This document discusses quality in foresight and forecasting for emerging markets. It begins by providing examples of past forecast failures and outlines several "levels" of future uncertainty. It then discusses various "limits" or challenges with different forecasting approaches, such as relying only on sector experts, overextrapolating trends, and the limitations of quantitative forecasting. It advocates using scenarios to explore multiple plausible futures rather than single point predictions. The document concludes by outlining implications for views of emerging markets like South Africa in 2030, emphasizing the need to plan for unpredictable change, practice high-quality foresight, respect consumer adoption patterns, and understand when we can influence versus must adapt to the future.
The document discusses several key ICT trends worldwide:
1. Open innovation and crowdsourcing, where companies collaborate with outside partners and the public to generate ideas. Examples given include a juice company collaborating on new flavors and an open smartphone platform.
2. Reality sensing, which analyzes existing data like mobile phone and sensor data to measure events in real-time. Examples include traffic monitoring and flu tracking.
3. Empowering energy efficiency, with consumers and businesses seeking more sustainable energy solutions. Examples include devices that generate power from human motion and smart homes that monitor energy usage.
4. Human interface trends like emotions in robots, brain-wave controlled devices, and new semantic search engines
Industry foresight is an understanding of emerging trends, drivers, opportunities, and disruptions within a market or industry. Insight to foresight - Marketing Research SectorAyesha Saeed Haq
The document discusses how the marketing research sector must transform to remain competitive in the modern information age. Historically, marketing research involved tapping into scarce information to derive insights. However, there is now an overabundance of available information from social media that provides real-time consumer analysis. The key transformation for the industry is to shift from insight discovery to suggesting impactful ideas and facilitating decisions based on analyzing insights. This will allow marketing research firms to own the entire data-to-decision value chain and position themselves as consultants who process multiple data streams for organization-wide decisions. The industry must build its value proposition on conventional strengths but with new techniques in order to compete against upcoming social media monitoring and management consulting.

Todd Mundt hosted a nationally syndicated radio program and is now the Director of New Media Strategies at Louisville Public Media. He discusses how creativity requires both spontaneous thinking and preparation. While radio personalities aim to seem spontaneous, their personas are carefully crafted through practice. Mundt learned the importance of solitary practice and preparation in developing his on-air skills. He acknowledges tensions between linear and non-linear thinking styles, and between taking leaps of ideas and structuring processes for others to follow up. Mundt is passionate about the role of public media and sees his work as a framework for examining ideas and fulfilling his calling.

People have been creating together for thousands of years. Some of those people have written about their experience, and so we have the possibility of building on their wisdom. In this talk, Marc Rettig describes the age-old story of people who seek to have a creative voice through their work, and to connect their personal excitement and possibilities to the needs of the world. As this story repeats itself for many in the world of “user experience,” another familiar dynamic comes to light: the challenge of working in settings that express desire for creativity, but reward compliance. And therein lies a defining question of our time and our careers: where does profound creativity come from?

It discusses understanding consumer context and how digital and social media can fit within people's worlds. The document outlines three roles for digital media as actor, tool, and persuasion. It provides examples of how digital has been used successfully as media, tool, and actor for the US Army, 2011 New Zealand elections, Facebook advocacy, and mental health websites. It encourages reimagining opportunities to persuade and listening, doing, and saying.
This document summarizes a book that argues developing countries are experiencing an explosion of creativity that is changing the world. The author interviewed a professor in India who said developing countries want jobs in research, analysis, design and development - not just assembly line work. This realization prompted the author's research into how developing countries gaining access to tools and knowledge are actively participating in innovation. The author believes the Western world is limiting its potential by labeling itself as "developed" and assuming development has stopped, when the world continues changing. Developing countries still see themselves as developing and improving, which allows for more flexibility and momentum compared to developed countries that see their work as finished.

Intentional Environments: Designing a Culture of Co-creationKate Rutter
Design doesn’t happen inside a vacuum. It happens inside teams, inside the context of relationships, inside physical spaces, inside organizations with very particular cultures. Ignore that intricate ecosystem, and you might as well give your project a death sentence.
In this talk, Teresa and Kate draw from their experience bringing this holistic outlook to the design process. Pulling from methods used in filmmaking, fine art, design research, facilitation, improv, and UX design, they craft “intentional environments” for their teams and clients. These literal and figurative environments cultivate work that is actionable, co-created, co-owned, and much more likely to succeed in the world.
They discuss the benefits of intentional environments and walk you through how to design them and methods for keeping them activated throughout the design process. You’ll walk away understanding how to cultivate intentionality, co-create without compromising output, and inspire teams and clients along the way. But more importantly, you’ll have a powerful new framework that will enrich your entire design process.
This document provides guidance on effective scientific writing. It discusses why scientists should write, including to communicate their work, convey knowledge, and facilitate understanding. The document outlines aspects to consider when writing such as the writing process, elements of high-quality writing, and the style of writing. It emphasizes the importance of clarity, precision, structure, coherence, and using an active voice to objectively present information for the reader.
The document provides guidance on developing the ability to interpret texts by looking at an author's language choices and their effect on the reader. It discusses identifying different language techniques in texts, exploring how writers use techniques in their writing, and how readers are affected. Key language techniques covered are identifying an author's bias or feelings about a subject, and rhetorical devices writers use to make their point more persuasive, such as rhetorical questions, lists, contrasts, repetition and emotive language.
On 19 June 2012 at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Landor CEO Mary Zalla gave two workshops to packed crowds on how to creatively sell creative work.
We all work hard to produce creative and, ideally, effective solutions. But we often don’t pay as much attention to how we share those solutions.
Getting the best and the most creative work produced is not just about selling. It is about inspiring your audience to see potential.
The first thing we need to do is to truly understand our audiences, empathize with them and their situation. We then need to have a few things at our disposal:
• Appreciation for the power of story versus plain facts
• Understanding of the confirmation bias
• Courage versus daring
• Awareness of the Asch Effect
• Fortitude and determination
Check out the deck from Mary’s Cannes presentation and read her article on a similar topic, “ Eight principles of creativity.”

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
