Food Tech Research Homework By: Harold Lee 8Q1

The first commercially grown genetically modified whole food crop was a tomato (called FlavrSavr), which
was modified to ripen without softening, by Calgene, later a subsidiary of Monsanto.[7] Calgene took the
initiative to obtain FDA approval for its release in 1994 without any special labeling, although legally no
such approval was required.[8] It was welcomed by consumers who purchased the fruit at a substantial
premium over the price of regular tomatoes. However, production problems[7] and competition from a
conventionally bred, longer shelf-life variety prevented the product from becoming profitable. A tomato
produced using similar technology to the Flavr Savr was used by Zeneca to produce tomato paste which was
sold in Europe during the summer of 1996.

These plants have been modified in the laboratory to enhance desired traits such as increased resistance to
herbicides or improved nutritional content. The enhancement of desired traits has traditionally been
undertaken through breeding, but conventional plant breeding methods can be very time consuming and are
often not very accurate.

Disease resistance There are many viruses, fungi and bacteria that cause plant diseases. Plant biologists are
working to create plants with genetically-engineered resistance to these diseases

Cold tolerance Unexpected frost can destroy sensitive seedlings. An antifreeze gene from cold water fish has
been introduced into plants such as tobacco and potato. With this antifreeze gene, these plants are able to
tolerate cold temperatures that normally would kill unmodified seedlings10. (Note: I have not been able to
find any journal articles or patents that involve fish antifreeze proteins in strawberries, although I have seen
such reports in newspapers. I can only conclude that nothing on this application has yet been published or
patented.)

Nutrition Malnutrition is common in third world countries where impoverished peoples rely on a single crop
such as rice for the main staple of their diet. However, rice does not contain adequate amounts of all
necessary nutrients to prevent malnutrition. If rice could be genetically engineered to contain additional
vitamins and minerals, nutrient deficiencies could be alleviated.

Although "biotechnology" and "genetic modification" commonly are used interchangeably, GM is a special
set of technologies that alter the genetic make up of organisms such as animals, plants, or bacteria.
Biotechnology, a more general term, refers to using organisms or their components, such as enzymes, to
make products that include wine, cheese, beer, and yoghurt.

In 2006, 252 million acres of transgenic crops were planted in 22 countries by 10.3 million farmers. The
majority of these crops were herbicide- and insect-resistant soya beans, corn, cotton, canola, and alfalfa.
Other crops grown commercially or field-tested are a sweet potato resistant to a virus that could decimate
most of the African harvest, rice with increased iron and vitamins that may alleviate chronic malnutrition in
Asian countries, and a variety of plants able to survive weather extremes. In 2006, countries that grew 97%
of the global transgenic crops were the United States (53%), Argentina (17%), Brazil (11%), Canada (6%),
India (4%), China (3%), Paraguay (2%) and South Africa (1%). Although growth is expected to plateau in
industrialized nations, it is increasing in developing countries. The next decade will see exponential progress
in GM product development as researchers gain increasing and unprecedented access to genomic resources
that are applicable to organisms beyond the scope of individual projects
