2. GM FOODS ???
• Genetically Modification (GM) Foods is crop plants created for
human or animal consumption, which have been modified in
the laboratory to enhance desired traits or improved
nutritional content.
• First commercially grown whole food crop was tomato puree (
Flavr Savr )

5. ISSUES RELATED TO GM CROPS
MYTHS
(1) Food produced using biotechnology has not
been established as safe and not adequately
regulated.
(2) Crops produced using biotechnology will
negatively impact the environment.
6. ISSUES RELEVANT TO INDIAN CONTEXT
• Indian government experimenting with GM
crops and foods !
• Will GM food reduce hunger in developing
countries like India !
• Crops like golden rice can help remove
blindness !
7. Contd….
• What GM crops and food items in India
experimenting with?
– Cotton
– Maize
– Sorghum
– Brinjal
– potato

9. POSITIVE IMPACT OF GM CROPS
• Reduced use of pesticides and herbicides.
• Improved crop quality.
• Improved nutritional quality.
• Potentially drought resistance.
• Foods with greater shelf life.
10. NEGATIVE IMPACT OF GM CROPS
• Some gene products may be allergens.
• Insects might develop resistance to pesticide –
producing GM crops.
• There may be unintended harm to wildlife
(leads to monoculture)and beneficial insects.
11. HOW INDIA FITS IN THE PICTURE OF
GM CROPS?
• In India GM crops like the Golden Rice (rich in
proteins ) have been used.
• Unfortunately , the GM business is owned by
top multinational companies and agri-
business is only for vested interests.
12. INDIA BECOMING A DUMPING
GROUND FOR GM CROPS
• While other countries want to get rid of GM
crops due to heath and environment issues,
India is fast turning into dustbin for new
technology.
• Scientists are trying to insert Bt gene into any
crop , not knowing whether this is desirable or
not.
13.
14. CONCLUSION
• India is under tremendous pressure from
biotechnology industry to allow GM crops because of
political support. So this has to be cut down.
• Agricultural scientists use GM Crop as a tool to ensure
livelihood for the past 3 decades.
• GM Food Crops should be banned in India because of
certain allergens and it is unnatural food.eg Use of Bt
Brinjal, Bt tomato etc should be banned.
• GM Non food crops can only be allowed in India under
certain conditions.eg Bt Cotton
