This document discusses the global transition to renewable energy and distributed energy resources (DER), highlighting examples from California, New York, Korea, Australia, and Onslow, Western Australia. It argues that microgrids and DER will be central to reinventing electricity systems and delivering benefits for customers. Future electricity grids may consist of a "federation" of microgrids orchestrating millions of small generation sources, requiring new control architectures. Business models will need to adapt to this competitive landscape, requiring organizations to be ambidextrous, innovative, and able to deliver services on a fee basis.

In this webinar, Mark Jacobson introduces his new book that lays out the science, technology, economics, policy, and social aspects of a transition to 100% clean, renewable energy in order to address climate change, air pollution, and energy insecurity. Considering the EU Green Deal, the US Green New Deal and China’s climate neutrality commitment, this book is a very timely and welcome addition to the transition movement. It is one-of-a-kind:
* It’s both a textbook for students and a briefing for a broader audience of professionals and interested lay persons active in the transition movement
* It provides a focus on a selection of clean, renewable technologies that have been proven to work and can be rapidly deployed
* It includes a concrete plan howto get to 100%, clean, renewable energy and storage for everything.
* It develops energy plans for states and countries while keeping the grid stable.
* It describes practical solutions and the policies needed for those solutions.
'Mark Jacobson’s new book, 100% Clean, Renewable Energy and Storage for Everything, provides the most authoritative look yet at the future of energy beyond fossil fuels. The text is clearly written, authoritative, and thoroughly referenced. This will make a great text book for courses on energy and climate change, but is also a must read for all of us interested in the transition to a renewable future.' - Robert W. Howarth, Cornell University, New York

Energy Transition: Multi-$trillion Ponzi scheme or the biggest tech market ever?Simon Thompson
Background: The conundrum of the oil price
About $100 billion a year is spent by the 5 biggest global oil companies “finding” more oil. Today $300 billion a year is spent on installing renewables like solar and windpower – almost three times what is spent by those oil companies.
But there is no money spent on “finding” new sun, as we already know where the sun is at its brightest. There is also no money spent finding out where it is windiest because we already know.
Oil company valuation
Value = oil price today X assets in the ground minus cost of getting it out
New formula
Value = oil price today (and in the future) X assets in ground minus cost of getting it out of the ground
If oil falls to $30
Value = 20% of oil worth getting out of the ground –value falls by 80%. With debt = worthless
Stop digging for new oil.
If oil falls to $20
Almost zero oil is worth getting out of the ground
So Oil industry = zero less debt - negative
Oil goes to $20 in 2043...

Biden – With a new administration taking office and a new decade upon us, it’s a perfect opportunity to recommit holding the automobile industry accountable under the Clean Air Act. While 50 years of regulation have brought with it substantial benefits, four years of automotive rollbacks have taken their toll, with stagnating fuel economy and numerous pollution scandals plaguing the industry.

If we look at the total system change going on in energy out of context, the picture could be rosy. But in climate-change context, the transition is not going fast enough. And it is held back by the oil and gas industries' diehard advocacy of gas, in a world where the IEA tells us the carbon budget is used up, and no more fossil fuel infrastructure of any kind can be built. This presentation considers how and when Big Oil's rearguard action will stop, and they themselves begin genuinely to transition.
This presentation was delivered at an evening meeting of the Energy Institute's Young Professionals Network in London on 31st January.

The tipping point for electrified vehicles is in sight, and a combination of hybrid and fully electric powertrains is expected to cut the global market share of pure internal combustion engines (ICEs) by about 50% by 2030.
Serge has a simple and clear goal: help build an attractive, fossil-free future. In 2017 he launched FutureproofedCities — a cloud-based app to helping municipalities to drive climate plans and actions. Serge shows how innovative technology helps addressing climate change impact and how climate change is a driver for innovation.
Electric vehicles and electric utilities – a clear opportunity with many shapesCarlo Stella
While several stakeholders are supportive of the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, we have looked specifically at electric utilities to understand the opportunities that such a change in the transportation landscape can generate, and define the key questions to be addressed in order to embrace them. We have identified four business models – by no means evolutionary – that can be looked at independently, and eventually combined to fit the company’s strategy and the specific market conditions (e.g., regulation, competition, ecosystem, customer readiness). We strongly believe electric utilities are ideally positioned to leverage the opportunities offered by the adoption of electric vehicles on a mass-market scale, but they need to act fast, as many other players are addressing the same opportunity

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

29. Source: Bloomberg New Energy Finance Note: we calculate the number of barrels displaced by multiplying the cumulative number of EVs on the road in a given year by
the average vehicle miles travelled by the EV, divided by the average miles per gallon of an internal combustion engine vehicle on the road, divided by 365, divided by 42,
which is the number of gallons in one barrel. Our figures likely understate actual crude oil displacement given that one barrel of crude oil produces around 19.5 gallons of
gasoline

• DSP will be used to spawn crea@on of microgrids
• Focus on crea@on of jobs/industry
• Focused on revolu-on which they see driven by

• Focus on crea-on of 500K jobs by 2030
35. What is a microgrid and why is it smart?
• Clearly defined boundaries
• Single controllable entity
• Interconnected loads
• Orchestrates Distributed
Energy Resources (DERs)
• Integrated customers
• Scalable
35
38. Because Microgrids and Distributed
Energy are the DNA of future electricity
And will be key to delivering benefits for customers, the
community and the environment in the new energy economy
42. The solutions are the same – The Onslow Story
• The Onslow story
• Home of Australia’s largest distributed energy resource (DER) microgrid.
• 50% of the town’s electricity needs to be serviced from renewable energy sources.
• Includes a mix of distributed energy renewables, conventional gas powered generation and energy
storage.
• Will reduce cost to supply Onslow
• Will provide more flexibility for customers
43. • Electricity systems supplied by millions of micro-
generation sources (not a handful large centralised
generators) need new control architectures
• Microgrids can provide this architecture at a local level and
enable thousands of DERs to operate in harmony and
constantly balance supply and demand
• Large traditional grids may be re-architected over time for
optimal efficiency as a federation of microgrids; usually
functioning together but sometime independently (to
minimise widespread outages).
Future electricity grids may be a ‘federation’ of
microgrids
