The California wood strawberry is a native, herbaceous perennial groundcover plant found throughout California. It spreads vigorously via stolons and rhizomes, with leaves that are medium green and lobed like typical strawberries. It produces small white flowers in spring and summer followed by tasty red berries. As one of the best native groundcovers, it is suitable for shady areas under trees and pairs well with shade-loving perennials. It requires only occasional watering and fertilizing, spreads easily but can also be contained, and reproduces readily from seed or divisions.
