9. FORENSIC ENGINEERING
• Is the process of investigating distress or failure of a structure, that includes (but is
not limited to) the evaluation of problems caused by distresses that are a direct
result of factors that include moisture intrusion, inadequate material thicknesses or
poor material preparation/performance. Forensic investigation strives to diagnose
causes of the damage, distress or failure and to develop a plan for repairs.
9
12. PAST METHODS
• The principal methods used in early forensic engineering included:
• The careful analysis of the service record of the component.
• The review of the loads carried.
• Record of temperatures suffered.
• Analysis of the microstructure of the material used.
• Assessment of witness evidence.
This was usually carried out by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction
and chemical analysis.
12
13. PRESENT METHODS
• Fracture Mechanics - the analysis of loads applied to bodies containing cracks
• Scanning Electron Microscopes - fracture surfaces can be analyzed at magnifications of thousands to determine
modes of failure
• Finite Element Analysis - the determination by numerical mathematics of stresses, temperatures at all positions
within a body,
• Computational Fluid Dynamics - this uses numerical mathematics to determine effects of fluids (gases or solids)
on components or structures
• Impact Dynamics - the use of numerical and analytical codes and models to determine the behavior of structures
when hit by fast-moving projectiles.
• Fracture Mechanics.

17. REASONS FOR COLLAPSE
• The collapse of a 110 foot section killed four people, injured three others, and left a
50 by 30 meter hole in the tubular design.
• Process Failure: A lack of detailed analysis and inadequate design checking allowed
construction of a poorly engineered structure.
• Structural Engineering Failure:
A number of design flaws were not caught during construction, including (1) a lack
of redundant supports; (2) poorly placed reinforcing steel; (3) weak outer steel struts;
(4) weak concrete support beams; and (5) low resistance to temperature.
• After the INVESTIGATION and careful disassembling, the structure was rebuilt with
a metal framework built upon the existing foundation. It reopened in the spring of
2008.

Fracture mechanics - the analysis of loads applied to bodies containing cracks
Scanning electron microscopes - fracture surfaces can be analyzed at magnifications of thousands to determine modes of failure, as well as the chemical composition of key components of the microstructure
Finite element analysis - the determination by numerical mathematics of stresses, temperatures at all positions within a body, rather than the analytical solution of simplified shapes
Computational fluid dynamics - this uses numerical mathematics to determine effects of fluids (gases or solids) on components or structures
Impact dynamics - the use of numerical and analytical codes and models to determine the behavior of structures when hit by fast-moving projectiles.
Fracture Mechanics
Fracture mechanics started with the ideas of Griffith in the 1920s on the fracture of brittle solids such as glass, where he suggested that the fracture strength was inversely proportional to the square root of the length of the largest crack (defect) present. Later in the 1950s, when fracture had been seen in metals without prior plastic (permanent) deformation, the concepts of fracture mechanics were developed.

The terminal had been open just 11 months when the roof collapsed
Paris Airport Charles De Gaulle
Opened in June 2003
Cost: 750m euros (£500m)
Floor space: 104,000 sq m
Capacity: six million passengers a year
Made from reinforced concrete and 36,000 sq m of glass
Plane parking gates: 10
Was the fatal collapse caused by design flaws or oversights in construction? The official investigation report clearly said both. A part of Terminal 2 failed for two reasons:
