Typical elements that normally occur on a women’s magazine would be
• Bright colours such as pink and purples
• Looks interesting, and informative with the subheadings.
• Pull quotes are interesting and help bring in readers
• Eye catching pictures and text to appeal to the audience.
• Variety of different fonts making it not only visually attractive and interesting but also eye catching.
• mode of address, this can be spit into two categories, Indirect and Direct. Direct is when the person on the cover looks straight at the
camera appearing to be looking out of the magazine, inviting the readers in. However Indirect is when the person on the cover looks
away from the camera, this could be used to suggest they have something to hide and add mystery making the readers what to find
out what they’re hiding.
• Masthead, the masthead is the title block for the magazine, usually this is the most eye catching convention on a page and can be
easily notified.
• Anchorage text tells us the main story and lures the readers in.
• Plug, this is normally located at the bottom of the page and used to catch the readers attention
• Subheadings, these are used to interest the audience and make the magazine look more interesting
• A lure is used as a marketing device that pulls the reader into the article, similar to a subheading it is used to make the magazine look
interesting
• Almost all magazines will use the word “Exclusive” this is because it makes the reader think that this information that is inside the
magazine is only available in this magazine and they won’t find it anywhere else.
• A Kicker is a story designed to stand out from the rest of the page by using different fonts, layout or colour.
• Celebrities being a main feature on the cover and stories throughout to bring in more readers as people prefer reading about
celebrities.
3. Masthead
What makes a good masthead is a lot of colour and bold font, they’re
easily recognisable and easy to read.They're usually large and placed at
the top of the magazine.They’re bold and colourful to attract the
audience.The definition for a masthead this is “the title of a newspaper
or magazine at the head of the first or editorial page.”
Pull Quote/subheading
Pull quotes are most common on a magazine as
they’re used to attract the audience. Magazine
editors try and make their pull quotes interesting to
pull in readers.The definition of a subheading is “a
heading given to a subsection of a piece of writing.
For example the one of Harry Styles’ quote “I
wouldn’t date someone older than my mum” this
would attract readers not only because it’s about
Harry Style’s but because it’s appealing because it’s
interesting.
