Forests are areas with a high density of trees that cover about 30% of the land surface. They are natural formations that serve as habitat for many animal and plant species. Forests can be either natural or planted for specific goals like timber production. Deforestation has been occurring for prehistoric times but increased during the Industrial Revolution and even more in the 20th century in tropical forests. Deforestation is mainly caused by human activity.
