, they need time to thrive. The rate at which their environment
is being destroyed is too fast for the sloths to keep up! They are trying their best, bless them. But the
only way we can save them is by preserving the rainforests.
Their height when they stand is 2–2.5 ft and their weight is 8–17 lbs! Their life span is up to 10

Animals : Ended And Endangered Animals In Mangrove Forests
We are surrounded by endangered species every day. Majestic tigers grace posters on bedroom
walls, stuffed toy pandas stare blankly from shopping mall shelves; with the click of a button, we
can watch the elaborate courtship rituals of whooping cranes and the strategic hunting habits of the
Amur leopard on the Discovery Channel (Bove). No matter where we look, there are signs of
endangered and extinct animals that are going extinct because of us. Habitat loss is the greatest
threat to the variety of life on our planet and is overall the reason that there are less than 100 three–
toed sloths left on Earth. Confined to a single island, three–toed sloths' homes have been destroyed
by humans due to deforestation in mangrove forests, making three–toed sloths globally and critically
endangered. Humans see the mangrove forests that the sloths once lived on as a threat, killing off a
great variety of species. Humans are ravaging mangrove forests when they are not only beneficial to
our environment but are the homes of many critically endangered animals, including the sloth. Even
though mangrove forests are seen a waste of space, mangrove forests should be reserved for the
wildlife because a large variety of species are going extinct due to human folly, including the three–
toed sloth. This biome has been reduced to 7% of its original extent and the remaining forests are
highly fragmented (Washington).More than 35% of the world's mangroves are already gone. The

Planet Earth is home to over 13,000 known species of mammals and birds, thousands of reptile,
amphibian, and fish species, some 250,000 flowering plant species, and millions of insect and other
invertebrate species (Linzey, 2013, p. 102). Together these animals and plants form part of the great
natural wealth of the world with which society is entrusted to maintain, both for present generations
and those generations yet to come. Nevertheless, individuals choose to undervalue the worth of
certain species in their natural environment; one group in particular is the two extant families of
sloths. By failing to appreciate all the sloth has to offer, ignorance blossoms. Thus, rather than losing
the sloth in a numerical sense such as endangerment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As many individuals have begun to piece this all together, they are discovering that there is more to
the sloths than what meets the eye. With regard to internal features, compared to other mammals,
organs including the stomach, spleen, and liver are located in different areas, due to the upside–
down lifestyle (San Diego Zoo Global, 2009). The location of some organs may differ, but sloths
actually have a stomach that is chambered like a cow's. However, unlike cows and other ruminants,
the sloth's stomach is the center of its digestive process and is enormous in relation to the rest of its
body. Surprisingly, the sloth's stomach makes up 20 to 30 percent of its total body weight (Holdrege,
2009). Luckily, the sloth's four–chambered stomach is filled with bacteria, which helps ferment the
plant matter consumed. Even so, digestion takes a long time. In fact, the Sloth Sanctuary, Costa
Rica's original sloth rescue center, asserts that it is believed that sloths have the slowest digestive
rate of any mammal (Avey–Arroyo & Cliffe, n.d.). The true rate of food passage from ingestion to
excretion is still under debate. In order to get a better understanding of the sloth's digestion, R.
Cliffe, the Sloth Sanctuary's biologist, used a digestive marker called Carmine Red, derived from the
female Cochineal insect, to calculate how

As more tourist being visiting Panama and the surrounding islands, the pygmy sloths are at an
increase risk of endangerment. Due to the fact that this species of sloth can only be found on the Isla
Escudo de Verguas it is imperative that the government of Panama recognizes the endangerment of
the pygmy sloth and places more security on the island. The fate of the pygmy sloth depends largely
on whether or not additional steps are taken to protect Escudo de Veraguas. The island's current
protection status leaves open the possibility of future development and is vague as to who may
develop it. Declaring the island a wildlife refuge or national park would protect not only the pygmy
sloths, but also the other unique species found on the island.
A similar conservation legislation has been successfully enacted in the past by the government of
Panama to protect vulnerable island ecosystems. For example, Isla Iguana has been given the status
of "wildlife refuge," which protects the island's flora and fauna while also allowing tourism and
local use under the supervision of park rangers (Voirin, 2015). A similar status as a protected

the most common are the Choloepus (two–toed sloths) and the Bradypus (three–toed sloths). Within

These chambers aides in digesting the abundant amount of food they consume on a daily basis.
Because of their very low body temperature, 91 degrees Fahrenheit, and slow digestive system, they
do not need to eat all the time (Cliffe, etal 2015.) Although the majority of diet of the sloths is twigs,
fruit and berries, it takes a very long time to digest. This is not a very nutritional diet so the little
amount of movement expended by sloths is beneficial. The actual amounts of food intake (Cliffe,

multitude of different ways, some people see Christianity in a fantastic way, others say the religion
is shameful. "Christians are more likely to agree with Pi's atheist father who says, "Believing in
everything at the same time is the same as believing in nothing at all" (McAteer). Pi views God
together with religion as a marvelous matter throughout the novel. He has a conversation with Mr.
Kumar where they both share their different points of views. "Religion will save us...I don't believe
in religion. Religion is darkness" (Martel 34) As the reader can see in the quote before, Pi trust the

WIKIPEDIAARTICLE ABOUT SLOTHS
Sloths (/ˈsloʊθ/ sloh–th, /ˈslɒθ/ slo–th)[2] are medium–sized mammals belonging to the families
Megalonychidae (two–toed sloth) and Bradypodidae (three–toed sloth), classified into six species.
They are part of the order Pilosa and are therefore related to anteaters, which sport a similar set of
specialized claws. Extant sloths are arboreal (tree–dwelling) residents of the jungles of Central and
South America, and are known for being slow–moving, and hence named "sloths". Extinct sloth
species include many ground sloths, some of which attained the size of elephants.
Sloths make a good habitat for other organisms, and a single sloth may be home to moths, beetles,
cockroaches, ciliates, fungi, and algae.[3] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In most mammals, hairs grow toward the extremities, but because sloths spend so much time with
their legs above their bodies, their hairs grow away from the extremities to provide protection from
the elements while the sloth hangs upside down. In most conditions, the fur hosts two species of
symbiotic cyanobacteria, which provide camouflage.[7][8] Because of the cyanobacteria, sloth fur is
a small ecosystem of its own, hosting many species of non–parasitic insects. Sloths have short, flat
heads, big eyes; short snouts, long legs, and tiny ears. Some species have stubby tails (6–7 cm long).
Altogether, sloths' bodies usually are between 50 and 60 cm long.
Sloths' claws serve as their only natural defense. A cornered sloth may swipe at its attackers in an
effort to scare them away or wound them. Despite sloths' apparent defenselessness, predators do not
pose special problems: sloths blend in with the trees and, moving only slowly, do not attract
attention. Only during their infrequent visits to ground level do they become vulnerable. The main
predators of sloths are the jaguar, the harpy eagle, and humans. The majority of recorded sloth
deaths in Costa Rica are due to contact with electrical lines and poachers. Their claws also provide a
further unexpected deterrent to human hunters; when hanging upside–down in a tree, they are held
in place by the claws themselves and often do not fall down even if shot from below.

sloths have a higher metabolism, are better at thermoregulation and digestion and move more

they are able to digest a wider variety of foods such as fruits, insects, flowers, leaves and Cecropia

Two Toed Sloths Habitat
When determining the sloths' selectivity for each habitat, only the available habitats were included
in the calculation. An unavailabe habitat is one where it is uninhabitable due to a physical barrier.
For example, in Figure 1 in the lower left hand corner is a lowland secondary forest. Although the
sloths are able to live in such a environment, it is not included in the selection calculation since the
mountainous environment is physically preventing the sloths from inhabiting the area. Using the
Manly's alpha formula it was determined that the two toed sloth, Choloepus hoffmanni, was
selecting for the agriculture and old growth habitats, while selecting against the clear cut and
secondary forest habitat. The the three toed sloth, Bradypus ... Show more content on

With little to no vegetation there is no food available for the sloths to establish a presence. For this
reason both sloths select against clear cut regions. Although there are no sloths inhabiting the clear
cut it is included in the selection calculation because there is no physical barrier preventing the
sloths from inhabiting the area. C. hoffmanni is selecting for the agriculture region because the
availability of a food. Two toed sloth consume a varied diet of leaves and fruits(Dill–McFarland et
al. 2015). B. variegatus is selecting against the agriculture region because it can not consume the
fruits and leaves present in the region. This is because B. variegatus has a gut biome suited for a diet
of Cecropia leaves, while C. hoffmanni has a gut biome that supports consumption of a wider
variety of fruits and leaves (Dill–McFarland et al. 2015). Old growth regions are undisturbed forest
that have diverse tree species(White and Lloyed 1994; Zahler, Hino and Reed 2017). Both species
select for old growth area because there is food available for both sloths due to the diversity of tree
species. Because the variety of tree species in the old growth, C. hoffmanni is able to thrive;
furthermore, the presence Cecropia trees in old growth allow B. variegatus to maintain a presence.
Additionally, there is cover for both species of sloth to hide from predators further allowing both

Amazon Rain Forest : Tropical Climate
Tropical Rain Forests are the biomes with most biodiversity; the Amazon Rain Forest is the largest
rain forest in world and the most important. The Amazon Rain Forest stretches from the Andes
Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. The rain forest goes into eight countries including Brazil, Ecuador,
Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Colombia. (World Book) The Amazon has very unique climate,
biodiversity, and limiting factors. The Amazon has a tropical climate. Since the Amazon Rain Forest
is near the equator it is always likely to be hot and humid. The average temperature of the Amazon
Rain Forest is 80 degrees Fahrenheit. (World Book) Yet, the temperature feels much hotter due to
the constant humidity in the Amazon. The reason it is so humid in the Amazon is the rainfall the
Amazon receives. In the Amazon it rains around 60 to 175 inches a year. In addition, thunderstorms
happen in the Amazon around 200 days a year. In the areas nearest to equator there is constant
rainfall year round. (Facts on File) The Amazon is divided into 4 parts: the emergent layer, the
canopy, the understory, and the forest floor. The emergent layer is the part on top of the trees. This
area receives lots of sunlight, low humidity, and lots of wind. The canopy area is the part of the
tallest trees. This part still receives a lot of sunlight. After that section follows the understory and the
forest floor. The lower you get in the Amazon the less sunlight and humidity there is. (Facts on File)

Sloths Research Paper
Introduction Did you know that sloths can live up to 40 years! Sloths are mammals that live in the
rainforest near costa rica. Sloths are considered the slowest animals on earth, they can sleep up to 10
hours a day, and barely moves from it's comfy tree branch. Sloths are some of the most interesting
animals on earth, here are some interesting facts about one of the greatest animals, sloths! The sloth
is interesting because of where it lives, how it survives, and how it has been impacted by humans.
Paragraph 2. Habitat
Sloths hang out in the trees in tropical rainforests. Sloths can live anywhere from Venezuela to the
Amazon basin.. Since sloths are tree dwelling animals predators have a harder time getting to them
while they're lounging in the trees. Living in the jungle has its ups and downs. One good thing is
that there is plenty of food! Sloths snack on the leaves and eat other small insects. A downside is that
there are many predators lurking in there habitat.
Paragraph 3. Adaptation and Survival ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since sloths never adapted to walking, they crawl instead. Swimming is one of sloths strongest
assets. Since sloths have a very low body temperature there metabolism is much slower than most
animals. This makes them very slow, an upside to being so slow is that potential predators don't
notice them since they rarely move. A downside to being so slow is that they have a harder time
getting away from their predators. Two–Toed sloths are nocturnal animals, but Three–Toed sloths
are diurnal, they stay out during the day. Over the years sloths have been changing and adapting to
living in the forests. Sloths stomachs and fur make it perfect for their environment, their stomachs
are made just for digesting leaves, and they're fur is camouflaged to hide from

Zoos In Life Of Pi
L.O.P. Essay Quiz In part one of Life of Pi the zoo is first introduced in a figurative form to the
readers as an education, in that Pi studies zoology in college, which leads to him talking about the
comparisons between the three–toed sloth and humans. Talking of the three–toed sloth develops into
when the physical zoo is introduced which is, later in part one after Pi's entire life story, and all that
is said about the zoo is that is was new and it was huge. When the zoo is introduced to the readers in
part one there is not a big deal made out of it, this is because the zoo simply stands for the holding
ground of the animals and the animals are the most important aspect of the zoo in this novel. The

Life of Pi Essay
Prompt: Yann Martel sprinkles the novel with italicized memories of the "real" Pi Patel and wonders
in his author's note whether fiction is "the selective transformation of reality, the twisting of it to
bring out its essence." If this is so, what is the essence of Pi? (Survival & Religion & To find the
meaning or reason for unexpected acts by god or earth) In the book Life of Pi, written by author
Yann Martel, narrated in first person by Piscine Molitor Patel. The story´s theme revolves around
the life of Pi and his family emigrating from India to Canada. On their passage they encounter a
forceful storm where Pi is deserted on a boat with only himself and a tiger named Richard Parker. In
the story the author scatters authentic memories from the original Pi Patel, which brings out essence

Religion helped Pi find inner peace and calmness, it also helped Pi recover from various
experiences. At a young age, Pi was introduced to three of the world's major religions. Pi gave equal
importance to all three religions and practiced all of them with complete devotion. Pi's gateway to
religion was opened by his aunt, when he was taken to the nearby temple for the first time: the smell
of flowers and chants of the priest, it was all meant to be.
Pi was very religious and had so much faith in God that Pi refused to die. He believed that no matter
what the circumstance is, as long as God was with him, he feared nothing. He believed he had gone
through so much and he could not choose to give up after all this effort. "I will not die. I refuse it. I
will beat the odds, as great as they are. I have survived so far, miraculously. The amazing will be

Sloth Sloths are living things because in order for them to survive they must get energy, move and

They provide a habitat for many other organisms that live in their fur. Some of the organisms that

They only mate during the months of November and December. These months are the Atlantic rain
forests' dry season. The gestation can go from six to eleven months. In this gestation period, one
sloth offspring is developed. After the gestation period, the sloth gives birth like most mammals.
The baby sloth then crawls onto the mother's stomach. The birth of a sloth takes place in a tree. The
female hangs in a tree with only her arms, which are completely stretched out. The baby sloth is
born head first and then it climbs onto its mother. During the process of birth, the sloth takes fifteen
to thirty minutes to be born. The mother then licks the baby's fur as well as her own. Then the young
climbs on the mothers stomach to reach the nipples. Next the mother bites of the umbilical cord and
grabs the young's legs. After the baby sloth is born, the mother is very protective. If a another sloth
or any other animal disturbs the young sloth, the young sloth will shriek and the mother will bite in
order to get the animal away from her young. The mother sloth cares for the young completely in the

references where Pi compares humans to animals. The topics discussed prove how animals are
similar to humans, how they benfit us, and how they affect us. First , animals can be seen as a
reflection of ourselves due to their behaviors and similarities . "....we look at an animal and see a

Brazilian Atlantic Forest
Paper Review 1
"Historical climate modelling predicts patterns of current biodiversity in the Brazilian Atlantic
forest" is a 2008 paper reported the results of a study using two different models, BIOCLIM and
MAXENT, to display the effect of different paleoclimates, a climate of specific period time in the
past, on the distribution of the tropical forest of the Atlantic region of Brazil. These predictions were
used to identify refuge forest that remained relatively stable despite climate fluctuations. The
authors, Ana Carolina Carnaval and Craig Moritz, then used genetic data to look for a correlation
between refuge areas and genetic diversity and endemism. This study was intended to describe how
the range of the Brazilian Atlantic forest changed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to their hypothesis, the predicted models of refuge forests should also predict centers of
endemism, as well as high degrees of genetic diversity with the individual taxa. However, the data
concerning species distribution was severely limited, meaning that they could only evaluate five
taxa. The authors used the distribution of mitochondrial DNA as a representation of biodiversity
within taxa. Three out of five taxa showed higher biodiversity within the modelled refuge forest: a
related complex of lizards the three–toed sloth, and the brown four–eyed opossum. However, the
other two, the slender–mouse opossum and the Atlantic rat, both showed higher genetic diversity in
the southern region, which was not included in the predicted refuge forest and would therefore not
have remained in a tropical forest. Additionally, the molecular data the sloth and lizard seems to
show trends of population expansion in regions outside of the refuge forest. Furthermore, the
authors refer to a recently discovered genus of lizard within one of their predicted refuges as
additional evidence of the high rates of the endemic species found in the Atlantic forest (Q4). The
authors present all this together as evidence of a correlation between the location of the past refuge
forests they predicted

Sloths are known for being one of the slowest mammals and for their longs claws, which can help
tell each sloth apart. The two and three toed sloths may seem the same to most people, and while
they have some things that are alike, they are more different from each other than people think from
the number of toes, to their appearance, their skeleton structure, and what they eat. The two and
three toed sloths have just a few things in common. They both have long sharp claws that can open
cans. They use these claws to defend themselves from predators, and to hold on to the tree limbs
while also reaching for their food such as leaves and buds. It can take about a month for a sloth to

The name 'Pi'
Pi Patel's full name is Piscine Molitor Patel, we are told that Piscine's name is derived from the
French word for "swimming pool" the inspiration for the name in the form of a family friend who
had fallen in love with a pool in France and told his friend–Pi's father–it should be the name of his
newborn son. This family friend, Mr. Adirubasamy, is the one who teaches Pi to swim which ties in
with the theme of survival as Pi is the only one in his family who survives thanks to his swimming
abilities which Mr. Adirubasamy bestowed to him. There is also some irony in the name Piscine, in
that as a child he is tauntingly called Pissing and when is stranded it occurs to him he may need to
drink his own urine or 'piss'.
The mathematical constant to which 'Pi' relates his name has a value of 3.14 which is the
approximate fraction 22/7 this represents the 227 days Pi survived at sea. When Pi is introducing
himself at his new school he goes up to the board in each class during attendance, writes his name

Theme Of Empathy And Animals In Life Of Pi
Empathy and Animals in Life of Pi and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
The theme of empathy manifests both in Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
and in Yan Martel's Life of Pi, lending animals a central role within the narratives that raise
metaphysical issues and questions of what is human. Despite belonging to different genres, they
touch upon similar issues, and both encompass the process their main character experiences in
which its viewpoint alters as its sense of empathy changes. In Life of Pi, Pi begins as a vegetarian
who holds strong beliefs on compassion towards animals and all creatures on earth, but is forced by
necessities to forsake this lifestyle while living 227 days at sea in a boat populated by other beings
(animals, or humans in each version). Rick Deckard, too, begins as presumably possessing empathy
towards animals, though not towards the other entities within his world – androids. Although at the
novel's outset Deckard's vocation is to exterminate androids, and he advances his quest to earn
enough money to fulfill the social expectations on which his world rests, celebrating empathy
towards animals by owning them, as the narrative unfolds his ... Show more content on

The introduction of the story starts off with Patel talking about him and how he got the name 'Pi'.
Piscine Molitor Patel is named after a big, clean swimming pool in Paris that left a big impression
on Mamaji when he was younger. Everyone in elementary school made fun of Patel because of his
name, they would call him "Pissing Patel", he decided to make a change, so when he went off to
high school, he thought of a new nickname 'Pi'. When he would introduce himself he would explain
his nickname with math equations (π)3.14 etc to give his point on how it is pronounced.
There is a foreshadowing device in Piscine's name because the pool that he was named after was "as
big as small oceans" (19) and he survives later on in the Pacific Ocean which is the largest ocean on
planet Earth. Everything that he was taught as a little boy, all of the lessons on swimming made
sense because it was all useful in the survival. Pi was the only one who knew how to swim in his
family and it seemed like faith that he only survived the big storm. Patel's nickname 'Pi' relates to

Tropical Rainforest
Tropical rainforests are forests with tall trees, warm climates, and lots of rain. Rainforests are
typically found near the earth's equator. They receive anywhere from 60 to 160 inches of
precipitation that is normally distributed evenly throughout the year. Since there is a lot of rainfall
and heat, it is very humid in those areas. Humidity , however, is not a bad thing in that area. The
plants and animals in the tropical rainforest survive due to rainfall and humidity helping plants
thrive and providing food for animals.
In fact climate is such an important part of the rainforest that "many species are currently
experiencing novel conditions because of habitat fragmentation and climate change" (Low Potential
for Climate). This means that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of this is the South American three–toed sloth. This animal has fur covered with green
algae, which is perfect camouflage in the forest canopy. Other animals use camouflage to hide to
wait for their prey. One such predator is the Boa Constrictor. The Boa Constrictor's uniquely
patterned body allows it to camouflage itself. It's an interesting technique. They have natural habits
of camouflaging themselves. One adaptation quite the opposite of camouflage is that of the brightly
colored poison arrow frogs and poison dart frogs. The bright colors of these species serve as a
warning to predators not to eat them. These frogs are so poisonous that natives wipe their arrow
heads on them to make them more lethal.
The creatures and woodland are fed and nurtured by the trees in their environment. When it rains,
the rain knocks all the insects (food for other animals) out of the air and ends up on the ground for
the animals to then be fed. The woodland and shrubbery are fed by the rain and humidity in the sky.
Tropical rainforests provide a nearly constant supply of water and a wide variety of food for the
animals. There is still a lot to be discovered about the tropical rainforests. However, the woodland
and creatures still thrive because their environment and even the world provide their lively

Pi does casually incorporate that he follows or accepts religion and science. When he is talking
about the thyroid glands of the three–toed sloth he is talking about zoology, but the three–toed sloth
adds a spiritual significance. This demonstrates that religion and science are both important to Pi. To
Pi religion and science are both important to learn and get educated on whether you believe in
religion or science. Life of Pi has many beliefs throughout the whole novel, how Pi believes in
Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. But he also accepts Mr. Kumar even after the fact that Mr.
Kumar, only believes in science. His education not only from school but from the people around
him has taught him a lot about belief.
It is not atheists who get stuck in my craw, but agnostics. Doubt is useful for a while. ... To choose
doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation. (Martle

Quolls

  • 1. Quolls Quolls are carnivorous marsupials, but their pouches are different from other marsupials. Instead of pouches like the kangaroo, they have a fold of skin on their bellies. They have long pink noses and white spots on their brown fur. They are nocturnal, but like to lay in the sun. Quolls eat a mix of seed, fruit, insects, frogs, birds and small mammals. When their babies are born, they are only the size of a grain of rice. Marsupial babies attach themselves to a nipple when they are born. Quolls have up to 30 babies at a time, but only six will survive as she only has six nipples to feed them. How tiny is one grain of rice? Rhinoceroses (rhinos) are the second largest land mammal. They are ungulates, which means they have hooves and are related to horses and zebras. A group of rhinos are herds or a crash. They have a symbiotic relationship with oxpeckers – a bird that eats ticks off the rhino and squawks loudly when danger approaches. A symbiotic relationship happens when two different animals help each other. Rhinos are herbivores – some like grass, others like the leaves from trees and bushes. ... Yaks can climb higher than any other mammal and survive in freezing weather. They have long, curved horns that are almost three feet long. Horns are used for self–defense and as a tool to move snow to reach the plants underneath. They can eat up to 10 pounds of grass or hay a day. Some yaks are domesticated. Domesticated animals are tame and pets or live on a farm. They can carry heavy loads through mountains, or pull farm equipment. Yaks produce milk, which can be made into butter, cheese, and yogurt. Their wool is crafted into rope, belts, and bags. Yak dung (poop) is dried into patties and put on a stove to burn. Yak dung does not smell and can reach high temperatures, keeping a room warm for a long time. Would you burn yak dung to stay warm during the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The anteater uses its large sharp claws to rip open an anthill or termite mound. Then he uses a very long, sticky tongue to catch them. Anteaters walk on their knuckles so their long claws don't hurt them. A baby anteater is called a pup and rides on its mom's back for about a year. When an anteater feels threatened, it will stand on its hind legs, hold its arms out wide and show its claws. • 9. 3.14 In Life Of Pi The name "Pi" in the novel "Life of Pi" was very significant in the story because it develops the character of Pi himself throughout the story to show his complexity. Pi is not only a name, but it is also used frequently in math as the number 3.14, which never changes. However, this number is only rounded to this value, there are actually too many decimals that make it hard for people to understand, so rounding it to a simple 3.14 makes it easier. The characteristics of this Pi relates to the character in a way. For example, the infinite amounts of decimals in 3.14 represents the different kinds of reality Pi has considered about the world. There are infinite point of views one can view the world as there are infinite decimals to numbers. This name develops Pi into more than a protagonist, but a constituting figure with multiple ... Owning a zoo as a family business is a perfect way for Pi to get to know the animals as a child in a spiritual way and establish his connection to the zoo animals like Richard Parker. In other words, it gives a more natural feel to the story and it's religious themes. Although, if Pi's family was in a different business like construction, then the story would be in a much more different state. Pi's family would be at more of a risk when it came to safety on the job. Also Pi would have never got to know animals in a spiritual way as a child and to obtain that spiritual connection, which would make it harder for his religious beliefs. The family zoo business also contributes to the theme of ritual or routine. Throughout the story, animals are known to have the same rituals or patterns everyday. If the pattern is changed then something is different. Humans are the same. They follow a routine everyday as animals do, thus establishing a connection between humans and ... • 13. Two Toed Sloth Pauli Summary "SLOTH": DEADLY SIN OR NATURAL SELECTION? According to the Bible, Sloth is considered to be one of the seven deadly sins. In that perspective has the "lazy" mammal, Hoffmann's two–toed sloth, been punished by nature and natural selection? The article "Mating system of Hoffmann's two–toed sloth" by M. Z. Peery and J. N. Pauli, reveals some interesting information on this low–mobility mammal, its mating systems and preferences. Nevertheless, the results are not surprising. The research has been conducted in 2010–2011 in Costa Rica, in three habitat types (cacao farm, tropical forest, and cattle pasture). The researchers captured and marked 157 individual sloths either with radiocollars or with temporary paint on their backs. Sloths captured were of both sexes and various age categories (juveniles, subadults and adults). They then quantified home range of all categories of males and females. Not surprisingly, the adult male home ranges included the geometric centre of each adult female. Using relatedness as the dependent variable, and distance as an independent variable, they wanted to examine whether species–specific characters and environmental factors shape mating systems. ... The pygmy sloth is "listed as Critically Endangered as this species has a very restricted range, being found on only one very small island less than 5 km² in size, and there is likely a continuing decline in the quality of habitat and area of occupancy due to habitat degradation" (Voirin, Smith, Chiarello, ... They descend from the tree to the ground, hug the base of the tree, shake their hips side to side, and relief themselves. They use loud vocalizations as mating calls due to their bad eyesight. After finding a mate, baby sloths develop in their mothers for six to twelve months. Baby sloths cling to their mother's underside and remain with them for a year before living on their own. The average life expectancy of sloths ranges from thirty to forty years. • 33. Essay about Great Expectations, Life of Pi and the Great... English Literature Summer Task The Great Gatsby, Life of Pi and Great Expectations: The Opening Chapters The opening chapters of each of these three books are both similar and different in many ways, and succeed to keep the reader interested enough to carry on their journey with Pip, Nick or Pi. The way characterisation is put forward in these three novels is rather similar, in the fact that all three are written in the first person, giving the impression that the character in question is telling their story directly to you, the reader. Similarly, all three characters open with a description of themselves and their lives; Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby stating facts of his childhood and education before going on to talk about his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All of these analyses differ greatly in detail and style. Across the three novels, a variation of language techniques is used to establish the correct mood within the first chapter. The Great Gatsby is slow going to begin with, and the reader wonders where the chapter will lead. Gatsby's name is mentioned several times within the first few pages, but nothing more is said of him until his name comes up in conversation with that of Miss Baker. This then sets a curious and intrigued mood, and makes the reader wonder who and what Gatsby has to do with Nick, and how the story will develop. There are many sub–plots, such as Tom's "woman in London", that also create curiosity from the reader. At the very end of the chapter, the appearance and then sudden disappearance of Gatsby ends the chapter on a cliff–hanger, and therefore creates suspense and suspicion. Within Life of Pi, rhetorical questions are used to involve the reader and make them wonder what is coming next. I believe the mood within this first chapter is most awkward and strange, and feels almost as though the reader is intruding on a very personal story, or thought process. The epigraph immediately creates a depressed and down–tone mood to the story; however it does increase the desire to know what DID happen to Pi to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Deforestation In The Amazon Rainforest Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest not only harms the forest, but it also harms the animals in the forest, the humans outside the forest, and Arctic Animals far North. Deforestation effects all life on Earth in an extremely negative way. Within the forest, deforestation destroys the homes of the forest's inhabitants. Animals with habitat sensitivity such as the Three–Toed Sloth will be forced to evacuate their homes and will perish from excessive amounts of stress. Animals that depend on the large trees such as Scarlet Macaws will have their homes (and nests) destroyed. • 41. Three Toed Sloth Research Paper A sloth's life seems pretty sweet, right? You get to hang out in trees all day, munching on food, sleeping all the time, and moving real slow to blend in with your surroundings. For a sloth, Sunday is every day. Laziness is just the sloth way. Sloths are tropical mammals that live in Central and South America. They use their long claws to hang onto branches while they feast on the leaves that other animals can't reach. Unfortunately for the sloth, their long claws that makes walking on the ground difficult, so they spend most of their time in the tall trees. There are two categories of sloths. The two–toed sloth is slightly bigger than the three–toed sloth, though they share many of the same features. They are about the size of a medium–sized dog at around 23 to 27 inches and 17.5 to 18.75. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are split into two groups: the two–toed sloths and the three–toed sloths. There are two species of two–toed sloths and there are four species of three–toed sloths. There used to be more species of sloths, but they've become extinct either through natural causes or mankind destroying their environment. Two–toed sloths have two toes, where as three–toed sloths have three toes. A few of these remaining species are extremely close to extinction and if we don't do something soon we may very well lose them good. They're becoming extinct from the destruction of their natural habitat. You already know how slow sloths are, they need time to thrive. The rate at which their environment is being destroyed is too fast for the sloths to keep up! They are trying their best, bless them. But the only way we can save them is by preserving the rainforests. Their height when they stand is 2–2.5 ft and their weight is 8–17 lbs! Their life span is up to 10 years old. • 45. Animals : Ended And Endangered Animals In Mangrove Forests We are surrounded by endangered species every day. Majestic tigers grace posters on bedroom walls, stuffed toy pandas stare blankly from shopping mall shelves; with the click of a button, we can watch the elaborate courtship rituals of whooping cranes and the strategic hunting habits of the Amur leopard on the Discovery Channel (Bove). No matter where we look, there are signs of endangered and extinct animals that are going extinct because of us. Habitat loss is the greatest threat to the variety of life on our planet and is overall the reason that there are less than 100 three– toed sloths left on Earth. Confined to a single island, three–toed sloths' homes have been destroyed by humans due to deforestation in mangrove forests, making three–toed sloths globally and critically endangered. Humans see the mangrove forests that the sloths once lived on as a threat, killing off a great variety of species. Humans are ravaging mangrove forests when they are not only beneficial to our environment but are the homes of many critically endangered animals, including the sloth. Even though mangrove forests are seen a waste of space, mangrove forests should be reserved for the wildlife because a large variety of species are going extinct due to human folly, including the three– toed sloth. This biome has been reduced to 7% of its original extent and the remaining forests are highly fragmented (Washington).More than 35% of the world's mangroves are already gone. Three Toed Sloths Planet Earth is home to over 13,000 known species of mammals and birds, thousands of reptile, amphibian, and fish species, some 250,000 flowering plant species, and millions of insect and other invertebrate species (Linzey, 2013, p. 102). Together these animals and plants form part of the great natural wealth of the world with which society is entrusted to maintain, both for present generations and those generations yet to come. Nevertheless, individuals choose to undervalue the worth of certain species in their natural environment; one group in particular is the two extant families of sloths. By failing to appreciate all the sloth has to offer, ignorance blossoms. Thus, rather than losing the sloth in a numerical sense such as endangerment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As many individuals have begun to piece this all together, they are discovering that there is more to the sloths than what meets the eye. With regard to internal features, compared to other mammals, organs including the stomach, spleen, and liver are located in different areas, due to the upside– down lifestyle (San Diego Zoo Global, 2009). The location of some organs may differ, but sloths actually have a stomach that is chambered like a cow's. However, unlike cows and other ruminants, the sloth's stomach is the center of its digestive process and is enormous in relation to the rest of its body. Surprisingly, the sloth's stomach makes up 20 to 30 percent of its total body weight (Holdrege, 2009). Luckily, the sloth's four–chambered stomach is filled with bacteria, which helps ferment the plant matter consumed. Even so, digestion takes a long time. In fact, the Sloth Sanctuary, Costa Rica's original sloth rescue center, asserts that it is believed that sloths have the slowest digestive rate of any mammal (Avey–Arroyo & Cliffe, n.d.). The true rate of food passage from ingestion to excretion is still under debate. In order to get a better understanding of the sloth's digestion, R. Cliffe, the Sloth Sanctuary's biologist, used a digestive marker called Carmine Red, derived from the female Cochineal insect, to calculate how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The fate of the pygmy sloth depends largely on whether or not additional steps are taken to protect Escudo de Veraguas. The island's current protection status leaves open the possibility of future development and is vague as to who may develop it. Declaring the island a wildlife refuge or national park would protect not only the pygmy sloths, but also the other unique species found on the island. A similar conservation legislation has been successfully enacted in the past by the government of Panama to protect vulnerable island ecosystems. For example, Isla Iguana has been given the status of "wildlife refuge," which protects the island's flora and fauna while also allowing tourism and local use under the supervision of park rangers (Voirin, 2015). Sloths Essay WIKIPEDIAARTICLE ABOUT SLOTHS Sloths (/ˈsloʊθ/ sloh–th, /ˈslɒθ/ slo–th)[2] are medium–sized mammals belonging to the families Megalonychidae (two–toed sloth) and Bradypodidae (three–toed sloth), classified into six species. They are part of the order Pilosa and are therefore related to anteaters, which sport a similar set of specialized claws. Extant sloths are arboreal (tree–dwelling) residents of the jungles of Central and South America, and are known for being slow–moving, and hence named "sloths". Extinct sloth species include many ground sloths, some of which attained the size of elephants. In most mammals, hairs grow toward the extremities, but because sloths spend so much time with their legs above their bodies, their hairs grow away from the extremities to provide protection from the elements while the sloth hangs upside down. In most conditions, the fur hosts two species of symbiotic cyanobacteria, which provide camouflage.[7][8] Because of the cyanobacteria, sloth fur is a small ecosystem of its own, hosting many species of non–parasitic insects. Sloths have short, flat heads, big eyes; short snouts, long legs, and tiny ears. Some species have stubby tails (6–7 cm long). Altogether, sloths' bodies usually are between 50 and 60 cm long. Sloths' claws serve as their only natural defense. A cornered sloth may swipe at its attackers in an effort to scare them away or wound them. Despite sloths' apparent defenselessness, predators do not pose special problems: sloths blend in with the trees and, moving only slowly, do not attract attention. Only during their infrequent visits to ground level do they become vulnerable. The main predators of sloths are the jaguar, the harpy eagle, and humans. The majority of recorded sloth deaths in Costa Rica are due to contact with electrical lines and poachers. Their claws also provide a further unexpected deterrent to human hunters; when hanging upside–down in a tree, they are held in place by the claws themselves and often do not fall down even if shot from below. This is because the two–toed sloths have a higher metabolism, are better at thermoregulation and digestion and move more quickly than three–toed sloths (Chan, 1999). The Amazon Rain Forest stretches from the Andes Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. The rain forest goes into eight countries including Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Colombia. (World Book) The Amazon has very unique climate, biodiversity, and limiting factors. The Amazon has a tropical climate. Since the Amazon Rain Forest is near the equator it is always likely to be hot and humid. The average temperature of the Amazon Rain Forest is 80 degrees Fahrenheit. (World Book) Yet, the temperature feels much hotter due to the constant humidity in the Amazon. The reason it is so humid in the Amazon is the rainfall the Amazon receives. In the Amazon it rains around 60 to 175 inches a year. In addition, thunderstorms happen in the Amazon around 200 days a year. In the areas nearest to equator there is constant rainfall year round. (Facts on File) The Amazon is divided into 4 parts: the emergent layer, the canopy, the understory, and the forest floor. The emergent layer is the part on top of the trees. This area receives lots of sunlight, low humidity, and lots of wind. The canopy area is the part of the tallest trees. This part still receives a lot of sunlight. At a young age, Pi was introduced to three of the world's major religions. Pi gave equal importance to all three religions and practiced all of them with complete devotion. Pi's gateway to religion was opened by his aunt, when he was taken to the nearby temple for the first time: the smell of flowers and chants of the priest, it was all meant to be. Pi was very religious and had so much faith in God that Pi refused to die. He believed that no matter what the circumstance is, as long as God was with him, he feared nothing. He believed he had gone through so much and he could not choose to give up after all this effort. "I will not die. I refuse it. I will beat the odds, as great as they are. I have survived so far, miraculously. The amazing will be seen every day. I will put in all the hard work necessary. Yes, so long as God is with me, I will not die. Amen." Everyone knows sloths are slow, but did you know sloths move so slow algae can grow on their fur? Sloths are slow moving mammals. They are native to Central and South America. They live in the trees of the rainforests. They provide a habitat for many other organisms that live in their fur. Some of the organisms that live in the sloth's fur include moths, beetles, fungi and algae. Their dirty fur creates an ecosystem for other life. They are not hunters but rather docile creatures. These months are the Atlantic rain forests' dry season. The gestation can go from six to eleven months. In this gestation period, one sloth offspring is developed. After the gestation period, the sloth gives birth like most mammals. The baby sloth then crawls onto the mother's stomach. The birth of a sloth takes place in a tree. The female hangs in a tree with only her arms, which are completely stretched out. The baby sloth is born head first and then it climbs onto its mother. During the process of birth, the sloth takes fifteen to thirty minutes to be born. The mother then licks the baby's fur as well as her own. Then the young climbs on the mothers stomach to reach the nipples. Next the mother bites of the umbilical cord and grabs the young's legs. After the baby sloth is born, the mother is very protective. If a another sloth or any other animal disturbs the young sloth, the young sloth will shriek and the mother will bite in order to get the animal away from her young. The mother sloth cares for the young completely in the tree while it lives on her body. The young feeds and defecates on the mother sloth. As a person with pets, you may realize animals can be very helpful in your life, and can gain some of your charateristics from training. In the book Life of Pi we can see many references where Pi compares humans to animals. The topics discussed prove how animals are similar to humans, how they benfit us, and how they affect us. First , animals can be seen as a reflection of ourselves due to their behaviors and similarities . "....we look at an animal and see a mirror." (Martel, 39). Brazilian Atlantic Forest Paper Review 1 "Historical climate modelling predicts patterns of current biodiversity in the Brazilian Atlantic forest" is a 2008 paper reported the results of a study using two different models, BIOCLIM and MAXENT, to display the effect of different paleoclimates, a climate of specific period time in the past, on the distribution of the tropical forest of the Atlantic region of Brazil. These predictions were used to identify refuge forest that remained relatively stable despite climate fluctuations. The authors, Ana Carolina Carnaval and Craig Moritz, then used genetic data to look for a correlation between refuge areas and genetic diversity and endemism. This study was intended to describe how the range of the Brazilian Atlantic forest changed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to their hypothesis, the predicted models of refuge forests should also predict centers of endemism, as well as high degrees of genetic diversity with the individual taxa. However, the data concerning species distribution was severely limited, meaning that they could only evaluate five taxa. The authors used the distribution of mitochondrial DNA as a representation of biodiversity within taxa. Three out of five taxa showed higher biodiversity within the modelled refuge forest: a related complex of lizards the three–toed sloth, and the brown four–eyed opossum. However, the other two, the slender–mouse opossum and the Atlantic rat, both showed higher genetic diversity in the southern region, which was not included in the predicted refuge forest and would therefore not have remained in a tropical forest. Additionally, the molecular data the sloth and lizard seems to show trends of population expansion in regions outside of the refuge forest. Furthermore, the authors refer to a recently discovered genus of lizard within one of their predicted refuges as additional evidence of the high rates of the endemic species found in the Atlantic forest (Q4). The authors present all this together as evidence of a correlation between the location of the past refuge forests they predicted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The two and three toed sloths may seem the same to most people, and while they have some things that are alike, they are more different from each other than people think from the number of toes, to their appearance, their skeleton structure, and what they eat. The two and three toed sloths have just a few things in common. They both have long sharp claws that can open cans. They use these claws to defend themselves from predators, and to hold on to the tree limbs while also reaching for their food such as leaves and buds. It can take about a month for a sloth to digest one leaf. The toe toed species may also eat twigs, fruits and small prey. They get their water mainly from the leaves they eat. This family friend, Mr. Adirubasamy, is the one who teaches Pi to swim which ties in with the theme of survival as Pi is the only one in his family who survives thanks to his swimming abilities which Mr. Adirubasamy bestowed to him. There is also some irony in the name Piscine, in that as a child he is tauntingly called Pissing and when is stranded it occurs to him he may need to drink his own urine or 'piss'. The mathematical constant to which 'Pi' relates his name has a value of 3.14 which is the approximate fraction 22/7 this represents the 227 days Pi survived at sea. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and in Yan Martel's Life of Pi, lending animals a central role within the narratives that raise metaphysical issues and questions of what is human. Despite belonging to different genres, they touch upon similar issues, and both encompass the process their main character experiences in which its viewpoint alters as its sense of empathy changes. In Life of Pi, Pi begins as a vegetarian who holds strong beliefs on compassion towards animals and all creatures on earth, but is forced by necessities to forsake this lifestyle while living 227 days at sea in a boat populated by other beings (animals, or humans in each version). Rick Deckard, too, begins as presumably possessing empathy towards animals, though not towards the other entities within his world – androids. Although at the novel's outset Deckard's vocation is to exterminate androids, and he advances his quest to earn enough money to fulfill the social expectations on which his world rests, celebrating empathy towards animals by owning them, as the narrative unfolds his ... Piscine Molitor Patel is named after a big, clean swimming pool in Paris that left a big impression on Mamaji when he was younger. Everyone in elementary school made fun of Patel because of his name, they would call him "Pissing Patel", he decided to make a change, so when he went off to high school, he thought of a new nickname 'Pi'. When he would introduce himself he would explain his nickname with math equations (π)3.14 etc to give his point on how it is pronounced. There is a foreshadowing device in Piscine's name because the pool that he was named after was "as big as small oceans" (19) and he survives later on in the Pacific Ocean which is the largest ocean on planet Earth. Everything that he was taught as a little boy, all of the lessons on swimming made sense because it was all useful in the survival. They receive anywhere from 60 to 160 inches of precipitation that is normally distributed evenly throughout the year. Since there is a lot of rainfall and heat, it is very humid in those areas. Humidity , however, is not a bad thing in that area. The plants and animals in the tropical rainforest survive due to rainfall and humidity helping plants thrive and providing food for animals. In fact climate is such an important part of the rainforest that "many species are currently experiencing novel conditions because of habitat fragmentation and climate change" (Low Potential for Climate). This means that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of this is the South American three–toed sloth. This animal has fur covered with green algae, which is perfect camouflage in the forest canopy. Other animals use camouflage to hide to wait for their prey. One such predator is the Boa Constrictor. The Boa Constrictor's uniquely patterned body allows it to camouflage itself. It's an interesting technique. They have natural habits of camouflaging themselves. One adaptation quite the opposite of camouflage is that of the brightly colored poison arrow frogs and poison dart frogs. The bright colors of these species serve as a warning to predators not to eat them. These frogs are so poisonous that natives wipe their arrow heads on them to make them more lethal. The creatures and woodland are fed and nurtured by the trees in their environment. When it rains, the rain knocks all the insects (food for other animals) out of the air and ends up on the ground for the animals to then be fed. The woodland and shrubbery are fed by the rain and humidity in the sky. Tropical rainforests provide a nearly constant supply of water and a wide variety of food for the animals. A controversy that is outdated back to the 14th century, an era when society started questioning, their religions and started to grasp reality. The two major themes in Life of Pi by, Yann Martle are Science and Religion. In Life of Pi, the author uses Pi (Piscine Molitor Patel) the Protagonist to express that society needs both science and religion equally. Throughout Pi's life before being trapped at sea, Pi displays education, beliefs, and survival. In the book, most of the animals mentioned are used as metaphors even the earliest ones starting from the three–toed sloth.
