Formative Presentation for Photography, Styling and Creative Direction.

1. FORMATIVE

2. GROUP
CONCEPT
Originally, we had a group discussion and
discussed several different of ideas
surrounding the theme of musicals. We’d
thought about the concept of going to a
variety of different shows and
photographing them, but then we had to
consider the time we had, the financial side
of things as well as the reality of being able
to use professional cameras at some strict
West End theatres. Stemming from this idea,
we knew we still wanted to incorporate the
idea of theatrical fashion in our images. We
then looked at cosplaying but again we had
to factor in costs for costumes, props, etc.
Eventually, we looked at Disney-bounding
which is where people dress up as a Disney-
owned character without wearing a costume.
This includes colour-blocking outfits to
match characters and wearing similar
patterns and accessories. We thought a
similar idea for theatre, would be the best
way for us approach the inclusion of
theatrical fashion without having to
financially rely on new props or clothing.

3. OUR CONCEPT
CONTINUED…
To make it specific to our
concept, we thought about how
we could take Disney-bounding
and combine the idea with
theatre. For example, taking the
main colours used in each show
and including these same colours
in everyday casual clothing. To
execute this, we’re each picking a
theatrical production or two to
focus on creating outfit ideas
using the primary colours or
patterns from that show. Some
example we’re currently looking
at including are productions such
as: Heathers, Six, Bonnie & Clyde,
&Juliet, etc, to experiment with
which different colours and styles
are used that we could then

4. GROUP INFLUENCES/IDEAS
We
concluded
as a group
that we
wanted to
compose an
idea that
was unique
and
distinctive
We toyed with
several different
initial ideas
stemming from
the relation of
fashion we needed
to include. This
spanned from
historical themes
to even possibly
architectural
inspiration.
This is
before
landing on
our initial
general idea
of ’theatrical
fashion’.

5. PLANNING
We used several different
formats on how to plan and
create our ideas. This included
mind mapping, looking through
several different ways of
executing our plans including a
feasibility study etc.

6. WHERE WE CURRENTLY
ARE…
We’ve completed the planning stage of
our project that involves various
conventional planning techniques, such
as creating our mood board, colour
scheme and original concept.
What we are currently in the process of
currently is acquiring the props and
outfits for our photoshoot.
We’re currently in the process of
acquiring props and clothing for our
final shoots and executed product.

7. OUR NEXT STEPS…
We’ve booked camera equipment, lighting and backdrop equipment via the
university kit store to be used in early June, this give us enough time to gather
materials and make any last minute changes if necessary.
In the meantime, to know if there are any slight changes we would like to make
we’ll use our mobile phones to shoot photographs in specific lighting using a
selection of our outfits to see if they look close to what we’re aiming to create.
After the photoshoot we plan on spending time editing the best photos using
Adobe programs Photoshop and Lightroom to enhance specific parts of the
image that we want to be the focal point.
