Hand Washing WSU Nursing October 2009
What are Germs?? Germs are invisible organisms. They can be bacteria , viruses , or fungi . Some germs are bad… some are good.
Where Do Germs Live?? Germs live EVERYWHERE . Remember, some are good, and some are bad… We want to keep our good germs and get rid of the bad germs… How do we get rid of the bad germs???
WE WASH OUR HANDS!!!
When Should We Wash Our Hands?? *After we cough or sneeze. *Before we eat meals, or help cook food. *After we play outside. *After we use the bathroom. *When there is anything visible on our hands! *After we play with our pets.
What Do We Need to Wash?? Warm Water Antibacterial Soap Paper towels/Towels A fun song to sing for 20-30 seconds!
-If your happy and you know it, wash your hands! -If your happy and you know it, wash your hands! -If your happy and you know, then your face will surely show it… -If your happy and you know it, wash your hands! Wash, wash, wash your hands Play our handy game. Rub and scrub, and scrub and rub. Germs go down the drain.  HEY! Wash, wash, wash your hands Play our handy game. Rub and scrub, and scrub and rub. Dirt goes down the drain.  HEY! Songs to Practice
Washing Your Hands Remember, you need to scrub your hands! Water is not magic… Use your soap and scrub! (Do not forget your fingernails have a LOT of bacteria!)
What Else Can We Use?? Instant hand sanitizer is a good substitute for soap and water if you are not near a bathroom! Pets tongues are NOT good substitutes for soap and water! (yes… that is a camel!)
What About Our Faces?? Put your hand up like a karate chop… Make your other hand like another karate chop, but the other direction… THIS IS THE “T-ZONE” This is how germs get into our bodies. We should NOT touch the T-Zone!!
What About Coughing?? If you need to cough or sneeze … Use your elbow !
What Do We Now Know?? Germs are everywhere! We wash to keep ourselves from getting sick. Warm water, soap, and rubbing is key! When in doubt, WASH YOUR HANDS!!!
Thanks from Nursing Students!!
