What is a critical review?
A critical review is much more than a simple summary; it is an analysis and evaluation of a book, article,
or other medium. Writing a good critical review requires that you understand the material, and that you
know how to analyze and evaluate that material using appropriate criteria.
Steps to writing an effective critical review:
Reading
Skim the whole text to determine the overall thesis, structure and methodology. This will help you better
understand how the different elements fit together once you begin reading carefully.
Read critically. It is not enough to simply understand what the author is saying; it is essential to
challenge it. Examine how the article is structured, the types of reasons or evidence used to support the
conclusions, and whether the author is reliant on underlying assumptions or theoretical frameworks. Take
copious notes that reflect what the text means AND what you think about it.
Analyzing
Examine all elements. All aspects of the text—the structure, the methods, the reasons and evidence, the
conclusions, and, especially, the logical connections between all of these—should be considered.
The types of questions asked will vary depending on the discipline in which you are writing, but the
following samples will provide a good starting point:
Structure What type of text is it? (For example: Is it a primary source or secondary
source? Is it original research or a comment on original research?)
What are the different sections and how do they fit together?
Are any of the sections particularly effective (or ineffective)?
Methodology Is the research quantitative or qualitative?
Does the methodology have any weaknesses?
How does the design of the study address the hypothesis?

critical analysis that expresses your opinion and evaluation of it. Writing a critical review requires
both critical reading and critical writing.
Worth: 20% of your overall grade
Requirements

Uploaded to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
Follows the structure of a Critical Review
Do not use headings to divide your work into sections.
Document’s name should be your student number and name.

The length of an introduction is usually one paragraph for a journal article.
Include a few opening sentences that announce the author(s) and the title.
Briefly explain the topic of the text.
Present the aim of the text and summarise the main finding or key argument.
Conclude the introduction with a brief statement of your evaluation of the text. This can be a
positive or negative evaluation or a mixed response.
2. Overview
Present a summary of the key points along with a limited number of examples.
Briefly explain the author’s purpose/intentions throughout the text.
Briefly describe how the text is organised.
The overview should only make up about a third of the critical review.
3. Evaluation
The critique should be a balanced discussion and evaluation of the strengths, weakness and
notable features of the text.
Remember to base your discussion on specific criteria. Good reviews also include other
sources to support your evaluation (remember to reference).

Summary
Write a one paragraph summary of the main points of the paper. This is not an area for adding new information. That should be in the body of your paper. Do not forget to appropriately cite in references in this section too. This is a good place to pull in your course learning resources again.

The length of an introduction is usually one paragraph for a journal article.
Include a few opening sentences that announce the author(s) and the title.
Briefly explain the topic of the text.
Present the aim of the text and summarise the main finding or key argument.
Conclude the introduction with a brief statement of your evaluation of the text. This can be a
positive or negative evaluation or a mixed response.
2. Overview
Present a summary of the key points along with a limited number of examples.
Briefly explain the author’s purpose/intentions throughout the text.
Briefly describe how the text is organised.
The overview should only make up about a third of the critical review.
3. Evaluation
The critique should be a balanced discussion and evaluation of the strengths, weakness and
notable features of the text.
Remember to base your discussion on specific criteria. Good reviews also include other
sources to support your evaluation (remember to reference).

What is a critical review?
A critical review is much more than a simple summary; it is an analysis and evaluation of a book, article,
or other medium. Writing a good critical review requires that you understand the material, and that you
know how to analyze and evaluate that material using appropriate criteria.
Steps to writing an effective critical review:
Reading
Skim the whole text to determine the overall thesis, structure and methodology. This will help you better
understand how the different elements fit together once you begin reading carefully.
Read critically. It is not enough to simply understand what the author is saying; it is essential to
challenge it. Examine how the article is structured, the types of reasons or evidence used to support the
conclusions, and whether the author is reliant on underlying assumptions or theoretical frameworks. Take
copious notes that reflect what the text means AND what you think about it.
Analyzing
Examine all elements. All aspects of the text—the structure, the methods, the reasons and evidence, the
conclusions, and, especially, the logical connections between all of these—should be considered.
The types of questions asked will vary depending on the discipline in which you are writing, but the
following samples will provide a good starting point:
Structure What type of text is it? (For example: Is it a primary source or secondary
source? Is it original research or a comment on original research?)
What are the different sections and how do they fit together?
Are any of the sections particularly effective (or ineffective)?
Methodology Is the research quantitative or qualitative?
Does the methodology have any weaknesses?
How does the design of the study address the hypothesis?
Reasons/Evidence What sources does the author use (interviews, peer-reviewed journals,
government reports, journal entries, newspaper accounts, etc.)?
What types of reasoning are employed (inductive, deductive, abductive)?
What type of evidence is provided (empirical, statistical, logical, etc.)?
Are there any gaps in the evidence (or reasoning)?
Conclusions Does the data adequately support the conclusion drawn by the researcher(s)?
Are other interpretations plausible?
Are the conclusions dependent on a particular theoretical formulation?
What does the work contribute to the field?
Logic What assumptions does the author make?
Does the author account for all of the data, or are portions left out?
What alternative perspectives remain unconsidered?

During this module/week you will find an article dealing with the development and/or performance of a needs assessment. This may be an article about a community health assessment or about assessing the special needs of a population afflicted with a particular ailment. The article must come from the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, American Journal of Public Health, or another peer-reviewed source. Title Page
The primary goal of a title should be to summarize the main idea(s) of your paper simply and clearly. The title should be positioned in the upper half of the page and centered. Do not bold, underline, or italicize the title.

You will write your own abstract for the article, using the author's abstract as a model. You are to write an original abstract (short article summary) of no more than 100 words. Include your first name, middle initial(s), and last name. Omit all titles (e.g. Dr., Professor) and degrees (e.g. MA, PhD, EdD), if applicable. Methodolgy
This section will include Methods; Participants; Data Collection Procedures and Data Analysis Procedures. You will also discuss the quality of the 'literature review' your author completed before they wrote the article. In some cases, you will find a section that discusses the literature reviewed for the study. In other articles, the information is dispersed throughout the article. Discuss the following in this section: Was literature review present? Was it useful? Rigorous? What did you learn? Were there surprises?
Results
Report the results of the study as clearly as possible. If your article reported a quantitative study, report the results in numbers with a good level of detail. If this was a qualitative study, also report the outcomes of the study, being specific about emerging themes, topics, etc.
Conclusions and Recommendations
Did the researcher come to any conclusions or make recommendations? Sometimes this section is given a heading that says: Implications. This is the “so what” section of the research study. A research report, which is based on scientific method, is typically composed of the different sections listed below:
Introduction:

Methods:

Why the Flint-Rock Cannot Fight Back
Sto-Way’-Na—Flint—was rich and powerful. His lodge was toward the sunrise. It was guarded by Squr-hein— Crane. He was the watcher. He watched from the top of a lone tree. When anybody approached, Crane would call out and warn Flint, and Flint would come out of his lodge and meet the visitor.
There was an open flat in front of the lodge. Flint met all his visitors there. Warriors and hunters came and bought flint for arrow-points and spear-heads. They paid Flint big prices for the privilege of chipping off the hard stone. Some who needed flint for their weapons were poor and could not buy. These poor persons Flint turned away.
Coyote heard about Flint and, as he wanted some arrow-points, he asked his squas-tenk’ to help him. Squas-tenk’ refused.
“Hurry, do what I ask, or I will throw you away and let the rain wash you— wash you cold,” said Coyote, and then the power gave him three rocks that were harder than the flint-rock. It also gave him a little dog that had only one ear. But this ear was sharp, like a knife; it was a knife- ear.
Then to his wife, Mole, Coyote said: “Go and make your underground trails in the flat where Sto-way’-na lives. When you have finished and see me talking with him, show yourself so we can see you.”
Then Coyote set out for Flint’s lodge. As he got near it, he had his power make a fog to cover the land, and thick fog spread over everything. Crane, the watcher, up in the lone tree, could not see Coyote. He did not know that Coyote was around.
Coyote climbed the tree and took Crane from his high perch and broke his neck. Crane had no time to cry out. Then Coyote went on to Flint’s lodge. He was almost there when Flint’s dog, Grizzly Bear, jumped out of the lodge and ran toward him.
Coyote was not scared, and he yelled at Flint: “Stop your grizzly bear dog! Stop him, or my dog will kill him.”
That amused Flint, who was looking through the doorway. He saw that Coyote’s one-eared dog was very small, hardly a mouthful for Grizzly Bear. Fli.

Does the ringisei decision-making process by consensus, which is used by the Japanese, reach the same conclusion as the top-down methods, which are used by American management? Some might label the Japanese decision-making system as simply procrastination. Others appreciate the method and expect productive outcomes. If only half of an organization uses ringisei, it is likely to cause miscommunication and result in frustration.

Could the Japanese system of decision making have led to the controversy of what Toyota knew about unintended acceleration problems? This may be the best example of the use of silence in the Japanese culture frustrating Americans as a nation. This is not an explicit accusation of Toyota or of Japanese culture. Rather, it is inserted here to demonstrate potential consequences of management methods, processes, systems, and decision making. Read pages 106-108 of Luthans and Doh (2012) concerning this topic. The cause of the unintended acceleration problem announced by the United States government was due to bad floor mats or driver error. Initially, electronic problems were not mentioned.

What is a critical review?
A critical review is much more than a simple summary; it is an analysis and evaluation of a book, article,
or other medium. Writing a good critical review requires that you understand the material, and that you
know how to analyze and evaluate that material using appropriate criteria.
Steps to writing an effective critical review:
Reading
Skim the whole text to determine the overall thesis, structure and methodology. This will help you better
understand how the different elements fit together once you begin reading carefully.
Read critically. It is not enough to simply understand what the author is saying; it is essential to
challenge it. Examine how the article is structured, the types of reasons or evidence used to support the
conclusions, and whether the author is reliant on underlying assumptions or theoretical frameworks. Take
copious notes that reflect what the text means AND what you think about it.
Analyzing
Examine all elements. All aspects of the text—the structure, the methods, the reasons and evidence, the
conclusions, and, especially, the logical connections between all of these—should be considered.
The types of questions asked will vary depending on the discipline in which you are writing, but the
following samples will provide a good starting point:
Structure What type of text is it? (For example: Is it a primary source or secondary
source? Is it original research or a comment on original research?)
What are the different sections and how do they fit together?
Are any of the sections particularly effective (or ineffective)?
Methodology Is the research quantitative or qualitative?
Does the methodology have any weaknesses?
How does the design of the study address the hypothesis?
Reasons/Evidence What sources does the author use (interviews, peer-reviewed journals,
government reports, journal entries, newspaper accounts, etc.)?
What types of reasoning are employed (inductive, deductive, abductive)?
What type of evidence is provided (empirical, statistical, logical, etc.)?
Are there any gaps in the evidence (or reasoning)?
Conclusions Does the data adequately support the conclusion drawn by the researcher(s)?
Are other interpretations plausible?
Are the conclusions dependent on a particular theoretical formulation?
What does the work contribute to the field?
Logic What assumptions does the author make?
Does the author account for all of the data, or are portions left out?
What alternative perspectives remain unconsidered?
Are there any logical flaws in the construction of the argument?

During this module/week you will find an article dealing with the development and/or performance of a needs assessment. This may be an article about a community health assessment or about assessing the special needs of a population afflicted with a particular ailment. The article must come from the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, American Journal of Public Health, or another peer-reviewed source. You will read the article, evaluate needs assessment methodologies, briefly summarize its contents, and compare the findings to the assigned readings from Healthy People 2020 and other literature dealing with needs assessment methodologies.
Title Page
The primary goal of a title should be to summarize the main idea(s) of your paper simply and clearly. The title should be positioned in the upper half of the page and centered. Do not bold, underline, or italicize the title.
Article Abstract
You will write your own abstract for the article, using the author's abstract as a model. You are to write an original abstract (short article summary) of no more than 100 words. Include your first name, middle initial(s), and last name. Omit all titles (e.g. Dr., Professor) and degrees (e.g. MA, PhD, EdD), if applicable. Center and double space your name and the name of your college, university, or institution. The abstract should be on the title page.

Include the following headings in your article review section:
Introduction
In this section, discuss the following: Statement of the Problem; Purpose of the Study; Research Questions or Hypotheses and Limitations (if any).
Methodolgy
This section will include Methods; Participants; Data Collection Procedures and Data Analysis Procedures. You will also discuss the quality of the 'literature review' your author completed before they wrote the article. In some cases, you will find a section that discusses the literature reviewed for the study. In other articles, the information is dispersed throughout the article. Discuss the following in this section: Was literature review present? Was it useful? Rigorous? What did you learn? Were there surprises?
Results
Report the results of the study as clearly as possible. If your article reported a quantitative study, report the results in numbers with a good level of detail. If this was a qualitative study, also report the outcomes of the study, being specific about emerging themes, topics, etc.
Conclusions and Recommendations
Did the researcher come to any conclusions or make recommendations? Sometimes this section is given a heading that says: Implications. This is the “so what” section of the research study. What does it mean to practice? Expected length of article review: 2-3 pages. In your review, describe how your selected article addresses each of the sections listed above.

A research report, which is based on scientific method, is typically composed of the different sections listed below:
Introduction:
The introduction states a specific hypothesis and how that hypothesis was derived by connecting it to previous research.
Methods:
The methods section describes the details of how the hypothesis was tested and clarifies why the study was conducted in that particular way.
Results:
The results section is where the raw uninterpreted data is presented.
Discussion:
The discussion section is where an argument is presented on whether or not the data supports the hypothesis, the possible implications and limitations of the study, as well as possible future directions for this type of research.
Together, these sections should tell the reader what was done, how it was done, and what was learned through the research. You will create a research report based on a

problem, sample, results, and literature review. Organize your data by creating meaningful sections within your report. Make sure that you:
Apply key concepts of inferential hypothesis tests.
Interpret the research findings of the study.
Examine the assumptions and limitations of inferential tests.

Focus of the Research Report
To begin, create a hypothetical research study (you do not have to carry out the study; you will just have to describe it) that is based on the three pieces of information listed below. Sto-Way’-Na—Flint—was rich and powerful. His lodge was toward the sunrise. It was guarded by Squr-hein— Crane. He was the watcher. He watched from the top of a lone tree. When anybody approached, Crane would call out and warn Flint, and Flint would come out of his lodge and meet the visitor.
There was an open flat in front of the lodge. Flint met all his visitors there. Warriors and hunters came and bought flint for arrow-points and spear-heads. They paid Flint big prices for the privilege of chipping off the hard stone. Some who needed flint for their weapons were poor and could not buy. These poor persons Flint turned away.
Coyote heard about Flint and, as he wanted some arrow-points, he asked his squas-tenk’ to help him. Squas-tenk’ refused.
“Hurry, do what I ask, or I will throw you away and let the rain wash you— wash you cold,” said Coyote, and then the power gave him three rocks that were harder than the flint-rock. It also gave him a little dog that had only one ear. But this ear was sharp, like a knife; it was a knife- ear.
Then to his wife, Mole, Coyote said: “Go and make your underground trails in the flat where Sto-way’-na lives. When you have finished and see me talking with him, show yourself so we can see you.”
Then Coyote set out for Flint’s lodge. As he got near it, he had his power make a fog to cover the land, and thick fog spread over everything. Crane, the watcher, up in the lone tree, could not see Coyote. He did not know that Coyote was around.
Coyote climbed the tree and took Crane from his high perch and broke his neck. Crane had no time to cry out. Then Coyote went on to Flint’s lodge. He was almost there when Flint’s dog, Grizzly Bear, jumped out of the lodge and ran toward him.
Coyote was not scared, and he yelled at Flint: “Stop your grizzly bear dog! Stop him, or my dog will kill him.”

Identify the hypothesis or question being tested Summarize the overall article. Identify the conclusions of the authors Indicate whether or not you think the data support their conclusions/hypothesis Consider alternative explanations for the results Provide any additional comments pertaining to other approaches to testing their hypothesis (logical follow-up studies to build on, confirm or refute the conclusions) The relevance or importance of the study

The appropriateness of the experimental design When you write your evaluation, be brief and concise, this is not meant to be an essay but an objective evaluation that one can read very easily and quickly. Also, you should include a complete reference (title, authors, journal, issue, pages) you turn in your evaluation. This is good practice for your literature review, which you’ll be completing during the dissertation process.
