1. For Good Contextual Analysis
The musical is based on a novel of the same title by Gregory Maguire. In this
retelling of “The Wizard of Oz,” Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and Elphaba,
the Wicked Witch of the West, have secretly been best friends since they were
roommates in college. As their lives lead them in dramatically different directions, the
two witches realise they must part from each other “For Good.” Their final song is a
beautiful ballad expressing how profoundly their friendship has changed each of their
lives. The song is performed near the end of the musical, as the two are bidding
each other farewell. Immediately prior to the song, Elphaba gives Glinda the
Grimmerie and tells her that it is now up to her to continue Elphaba's cause. After
this song, Elphaba leaves and is supposedly melted by Dorothy (this is later revealed
to be an elaborate scheme to fool the citizens of Oz into thinking she was dead so
they would stop hunting her). At the song's conclusion, Fiyero, turned into "The
Scarecrow" by one of Elphaba's spells gone awry, discovers Elphaba and they run
away together. It is the climax and one of the most well-known songs of the show
and is reprised as part of the show's finale. The theme of wicked is racism and
prejudice, good and evil and social issues, these three closely link together as the
message behind the story is how prejudice and discrimination toward people may
lead them to take the wrong path.
Wicked is more fantasy, therefore it would not have a time to be set in, it is also a
book musical due to the fact that it follows the forms of traditional theatre as it has a
very strong story that drives the rest of the music, acting and dance. In Wicked the
protagonist is Elphaba and the antagonist is Glinda and throughout the musical we
get to see the story of the opposing girls with very different personalities and
viewpoints become friends. I am playing the character Elphaba; she is born in
Munchkinland to a minister, Frex, and his wife, Melena. She grows up in the marshy
Quadling Country in the south of Oz, where she sees the Wizard's people decimate
the local population. At Shiz University, she becomes aware of the Wizard's
oppression of sentient Animals and eventually drops out of school to move to the
Emerald City and join a radical resistance network. She falls in love with Fiyero, a
married prince from the western Vinkus region. When the Wizard's troops kill Fiyero
because of his connection to Elphaba, she goes to his home in Kiamo Ko to seek his
wife's forgiveness. There she studies sorcery and continues research on Animals
and animals. Her temperament and her activities earn her the nickname the Wicked
Witch of the West. she has certain traits like: Wicked, Green, Misunderstood,
Outcast, Smart, Fiery, Sensitive, Passionate, Sincere, Underdog, Talented,
Precocious, Sharp, Thrilling, Powerhouse, Intense, Broody, Intelligent, Activist,
Advocate. Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba and Glinda, whose
relationship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, same
love-interest, reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government. In the play prior to ‘For
Good’ The song is performed near the end of the musical, as the two are bidding

Grimmerie and tells her that it is now up to her to continue Elphaba's cause. After
this song, Elphaba leaves and is supposedly melted by Dorothy (this is later revealed
to be an elaborate scheme to fool the citizens of Oz into thinking she was dead so
they would stop hunting her). At the song's conclusion, Fiyero, turned into "The
Scarecrow" by one of Elphaba's spells gone awry, discovers Elphaba and they run
away together. It is the climax and one of the most well-known songs of the show
and is reprised as part of the show's finale. In the piece, singing and acting are used,
as it is more of a ballad so there would not be any back up dancers on the stage with
them.
In the song there is a pit band used; it's large and consists of both orchestral and
contemporary band instruments. Orchestral instruments like: flute. oboe. bass
clarinet. bassoon. baritone saxophone. two horns. two trumpets. two trombones.
percussion. harp. two violins. viola. cello. And band instruments like: drum kit. two
guitars. three synthesisers. Skills that are evident in this piece are, harmonising.
Furthermore vibrato is used in the higher notes and you can probably imply it
elsewhere throughout the piece.
In rehearsals Ria and I are now working on finalising the harmonies, as well as
beginning to add characterisation. We separate each part of the harmony, in order to
work on our own parts and focusing on slowly piecing them together, we kept going
over the the parts that we made errors on like; “but I have changed for the better”
where we both come in together, but we swap so i go to the lower part as Elphaba in
this song is in a higher octave that Glinda who usually sings in the higher octave but
she is lower throughout this song.
