STUDENT 1 DISCUSSION
For this week’s discussion I chose the video by Rob Hopkins: Transition to a world without oil. I believe in this video, the type of claim he used was a proposal argument. During this video Hopkins talks about how oil is causing ecological problems on our planet, due to the fact that we have become so reliable on it and use it for many things. One of the main points he mentioned was the melting of the artic, which so many people believe is the cause of how we treat our planet, while others disagree.
The aspect I thought was strong in his argument was the fact that he has a group called The Transition Response. He proposed this group for anyone to join to help fight against the ecological problem caused by the extreme use of oil. The only part I thought was weak about his stand on this problem was that he didn’t have too many facts to back himself up. So many people think that we are the cause of melting ice caps and global warming, but others feel differently. More facts would have made a stronger case for him.
Looking over the Toulmin Model I believe I will use it to help prove not only my views on how I feel about my paper, but I will be able to use facts and situations to prove my thoughts and views. Using backing and rebuttals as mentioned in the Toulmin Model will also be great ideas to use in my paper. This will allow me to state how other people may not think that correct supplies and parents are a huge part of student success, however, I will be able to provide evidence and facts that they truly are.
STUDENT 2 DISCUSSION
Hello class!
The Ted talk i choice was on the topic regarding the hiring process. Regina Hartley, identified two different types of resumes. The silver spoon, which is a person who has lived a life aimed for success, and the scrapper. The scraper is a person who has lived a life of obstacles but overcomes the statistics to become successful.
In my opinion, I believe the claim is... When looking for a new hire, all qualifying applicants should be given the chance to prove themselves, disregarding their resume. This claim is an ethical argument. Regina wants to change the way people choose new hires, and encourages people to see a oddball resume, as a dedication to achieve greatness.
Regina has a strong argument that people who have over come adversity can be extremely successful. Regina provide 3 examples, including Steve Jobs and herself. She also talks about her childhood poverty and her drive to become successful after college. Regina's weakest argument was when she discussed her experience work with a "silver spoon". Regina only had one short breif description of the worker.
How I will use the toulmin model to strengthen my argument, is to focus on the models reinforcement steps. The toulmin models shows th.

Hello class!
The Ted talk i choice was on the topic regarding the hiring
2. process. Regina Hartley, identified two different types of

who has lived a life of obstacles but overcomes the statistics to

How I will use the toulmin model to strengthen my argument, is
to focus on the models reinforcement steps. The toulmin models
shows that if you want to support your claim, you need to use
logic that the audience will understand, rather that quoting
statistics over and over again. Creating a foundation for your
argument, so the audience can understand where your claims are
coming from. Lastly, the most important step of the toulmin
model is to have a rebuttal for a counterargument. Some people
are not always going to agree with you so you need to be
prepared to fully explain to the audience on why your claim is
believable.

water, while items whose density is lower than that of the water
float on the water. It is evident that the stone, glass and the
bottle top all have a higher density than that of the water.
On the other hand, the plastic, the paper and the wood have a
lower density than that of the water.

The rubber, pencil, the piece of paper and the plastic cup all

Drop each of the materials into the jar filled with water, one at

others will sink.

In an experiment involving sinking and floating, plastics, wood
and paper items float on the water while all items whose density
is higher than that of water sink in to the water. The stones and
glass have a higher density than the water, therefore they are
expected to sink into the water.
