 Common types are male-pattern baldness, female-
pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, and thinning of
hair which is known as telogen effluvium.
 Most common:- Androgenetic Alopecia
Magnified view of scalp
Magnified view of hair follicle
Causes
 Genetics
 Hormonal:- Dihydrotestosterone
 Stress
 Infection
 Drugs:- hormone replacement therapy, steroids,
antidiabetics, antihypertensives, chemotherapy, oral
contraceptives, etc
Causes: continued
 Trauma
 Nutritional Deficiencies: Vitamin D, folic acid, zinc,
biotin, Iron, etc.
 Pregnancy, thyroid abnormalities, autoimmune
disorders, dandruff
 Others
Hair Cycle
 Anagen : Growth Phase
 Catagen: Transition Phase

How much hair fall is normal?
 The most important question
 In general hair fall upto 100 hair is normal
 >100 hair loss/day!!!!! Consult doctor
Tests
 Clinical examination by specialist
 Daily Hair Counts
 Pull Test
 Pluck Test
 Trichoscopy
 Scalp Biopsy
 Blood Tests
Classification of hair loss
 Norwood Classification
How to prevent?
 The big question????
 Early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to
prevent baldness.
 Do you have family history of hair loss? (if yes then
you are most probably suffering from androgenetic
alopecia)
Seek Expert Opinion
 Seek qualified medical opinion for your hair loss.
 Your hair are precious
 At present there is no gold standard or assured
treatment for hair loss
 This means whoever is claiming to have 100%
guaranteed result for hair loss……….!!!!!
 In our practice we routinely encounter several
patients who have wasted lot of time and money at
several centres claiming guaranteed anti hair loss
packages or medications but have failed.
Stay informed and alert !!
Home Care and prevention
 Avoid trauma to hair: use wide toothed comb
 De-stress
 Avoid chemicals on hair
 Avoid smoking, alcohol, drug use causing hair loss
 Drink lot of water, eat plenty of green vegetables and
fruits.
 Use ketoconazole shampoo and good conditioners.
Prevents hair loss, dandruff and fungal infection.
 Aloe Vera, Triphala, curcumin etc. have been tried
with variable results.
 Saw palmetto oil, rosemary oil, pumpkin seed oil,
have shown beneficial effects.
Young Hye Cho et al. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med.
2014; 2014: 549721.
 Take diet and supplements rich in iron, biotin, folic
acid and zinc.
 Onion oil application with honey/aloe is a grandma
formulae for hair fall
 Take proper sleep and rest.
Medicines
 May prevent hair loss
 Minoxidil: FDA approved, available in 2%/5%/10%
topical applications.
 Recommended as first line therapy for male and female
pattern baldness.
 To be used daily once or twice as directed by physician
 Long term use is needed
 Hair loss may recur if discontinued
Zenildo Santos et al Expert Opin Drug Discov. 2015 Mar;
10(3): 269–292
 Finestride: FDA approved
 For male pattern baldness
 Dose: 1mg/day or as directed by physician
 Side effects: erectile dysfunction. To be cautiously
used in young adults
 Other:Dutasteride
 Others: Corticosteroids
 Immunosuppressants
 Spironolactones
 Anthralin
 Etc.
Mesotherapy
 Non-invasive technique
 Superficial microinjections, just below the epidermis,
into the target tissues.
 Directly injecting the drug and nutrients at the target
site near hair roots
 Increases collagen production and blood circulation
 Multiple sessions are required
 Has shown positive results in hair loss
Derma Roller
 Another microneedling device
 Can be used in clinic and at home by patient
 Increases collagen synthesis
 Improves blood circulation
 Activation of stem cells
 Once in a week with topical applications give
additive effects
Rachita Dhurat et al. Int J Trichology. 2013 Jan-Mar; 5: 6–11
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
 Derived from blood
 Rich in platelets which releases platelet derived
growth factors, transforming growth factors, EGF
and VEGF
 Safe, effective and cheap method
 Multiple sessions are required
Parul Singhal et al. Asian J Transfus Sci. 2015 Jul-Dec; 9(2): 159–
162.
Low level laser therapy
 Photobiostimulation
 FDA approved laser combs are available
 Accurate wavelength (approx 635-650nm and
technique is important.
 Positive results
 Expensive
Pinar Avci et al. Lasers Surg Med. 2014 Feb; 46(2): 144–151.
Hair Transplant
 Surgical technique
 Can be used to restore lost hairline or grow hair at
bald areas.
 Does not prevent further hair loss. Adjuvant
treatment may be required
 Transplanted hair grow in 6-12 months
 Hair are harvested from back of the head.
 Transplanted hair grow and grays naturally.
Resistant to hormonal action hence survive for long
 Two techniques are widely used
1. FUT or strip technique: fast. Causes scarring
2. FUE: individual follicular grafts (bunch of 2-4 hair
follicles) are harvested and are implanted on bald
area. Minimal scar, time consuming.
Good success rate under expert guidance and care
Paul T RoseClin Cosmet Investig Dermatol. 2015; 8: 361–370.
