Medical Management of Hair Loss
For the Integrative Medicine Practice 5/15/14
Workshop Director:
Alan J. Bauman, M.D. – Diplomate, American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery
Course Description:
Hair loss affects roughly 35 million men and 21 million women in the United States. Forty percent of men will have noticeable hair loss by age thirty‐five and sixty‐five percent of women will have noticeable hair loss by the time they are sixty years of age. Hereditary hair loss, or Androgenetic Alopecia, has cosmetic implications often associated with the aging process, can also be an indicator of other imbalances or disease within the human body. Because chronic and progressive hair loss often deeply impacts the quality of life of its sufferers, the negative psychosocial implications for the hair loss sufferer as well as the positive benefits of treatment should be strongly taken into consideration.
Learning Objectives:
In this one-day module, the participants will learn about the etiology, diagnosis, psychosocial impact and non-surgical management of androgenetic alopecia from hair loss expert, Alan J. Bauman, M.D. The anatomy and physiology of hair follicle structure and function and phases of the hair cycle will be explained in detail. Participants will learn about hair loss risk factors such as genetics, the effects of hormones, hair loss associated with the use of specific medications and supplements, in addition to medical conditions that influence hair follicle function and how to identify them. Participants will learn how to consult with the hair loss sufferer, evaluate and scientifically measure hair loss via cross-sectional trichometry, high-powered dermoscopy and global photography. They will learn to diagnose using the standard Norwood-Hamilton and Ludwig-Savin scales as well as identify and rule out non-hereditary hair loss with the purpose of developing a realistic short and long-term treatment plan. Exploration of the various modalities to combat hair loss will be discussed including the importance of hormone balancing, basic knowledge of herbal/natural remedies, mechanism and protocols of laser and light-based devices, pros and cons of traditional and pharmacy-compounded medical therapy, as well as the latest information on the application of cell therapy, growth factors and stem cells will be discussed. Instruction will be given on how to create a customized results-oriented treatment, tracking and follow-up/compliance protocol for patients suffering from common female and male pattern hair loss. Attendees will also leave this session with suggested office space plans, patient flow and staffing recommendations for incorporating the medical management of hair loss into their practice as either a stand-alone service or as an integrated part of their existing treatment offerings.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Saw Palmetto Benefits Saw palmetto extract is used
by people all over the world to treat and cure male
and female patterned baldness. Whether you are a

a long history of being used as an herbal remedy.
Mayans drank saw palmetto extract as a health tonic.
5. American Indians used the leaves and fruit to treat
lung disorders, urinary and genital issues, and as an
antiseptic for wounds. The most widely known use
today is for the reduction of benign enlargement of
the prostate. Prostate enlargement can result in
sexual dysfunction and stopped and slowed urination
6. Research has shown that saw palmetto has the same
effects as the pharmaceutical drug, Finasteride in
treating patients for hair loss and with benign
prostate enlargement. Finasteride is also used in hair
tonic shampoos. Go To Top The greatest benefit is as
much as what it does not do:
7. Saw Palmetto Side Effects
Most products have a few common side effects and
then rare to possible allergic responses. Saw

8. nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. Some
people have reported that saw palmetto causes
impotence. But these side efect do not seem to occur
any more often with saw palmetto.
9. Effect on Sexual Function
Saw Palmetto does not have the same negative
effects on sexual function that pharmaceutical drugs
do. Pharmaceutical creams and pills use harsh
chemicals to stop hair loss. These medications
create difficult sexual side effects in men that make
hair loss or frustration an unfair tradeoff.
10. Pharmaceutical drugs like finasteride and lower the
sex drive, create impotence and make orgasm

who use steroids are working during and after their
steroid cycle against the balance of reducing
testosterone and increasing estrogen. This is also the
reason many chronic bodybuilder steroid users are

man or a woman. The results are identical whether
you are a man or a woman, which is not a claim that

12. Woman suffering from hair loss can start personal
use with saw palmetto in the same way as men. I do
recommend that men and women discuss treatments
like this with their medical professional mostly
because there are many reasons why hair loss occurs.
Male and female pattern receding hairlines or
thinning hair is common and most often is caused by
androgenic alopecia. The times when it isn’t can
mean a more serious condition exists that self-
treatment could delay identifying
13. Saw Palmetto Research
Many people rightly worry about the safety of
taking natural remedies. Studies done by the
National Institute of Health, however, show saw
palmetto extract to be extremely safe. There is little
risk of interaction with other drugs and few if any
side effects. If you're suffering from baldness then
saw palmetto extract is an excellent choice for
treatment. Saw palmetto is con sidered safe and
effective.
14. With the popularity of saw palmetto extract soaring,
it's easy to find at your local pharmacist or wherever
herbal medicines vitamin supplements are sold.
However, most people choose to buy it online
because of the great deals that can be found. A 90
day course is the recommended amount, and even
with shipping, you can find the same high quality for
less money on the internet.
Summary
15. Saw palmetto is considered as effective as
prescription hair loss treatments, with the added
bonus of being very protective for the prostate in
men and urinary functions in men and women.
