Palo Alto Teenager
For a Palo Alto teenager, it may seem contradictory when I say I don t like spending my parents
money. Although I live in one of the wealthiest suburbs, some part of me just feels unworthy of
spending my parents hard earned money. I suppose it s because when my parents immigrated here
from China, they had to leave behind a secure and financially stable life back in China and start anew
in the United States with hardly anything. All the hard work they ve done since then to get to where
they are now are the fruits of their own labor over the years, not mine. As such, I feel undeserving of
picking the fruits from a tree I didn t help grow. I ll admit, there are times when I feel my self imposed
restrictions only serve to disadvantage me compared

Shirley Temple Essay
Pecola s quest for blue eyes is a direct representation for her search for comfort and love. Pecola is
fascinated by Shirley Temple. The narrator, Claudia MacTeer, talks about Pecola saying We knew she
was fond of the Shirley Temple cup and took every opportunity to drink milk out of it just to handle
and see sweet Shirley s face (Morrison, 1970, p.23). This is when it becomes evident to the reader that
Pecola is obsessed with Shirley Temple. To Pecola, Shirley Temple is the perfect girl and she wants to
be like her. She believes blue eyes would allow her to be more like Shirley Temple, which would
make people love her just like people love Shirley Temple. Pecola is obsessed with the young star,
Shirley Temple, because Shirley Temple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 1940s, movies were the many source of entertainment for people. Movies were exclusively for
rich, white people. The movies served as entertainment for rich people, poor people, black people, and
white people. With this being said, it is obvious Hollywood had enormous power over people s idea of
beauty. At this time in history, Hollywood s idea of beauty corresponds with the idea of beauty
portrayed by white society. Even Pecola s mother, Pauline Breedlove, at one point in her life is
obsessed with movies and white actresses. Her obsession with the movies occurs before she had
children. While Cholly is at work, she constantly goes to the movies. She day dreams about white
movie stars, because at the time African Americans did not have leading roles. Pauline has a fixation
on the actress, Jean Harlow. This obsession is similar to Pecola s obsession with Shirley Temple.
Pauline describes a time when she went to see a Jean Harlow movie. She says, I fixed my hair up like
I d seen hers in a magazine (Morrison, 1970, p.123). Pauline was born with a limp foot, lost a few of
her teeth, and ultimately sees herslef as ugly. She does her hair like Jean Harlow hoping it will make
her beautiful. Changing her hair style is not a permanent change, but it allowed her to feel beautiful
for a small amount of time. Pauline s desperation for beauty is also inherited by her daughter,

The Pros And Cons Of African American Vernacular English
African American vernacular English has been frowned upon since its very beginning due to the
oppressors thinking of it as improper. June Jordan thought the very same thing when she spoke up
about it in Nobody Mean More to Me Than You and stated ...white standards of English persis,
supreme and unquestioned, in these United States. Despite our multilingual population, and despite
the deepening Black white cleavage within that conglomerate, white standards control our official and
popular judgements of verbal proficiency and correct, or incorrect, language skills, including speech.
That being said, standard English is found to be more appropriate to write a formal letter or article of
great importance, than vernacular English because it will reach out to a greater audience and will be
interpreted much better. There are pros and cons when it comes to whether or not one should speak in
either vernacular or standard English with one of those being the location and environment are two
major considerations. Sadly, that is what it has all come down to and it is noted by June Jordan ...as an
endangered species... meaning it is rather difficult to find people that speak vernacular English,
nowadays, without conforming themselves to the oppressor s ways. Her statement is agreeable in the
sense that slaves were brought to the United States not knowing the language and were forced to learn,
what they called, the oppressor s language. They might have been stripped of their

Alan Greenspan
Alan Greenspan Alan Greenspan, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, has always fascinated the
financial community. Whatever he says can make or break the markets. He is a highly educated
economist with many years of experience. People seek for his advice and obey his judgments. His
proclamations are repeated and expounded upon. Greenspan is loved, feared, and never ever
questioned. As a result of being a strong chairman of the Fed, he has made a difference the U.S.
economy through his way of dealing with inflation. Also, the presidency no longer counterbalances or
even criticizes the Fed. First of all, we will consider his background. Alan Greenspan was born on

economy. Economist Allen Sinai said, The Greenspan Fed is the all time champion in American
history (Church par. 1). In 1996 and 1997 he didn t do much of anything to the interest rates. From
February 1996 to December 1997, the Fed made only one change in interest rates: a quarter point
increase in March of 1997. He resisted pressure from inside and outside the Fed to slow down the
economy. Instead of being overly concerned about inflation, he seemed to have accepted the idea that
deep changes in the economy have made sustained growth possible without pushing prices up.
(Church par. 2) Because of Alan Greenspan, the Fed has learned to be more patient. It allows the
economy to grow faster than expected without putting on the brakes by raising interest rates.
However, Greenspan always stays on guard. He is a renowned numbers cruncher who keeps tabs on
the most obscure corners of the economy. Robin Leight Pemberton said that he was likely to back up
his predictions by citing such obscure data as vacuum cleaner sales in Iowa (Church Par 3). Greenspan
is reaping the praise of the financial community. There is a widely held sense that he has
masterminded the nation s prosperity. As many people are becoming stockholders, they regard him as

Drake Equation Research Paper
The Drake Equation is used to estimate of the rate at which stars are born in the galaxy, the fraction of
stars with planets, and the fraction of those planets on which life could originate, and so on. Although,
by those calculations, there should be about 10,000 civilizations in our galaxy capable of interstellar
communication. So, where are all the aliens? Extraterrestrial intelligence must exist somewhere in the
universe, but we might not be able to communicate with each other because of complications such as
different forms of communication, huge distances between each other, and/or they don t want to talk
back.
In today s society, programs backed by private sources of funding (nonprofit), such as SETI (Search

It s reasonable to assume that how we re trying to communicate with possible extraterrestrial
intelligence may not be how they communicate, resulting in us believing no one is listening. It is
possible that our means of communication are primitive in comparison, and that our logic may be
vastly different than theirs. For example, if you were to send morse code in the hopes of someone
responding, it s mostly that no one is going to respond, let alone even notice it. Secondly, we may
have not been looking in the right places either. A prime reason for this is that we really don t know
where to look in the first place. We have ideas, but nothing concrete whatsoever. Another reason may
just be that we haven t had enough time yet, as we can only send messages so quickly, in so many
different directions to cover a possible infinite space across the

Hypoglycemia Research Papers
Hypoglycemia describes an abnormally low level of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Hypoglycemia is not
a disease in itself, rather it is a sign of a health problem. The aspect of this study is as followed:
Hypoglycemia has been a common clinical condition known to affect human development. Little has
been done to define the resultant brain biochemical alterations. A controlled study of hypoglycemia in
the newborn human infant is impossible, the infant rat was chosen as a model. During this experiment
hypoglycemia was induced once daily for 18 days following birth resulted in generalized diminution
of brain weight, cellularity, and protein content. The rate of formation of the myelin lipid sulfatide was
decreased, as was the quantity of cerebroside sulfatied in brains of hypoglycemic animals.
Phospholipids, gangliosides, and cholesterol were decreased only in proportion to the decrease in the
brain weight. Brain glucose and glycogen concentrations were low in the brains of hypoglycemic
animals, although ATP and phosphocreatine levels were not decreased. Damage of the brain in human
infants has been associated with neonatal hypoglycemia, particularly when not treated early and when
the infants are symptomatic. Neonatal hypoglycemia related to gestational age, size, ... Show more

Grey s Anatomy Character Analysis
Shonda, Please Stop Killing my Favorite Characters Love, hate, life, death, and medicine; the five
crucial parts of ABC s hit TV show, Grey s Anatomy. Grey s Anatomy is a show that first premiered
on March 27, 2005. The script was written, produced, and even created by Shonda Rhimes. Some
people consider Shonda to be evil based on the plot of the show, and I do too. On the other hand, she
did create a show that many people enjoy to watch including me. I am still an active watcher even
after 14 seasons of this show. Even though I like the show so much, I found areas in the show to
critique that include the plot and the actors. The first area to critique is the plot. The first seasons of
Grey s Anatomy revolves around five new surgical interns of ... Show more content on

They are all trying to reach the goal of becoming a surgical resident in the hospital, which is the
highest position in the surgical field other than the Chief of Surgery. During their climb to the top,
they all experience dramatic moments during the show. For example, Izzie falls in love with a patient
at Seattle Grace and breaks a lot of rules to save his life. This ended Izzie s internship and the patient
ended up dying. During these scenes, Izzie was acting crazy, and she was devastated when the patient
died. The way that Izzie was portrayed was not fair and mean. Shonda made her look like she was
actually crazy, but she was not. She was acting the way any normal person would act when a loved
one dies. Many people did not like Izzie after that scene because of the way that she acted when her
patient died. Another example of a dramatic moment is when Meredith s husband, Derek, got into a
car crash and died. This was the turning point for the whole show because Derek was another main
character. The morning of his death date he stopped on his way to work and helped some people who
were in a car accident. He called the ambulance, and they got it taken care of.

The Hague Visby Rules Regulations
The Hague Visby Rules were adapted after the Brussels Amendments of 1968 (officially the Protocol
to Amend the International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules of Law Relating to Bills
of Lading ) originally from The International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules of Law
relating to Bills of Lading 1924 (Hague Rules) . International Convention for the Unification of
Certain Rules of Law relating to Bills of Lading 1968 comes out from the model of The Harter Act

these rules in theirs common law as well; such as Australia, USA and Great Britain and further over 80

The Rights Of Gays And The Homosexual Agenda
In March of 2009, at the Hotel Triangle in Kampala, Uganda, Scott Lively, an American attorney and
activist and the president of Abiding Truth Ministries, a conservative Christian organization, delivered
a speech that was to have a drastic effect on the human rights of gays and lesbians in Uganda. The
speech, given at an anti gay conference titled Exposing the Truth behind Homosexuality and the
Homosexual Agenda , linked homosexuality with child molestation and the destruction of African
families and laid the foundation for what was to become a virulently homophobic movement in
Uganda. This religious crusade against the rights of gays and lesbians culminated in an oppressive
law, passed in 2014 and recently struck down on a technicality by a Ugandan court that, in its original
form, made homosexual acts punishable by death. This paper examines the roots and language of the
law and the connection between its passage and American evangelical efforts in Uganda, as well as the
distorting influence of Scott Lively and a lawsuit brought against him for human rights violations.
Lively is an attorney, activist, and candidate for the 2014 Massachusetts governorship, as well as a
published author (most notably of The Pink Swastika, a thoroughly discredited history that argues that
homosexuality was the root cause of the Holocaust). He is the pastor and president of Abiding Truth
Ministries, a church based in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a former director of the

Who Is Don Quixote Foil
In the story Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra it talks about a man named Don Quixote,
who is a fifty year old that lets his imagination take over, from the region of La Mancha in Spain.
After reading some books about chivalry, he becomes obsessed with it and decides to revive chivalry
in the world. He wants to bring justice and peace back to the world. He sets off on his first adventure
and returns unsuccessful, so he decides he needs a squire. He persuades Sancho Panza, a poor laborer
to leave his wife and become his squire, as well as join him on his next adventure. Although the
protagonist in the story is Don Quixote, his squire Sancho plays a big part in it as well. Throughout the
story, we will see that Sancho function ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Arguments Against Bioterrorism

In our time, bioterrorism is an upcoming threat that is lurking behind the scenes. Even though we are
not aware of the dangers and consequences of bioterrorism, the effects of it in the future could be
lethal. The anthrax attacks are a perfect example of this. According to the article Anthrax attack on the
Capitol, The innocent opening of a letter, a routine task that is done millions of times every day in
offices across the country, suddenly escalated into a public health crisis that truly frightened many
people who work on the Hill, (Frist). This shows our lack of preparation in terms of working against

Museum Reflection
Throughout this course, I have reaffirmed my desire to engage others in the process of learning. I have
always been fascinated by the potential museums possess to involve visitors in inquiry and even
cultivate a love for learning. Accordingly, my goal has always been to bring my passion for learning to
museum visitors. Due to my background in archaeology, I have always given the bulk of my attention
to objects within museums, giving little thought to my own experience let alone the experiences of
others. Museums Today: Missions and Function, however, has taught me to emphasize the museum
audience and the experience of visiting rather than the collection itself. The concept of being audience
focused rather than collections driven, is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to remember that not all learning occurs by reading labels or taking tours. Learning
about oneself or connecting to an object through quiet contemplation is just as valuable for learners
and still, fosters a relationship with acquiring knowledge. Allowing a visitor to choose how they
acquire knowledge in a way that best fits their needs is vital to creating a positive outlook regarding
the process of learning.
Another way that one can cultivate a love of learning in the museum is through engaging exhibitions.
The methodical approach that the Monterey Bay Aquarium takes in designing its exhibitions
exemplifies how to create engaging programming. The aquarium focuses on its mission, the message
of the exhibit, and the type of visitor they want to attract before they begin to plan the exhibit itself.
By using this method, the exhibition is guided by its message rather than by design. Of course, an
exhibition in which the meaning is readily apparent is more engaging than one that is aesthetically
pleasing but has an unclear message. Understanding the message gives the visitor the opportunity to
continue thinking about the collection long after they have left the museum. For this reason, there are
more avenues for learning as well. This kind planning shifts the focus to the audience and how they
interact with the collection rather than the collection itself, which is

Trapped In The Chosen
In society today people can feel trapped by many different things like expectations and rules. In the
book the chosen, by Chium Potok Danny feels trapped by his strict religious rules and traditions and
by the expectations of his father and his father s congregation. Reuven uses an analogy in the story
about a spider and a fly. The fly is trapped in the web of the spider and can t get out. When Rueven
sees this he thinks of Danny. Feeling trapped is a very normal feeling for people today because of the
way society works. The perfect image is something that can come up a lot when one thinks about
being trapped. The world today has expectations of how one should look, dress, carry themselves, and
feel. These perfect ideals that society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Religion can be a very helpful think in ones life until it becomes a burden because a person has
disconnected from what really matters and is focused on perfectly following everything according to
traditions and rules. In the chosen, that is one thing that did trap Danny because he never found beauty
in his faith. Danny and his father are having a conflict about faith a because Danny is next in line to
become the tsaddik but that s not what Danny wants for his life. One thing that puts a lot of burden on
people is expectations from parents and the fact that one feels a strong need to live up to them. When a
parent puts expectations on their child instead of a different adult the weight of those expectaions
becomes ten times bigger and those children begin to feel trapped. It is hard for a child to stand up to
thei parents inthese situations so the feelings of being trapped become greater. Sometimes that person
just needs someone to give them that push they need to get away from the feeling of being trapped.
Rueven was that person for Danny. In the story, when Rueven sees the spider web and te fly, he begins
to feel sorry for the struggleing fly so he blows on it to try to set it free so it could fly away. Danny
only need that extra push so he could truly become who he was meant to

Veneers On Teeth Research Paper
The teenage years are tough, even for the most self confident of children. School grades, popularity,
and appearance are all pressure issues for your teen right now. One area of their life where a dentist
can be of assistance is appearance. Braces can be used to straighten teeth and whitening systems can
be used for yellow teeth. But, what do you use for chipped or uneven teeth? Porcelain veneers are an
option to correct the way your teen s teeth look, but they are not the solution for everyone. Before
your child heads down the road of veneers, it is wise to know whether these are going to make your
adolescent smile again.

Some people only grind their teeth when they are asleep. The problem with putting veneers onto teeth
that are being regularly ground is that while porcelain veneers are strong, they are not strong enough
to be put under this type of pressure on a daily basis.
If grinding porcelain veneers occurs regularly, the veneers will chip or crack and you will be back at
stage one of damaged teeth. Before proceeding with the implementation of veneers, discuss treatment
options for bruxism with your dentist first. Mouthguards while sleeping and stress management
therapies while awake are two treatment options open to your teenager.
The good news for your teenager is that even if veneers are not an option at this moment in time, there
are other options open to them to make their teeth look wonderful. Crowns and dental bonds are other
choices that may suit their mouth better. Making an appointment with their dentist to discuss cosmetic

Michal Scott being the boss who is very insensitive and says things most people would see as very

office include Kevin who is an out of shape middle aged white man and Dwight who is a very socially
awkward middle aged white man. In season 1 episode 5 titled basketball Michael organizes a
basketball game between the office and warehouse staff. Throughout the shows Michael stereotypes
employees of various races and what sports they should be good at . In the process of picking the
basketball team it was most notably displayed with many statements being made by Michael as to who

Water disinfection means eliminating or inactivate of growth and reproduction in pathogenic
microorganisms by creating cell wall corrosion in the cells of microorganisms, or changes in cell
permeability. From the water treatment process, disinfection is a sufficient and the crucial process in
order to inactivate bacteria, viruses and pathogenic organisms that can waterborne diseases to
downstream users and the environment (USEPA, 1999). There are three most common methods of
disinfection in the U.S., which are Chlorination, Ozonation, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.
Chlorine, the most widely used disinfectant for municipal wastewater, destroys target organisms by
oxidation of cellular material. Ozone is a strong oxidizing agent that is an unstable gas that is
generated by an electrical discharge through dry air or pure oxygen. Finally UV radiation generated by
sunlight, tanning lamp, black lights, and electrical discharge through mercury vapor, penetrates the
genetic material of microorganisms and retards their ability to reproduce (USEPA, N.D.). One of the
popular disinfection methods in water treatment is the Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection. The ultraviolet
(UV) disinfection is a physical disinfection of water. This paper would provide a broadly definition of
UV disinfection and its purpose in water treatment. Also, this paper will provide the advantages and
disadvantages of using the advance technology over the common technology in water treatment.

Joseph Conrad Sexism
Racism is incredibly evident to readers in Joseph Conrad s famous novel, Heart of Darkness. Readers
are able to easily identify the repulsive treatment of African Americans through protagonist character
Marlow s eyes. Many are repelled by the incredibly grotesque description of the native Africans as
savages . However, the underlying theme of sexism is often overlooked in Conrad s writing. He uses
his characters to express his own opinions on a woman s place in society or lack thereof. Though this
book was written over 100 years ago, it is incredibly ironic how relevant this trend is to day. Present
day America pushes so hard to distance itself from racial prejudices whereas prejudices against
women are not only frequently recurring in society, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Contrary to many beliefs, feminists don t want to walk around shirtless. We don t hate men. We don t
want to be treated like men. We have nothing against women who wear dresses and are stay at home
moms. We also have nothing against women who put their careers first and don t want to start a
family. Feminism is the radical notion that women are people, and can be whatever they want to be.
Theodore Roosevelt once said stating a problem without a solution is just whining! , and that s not
what I want to do here. So I am going to suggest a simple solution that if taken to heart, could affect
all of mankind. Ready? Let women be whatever the hell they want to be...and respect them for it!
Because a woman who stays at home and raises a family is not a lazy gold digger. Being a mother is
one of the toughest jobs in the world, and not one to be undermined. But on the other hand, a woman
who chooses not to have children and to focus on her career is not self centered. She is just as smart
and driven as any man doing the exact same thing. It s essential that as a society we move past the

Superintendents Selection Process
After they whittle down the unexpectedly large field of applicants for superintendent of schools, the
Pickens County Board of Education will interview the first round of candidates April 6th 8th.
According to a press release from the school system, the search is progressing on schedule and the
board has reviewed all applications and has identified applicants for their first round of interviews.
Currently, Dr. Charles Webb is serving as interim superintendent for the system. He was hired on a six
month contract after Dr. Lula Mae Perry resigned. While they want to make it clear that no applicant
has been eliminated at this point, the board has identified eight candidates who will be interviewed
over the three day period during spring break. After interviewing these applicants, the board plans to
conduct initial interviews with at least one or two more applicants. They will then consider calling in
more applicants for first interviews and will likely call back some applicants to gather more detailed
information, according to the press release. The lead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

responded. The board used this information to identify the first group of applicants to interview. In a

Censorship Of The Innocent By Dr Frederick Wertham
In the 1950 s, censorship was a major part of media coming out of World War II, and into the Cold
War era , America was scared of communism. Everything was censored from radio and television to
books and comics. Comic books had the biggest attack by Dr Frederick Wertham, a German American
psychiatrist in his book Seduction of The Innocent published in 1954. He used fear to convince the
public that comics increased teen delinquency. He argued so well that congress stepped in and had a
subcommittee investigate the effects of comic books on delinquency. His actions lead the industry to
becoming nearly extinct. Being pressed in a difficult situation the comic industry evolved, self
regulated, regained popularity, and even created social movements for positive reform. His research
was fabricated to make it more appealing to the fear of American society, and gain government trust
using the terms communism and delinquency in his reports, books, lectures, and testimonies.
Dr Wertham s word was respected in the psychological community. Unlike Senator McCarthy whose
communist crusade was taking place at the same time, Wertham had research and experience backing
his statements. His career in the U.S. started in 1922 when he was offered a position at the psychiatric
clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He accepted the offer and became a US citizen five years later.
Being in the field for 10 years, he was offered another position in New York to be the senior
psychiatrist at The

Tuck Everlasting Essay
Tuck Everlasting is a great book!
According to The Hornbook, Tuck Everlasting is Flawless in both style and structure. Although some
people may think that the book is very cut to the point, especially with the fact that there are few
characters, it has a great amount of detail, it s very organized, and the structure of the book itself is
amazing. This book is definitely worth reading, and one reason is that there is a limited amount of
characters. Some books, like the Lord of the Rings series, have too many characters, and that makes
the book hard to follow, which makes the book uninteresting. There are only about nine characters in
this book, including the minor ones, and they are built up just enough so that they can be thought of ...

They are all providing a terrific image of the scenes, and there are so many words describing the trees,
flowers, and lots of other things in the forest. There are also several forms of figurative language like
similes, metaphors, and lots of personification. On page 3, the text states, The first week of August
hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel
when it pauses in its turning. On page 5 it states, It wandered along in curves and easy angles, swayed
off and up in a pleasant tangent to the top of a small hill, ambled down again between fringes of bee
hung clover, and then cut sidewise across a meadow. Both of these passages provide, in great detail, a
mental picture of what the book looks like. The final reason that people should read this book is
because of the way the author writes the novel. Ms. Babbit, the author, makes you feel like the
characters are right next to you. She makes them feel like they are right when they are wrong. For
example, when Mae Tuck kills the man in the Yellow Suit, you feel she is in the right like she s done
absolutely nothing wrong. And the same thing happens when the Tucks kidnap Winnie Foster, it just
seems meant to be. The style of Tuck Everlasting is amazing, the descriptiveness is beautiful, and the
simplicity is.... simple! More people should definitely read Tuck

Persuasive Essay On Sleep Deprivation
Introduction: Sleep is as essential to the human body as food and water, but sometimes sleep quality
and quantity is inadequate and this is known as sleep deprivation (SD). Sleep deprived people are
sleepy and fatigued making them prone to accidents, impairing their judgement and they are more
likely to make mistakes and bad decisions. Not sleeping for 24 hours reduces hand to eye
coordination, which can be compared to having a blood alcohol content of 0.1 and contributes to road
accidents and work injuries. A child s school performance is negatively affected by the lack of sleep
and may cause emotional problems such as depression. Sleep deprived adults suffer from lack
concentration, irritability, sleep inertia and a grogginess that lasts ... Show more content on

Poor sleep hygiene some people s habits are disruptive; for example, drinking coffee or smoking
cigarettes close to bedtime stimulates the nervous system and makes sleep less likely. Another
common problem is lying in bed and worrying, rather than relaxing. Babies, older babies and toddlers
parents almost always experience SD because their young children wake frequently in the night for
feeding or comfort. [1] Psychological Effects: 1. a. Depression This investigation builds upon past
findings by evaluating sleep problems as cross sectional and longitudinal predictors of interviewer
assessed suicidal ideation and attempts, in direct comparison with depression, hopelessness, PTSD
diagnosis, anxiety, drug and alcohol abuse, in a military sample. The present study revealed that
insomnia symptoms served as a unique predictor of suicidal ideation assessed cross sectionally, and
for suicidal ideation and suicide attempt longitudinally (though the latter only held when controlling
for only depression, hopelessness and baseline suicidal ideation, which are still strong predictors of
death by suicide). This is a stringent test, given that depression is among the strongest predictors of
suicide risk, and considering that insomnia and suicidality are symptoms of depression and highly
associated with PTSD. [5] Although insomnia and nightmares were significantly associated with
depressive and suicidal symptoms, after controlling for additional

The Reasons In Reginald Rose s Twelve Angry Men
Imagine this, you re being taken to jail for a crime you supposedly did, although you actually had
nothing to do with it. The next day you have a trial, but The jurors that are there care less of who you
are. The trial goes up to three days, finally the jurors discuss the case and come up to a decision,
however it isn t what you had expected. You re accused guilty for a crime you didn t commit and now
you have to deal with the consequences, what perhaps could have gone wrong in this case? Could it
have been that someone set you up, then again could it have been that the jurors in the trial just rushed
since they didn t actually care from the start? Twelve Angry Men , a play about a trial in which a
teenager is being accused guilty in the murder of his own father while his case is being reviewed by
the jurors. Throughout the play Reginald Rose, the author, shows us that not every trial that is held is
actually always a fair trial. This play that was written is a good example of a trial being treated unfair
by the jurors, although at the end the case was fairly brought to a decision. In this play most of the
men are being unfair and vote guilty towards the kid, but one stands up for him and fights the case, the
author does a great job in showing that cases are not always fair by describing each juror. Throughout
the play there are good details that show the unfairness of most of the jurors and how they rushed most
of the time and just tried to get over it. As

Climbing Mount Everest is more technical than grabbing a big coat and some rope and trudging to the
top. There are weeks of training before hand to acclimate to the absurd altitudes. There is a base camp
and then 4 camps along the route to the top. Each camp allows the climbers to acclimate and allow
themselves to rest. Even then, at such high altitudes, acclimating may only help so much. High levels
of altitude can have effects on a person s body that can range from what would seem like a cold, to
death. Altitude has numerous effects on the body that can cause not only severe harm, but death.
Altitude sickness is very common in climbing Mount Everest. The higher altitude you are, and the

Comparison of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Essay
Comparison of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare s play Romeo and Juliet was
made into a film by two different directors. Baz Luhrmann s to Franco Zeffirelli s interpretation of
Romeo and Juliet were very distinct and they both appeal to different age group audiences. Franco
Zeffirelli s version was the first film of Romeo and Juliet. It was produced in 1968 and it was quiet
typical, exactly what the audience would have expected the film of Romeo and Juliet to be. Unlike
Baz Luhrmann s version, which was very modern and appealed to a younger audience. Baz Luhrmann

The lighting of the scenes were similar, as both films portrayed the scene as lively and exciting at the
beginning. The only difference to the lighting is what was used to create the light. Franco Zeffirelli
used traditional items such as candles and torches. Baz Luhrmann used modern items such as
chandeliers and fireworks. The start of the party was similar in both films. Even though Franco
Zeffirelli s version of the scene started noisily, Baz Luhrmann s was noisier. Another similarity were
the camera angle shots. Both directors used a variety of camera shots, especially close up. Luhrmann s
production, the close ups were helping build tension by showing both families feelings and facial
expressions. Throughout the masked ball scene, there are a number of close ups on key characters. For
example, when Tybalt recognises Romeo at the party and when Romeo and Juliet first set eyes on each
other across the fish tank. Franco also uses close ups at these points of the scene. The setting of the
two films are also very contrasting. Zeffirelli s production was set in Tuscany and Umbria because
they were very authentic cities, which were a lot like the setting of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet,
would have been. However, the Luhrmann version of Romeo and Juliet was set in Mexico, Miami
beach. This was

Iran Contra: Crossing That Line I think everyone knew we were walking a very thin line. (Owen) Not
many Americans know the truth that lies behind the Iran Contra scandals. Most would be surprised to

conscience of the people who organized it, aided it, and went through with it. It started with good

Synoptical Essay On The Gospel Of John
John s Gospel, unlike the Synoptic Gospels focuses more on eye witness events of Jesus life. John s
passage about Jesus washing his disciples feet is one of the many passages where Jesus teaches his
disciples through demonstration what it truly means to be a disciple. Jesus knows that he is the son of
God, and despite that knowledge, he still gets down on his knees to wash his disciples feet. This
passage shows his profound love for all of his disciples. John s audience at this time was all of the
Christians living between 100 110 CE.

better understanding of who wrote this text can be achieved. Modern scholars believe that this gospel

It also included two well known ceremonies, the Water Ceremony and Light Ceremony found in
chapters seven and eight, along with the sacrifices of lambs in the Temple during the Passover. In the
Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, most of events take place in Galilee, whereas in the
Gospel of John more events take place in Jerusalem and Judea. These customs and locations of events
suggest that the audience this Gospel was written for were people who believe in Judaism.4 Despite
these conclusions, some may argue that the Gospel of John was written more for Gentiles since this
Gospel portrays Jews in a more hostile lightning as seen when they reject Jesus.5 For many years,
people have tried to approximate which year the Gospel of John was finished. Many scholars believed
that it was written sometime between 140 170 CE, and many would also agree that John was the last
written of the four Gospels. It is very hard to set a date for this Gospel because of how the theological
nature has developed. However, most scholars believe now that it was

  • 2. Palo Alto Teenager For a Palo Alto teenager, it may seem contradictory when I say I don t like spending my parents money. Although I live in one of the wealthiest suburbs, some part of me just feels unworthy of spending my parents hard earned money. I suppose it s because when my parents immigrated here from China, they had to leave behind a secure and financially stable life back in China and start anew in the United States with hardly anything. All the hard work they ve done since then to get to where they are now are the fruits of their own labor over the years, not mine. As such, I feel undeserving of picking the fruits from a tree I didn t help grow. I ll admit, there are times when I feel my self imposed restrictions only serve to disadvantage me compared ... • 3. Shirley Temple Essay Pecola s quest for blue eyes is a direct representation for her search for comfort and love. Pecola is fascinated by Shirley Temple. The narrator, Claudia MacTeer, talks about Pecola saying We knew she was fond of the Shirley Temple cup and took every opportunity to drink milk out of it just to handle and see sweet Shirley s face (Morrison, 1970, p.23). This is when it becomes evident to the reader that Pecola is obsessed with Shirley Temple. To Pecola, Shirley Temple is the perfect girl and she wants to be like her. She believes blue eyes would allow her to be more like Shirley Temple, which would make people love her just like people love Shirley Temple. Pecola is obsessed with the young star, Shirley Temple, because Shirley Temple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 1940s, movies were the many source of entertainment for people. Movies were exclusively for rich, white people. The movies served as entertainment for rich people, poor people, black people, and white people. With this being said, it is obvious Hollywood had enormous power over people s idea of beauty. At this time in history, Hollywood s idea of beauty corresponds with the idea of beauty portrayed by white society. Even Pecola s mother, Pauline Breedlove, at one point in her life is obsessed with movies and white actresses. Her obsession with the movies occurs before she had children. While Cholly is at work, she constantly goes to the movies. She day dreams about white movie stars, because at the time African Americans did not have leading roles. Pauline has a fixation on the actress, Jean Harlow. This obsession is similar to Pecola s obsession with Shirley Temple. Pauline describes a time when she went to see a Jean Harlow movie. She says, I fixed my hair up like I d seen hers in a magazine (Morrison, 1970, p.123). Pauline was born with a limp foot, lost a few of her teeth, and ultimately sees herslef as ugly. She does her hair like Jean Harlow hoping it will make her beautiful. Changing her hair style is not a permanent change, but it allowed her to feel beautiful for a small amount of time. Pauline s desperation for beauty is also inherited by her daughter, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pros And Cons Of African American Vernacular English African American vernacular English has been frowned upon since its very beginning due to the oppressors thinking of it as improper. June Jordan thought the very same thing when she spoke up about it in Nobody Mean More to Me Than You and stated ...white standards of English persis, supreme and unquestioned, in these United States. Despite our multilingual population, and despite the deepening Black white cleavage within that conglomerate, white standards control our official and popular judgements of verbal proficiency and correct, or incorrect, language skills, including speech. That being said, standard English is found to be more appropriate to write a formal letter or article of great importance, than vernacular English because it will reach out to a greater audience and will be interpreted much better. There are pros and cons when it comes to whether or not one should speak in either vernacular or standard English with one of those being the location and environment are two major considerations. Sadly, that is what it has all come down to and it is noted by June Jordan ...as an endangered species... meaning it is rather difficult to find people that speak vernacular English, nowadays, without conforming themselves to the oppressor s ways. Her statement is agreeable in the sense that slaves were brought to the United States not knowing the language and were forced to learn, what they called, the oppressor s language. They might have been stripped of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Alan Greenspan Alan Greenspan Alan Greenspan, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, has always fascinated the financial community. Whatever he says can make or break the markets. He is a highly educated economist with many years of experience. People seek for his advice and obey his judgments. His proclamations are repeated and expounded upon. Greenspan is loved, feared, and never ever questioned. As a result of being a strong chairman of the Fed, he has made a difference the U.S. economy through his way of dealing with inflation. Also, the presidency no longer counterbalances or even criticizes the Fed. First of all, we will consider his background. Alan Greenspan was born on March 6, 1926, in New York City. He received a B.S. in economics in 1948, an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... economy. Economist Allen Sinai said, The Greenspan Fed is the all time champion in American history (Church par. 1). In 1996 and 1997 he didn t do much of anything to the interest rates. From February 1996 to December 1997, the Fed made only one change in interest rates: a quarter point increase in March of 1997. He resisted pressure from inside and outside the Fed to slow down the economy. Instead of being overly concerned about inflation, he seemed to have accepted the idea that deep changes in the economy have made sustained growth possible without pushing prices up. (Church par. 2) Because of Alan Greenspan, the Fed has learned to be more patient. It allows the economy to grow faster than expected without putting on the brakes by raising interest rates. However, Greenspan always stays on guard. He is a renowned numbers cruncher who keeps tabs on the most obscure corners of the economy. Robin Leight Pemberton said that he was likely to back up his predictions by citing such obscure data as vacuum cleaner sales in Iowa (Church Par 3). Greenspan is reaping the praise of the financial community. There is a widely held sense that he has masterminded the nation s prosperity. As many people are becoming stockholders, they regard him as a living ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Drake Equation Research Paper The Drake Equation is used to estimate of the rate at which stars are born in the galaxy, the fraction of stars with planets, and the fraction of those planets on which life could originate, and so on. Although, by those calculations, there should be about 10,000 civilizations in our galaxy capable of interstellar communication. So, where are all the aliens? Extraterrestrial intelligence must exist somewhere in the universe, but we might not be able to communicate with each other because of complications such as different forms of communication, huge distances between each other, and/or they don t want to talk back. In today s society, programs backed by private sources of funding (nonprofit), such as SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s reasonable to assume that how we re trying to communicate with possible extraterrestrial intelligence may not be how they communicate, resulting in us believing no one is listening. It is possible that our means of communication are primitive in comparison, and that our logic may be vastly different than theirs. For example, if you were to send morse code in the hopes of someone responding, it s mostly that no one is going to respond, let alone even notice it. Secondly, we may have not been looking in the right places either. A prime reason for this is that we really don t know where to look in the first place. We have ideas, but nothing concrete whatsoever. Another reason may just be that we haven t had enough time yet, as we can only send messages so quickly, in so many different directions to cover a possible infinite space across the ... The aspect of this study is as followed: Hypoglycemia has been a common clinical condition known to affect human development. Little has been done to define the resultant brain biochemical alterations. A controlled study of hypoglycemia in the newborn human infant is impossible, the infant rat was chosen as a model. During this experiment hypoglycemia was induced once daily for 18 days following birth resulted in generalized diminution of brain weight, cellularity, and protein content. The rate of formation of the myelin lipid sulfatide was decreased, as was the quantity of cerebroside sulfatied in brains of hypoglycemic animals. Phospholipids, gangliosides, and cholesterol were decreased only in proportion to the decrease in the brain weight. Brain glucose and glycogen concentrations were low in the brains of hypoglycemic animals, although ATP and phosphocreatine levels were not decreased. Grey s Anatomy is a show that first premiered on March 27, 2005. The script was written, produced, and even created by Shonda Rhimes. Some people consider Shonda to be evil based on the plot of the show, and I do too. On the other hand, she did create a show that many people enjoy to watch including me. I am still an active watcher even after 14 seasons of this show. Even though I like the show so much, I found areas in the show to critique that include the plot and the actors. The first area to critique is the plot. The first seasons of Grey s Anatomy revolves around five new surgical interns of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are all trying to reach the goal of becoming a surgical resident in the hospital, which is the highest position in the surgical field other than the Chief of Surgery. During their climb to the top, they all experience dramatic moments during the show. For example, Izzie falls in love with a patient at Seattle Grace and breaks a lot of rules to save his life. This ended Izzie s internship and the patient ended up dying. During these scenes, Izzie was acting crazy, and she was devastated when the patient died. The way that Izzie was portrayed was not fair and mean. Shonda made her look like she was actually crazy, but she was not. She was acting the way any normal person would act when a loved one dies. Many people did not like Izzie after that scene because of the way that she acted when her patient died. Another example of a dramatic moment is when Meredith s husband, Derek, got into a car crash and died. This was the turning point for the whole show because Derek was another main character. The morning of his death date he stopped on his way to work and helped some people who were in a car accident. He called the ambulance, and they got it taken care of. ... The Rights Of Gays And The Homosexual Agenda In March of 2009, at the Hotel Triangle in Kampala, Uganda, Scott Lively, an American attorney and activist and the president of Abiding Truth Ministries, a conservative Christian organization, delivered a speech that was to have a drastic effect on the human rights of gays and lesbians in Uganda. The speech, given at an anti gay conference titled Exposing the Truth behind Homosexuality and the Homosexual Agenda , linked homosexuality with child molestation and the destruction of African families and laid the foundation for what was to become a virulently homophobic movement in Uganda. This religious crusade against the rights of gays and lesbians culminated in an oppressive law, passed in 2014 and recently struck down on a technicality by a Ugandan court that, in its original form, made homosexual acts punishable by death. This paper examines the roots and language of the law and the connection between its passage and American evangelical efforts in Uganda, as well as the distorting influence of Scott Lively and a lawsuit brought against him for human rights violations. Lively is an attorney, activist, and candidate for the 2014 Massachusetts governorship, as well as a published author (most notably of The Pink Swastika, a thoroughly discredited history that argues that homosexuality was the root cause of the Holocaust). I have always been fascinated by the potential museums possess to involve visitors in inquiry and even cultivate a love for learning. Due to my background in archaeology, I have always given the bulk of my attention to objects within museums, giving little thought to my own experience let alone the experiences of others. It is important to remember that not all learning occurs by reading labels or taking tours. Learning about oneself or connecting to an object through quiet contemplation is just as valuable for learners and still, fosters a relationship with acquiring knowledge. Allowing a visitor to choose how they acquire knowledge in a way that best fits their needs is vital to creating a positive outlook regarding the process of learning. Another way that one can cultivate a love of learning in the museum is through engaging exhibitions. The methodical approach that the Monterey Bay Aquarium takes in designing its exhibitions exemplifies how to create engaging programming. The aquarium focuses on its mission, the message of the exhibit, and the type of visitor they want to attract before they begin to plan the exhibit itself. By using this method, the exhibition is guided by its message rather than by design. Of course, an exhibition in which the meaning is readily apparent is more engaging than one that is aesthetically pleasing but has an unclear message. Understanding the message gives the visitor the opportunity to continue thinking about the collection long after they have left the museum. For this reason, there are more avenues for learning as well. This kind planning shifts the focus to the audience and how they interact with the collection rather than the collection itself, which is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Readers are able to easily identify the repulsive treatment of African Americans through protagonist character Marlow s eyes. He uses his characters to express his own opinions on a woman s place in society or lack thereof. We have nothing against women who wear dresses and are stay at home moms. We also have nothing against women who put their careers first and don t want to start a family. Feminism is the radical notion that women are people, and can be whatever they want to be. Theodore Roosevelt once said stating a problem without a solution is just whining! , and that s not what I want to do here. So I am going to suggest a simple solution that if taken to heart, could affect all of mankind. Ready? Let women be whatever the hell they want to be...and respect them for it! Because a woman who stays at home and raises a family is not a lazy gold digger. Being a mother is one of the toughest jobs in the world, and not one to be undermined. But on the other hand, a woman who chooses not to have children and to focus on her career is not self centered. She is just as smart and driven as any man doing the exact same thing. It s essential that as a society we move past the sexist mindset that we see in Heart of Darkness. We re not stuck in the Victorian Era. Everything was censored from radio and television to books and comics. Comic books had the biggest attack by Dr Frederick Wertham, a German American psychiatrist in his book Seduction of The Innocent published in 1954. He used fear to convince the public that comics increased teen delinquency. He argued so well that congress stepped in and had a subcommittee investigate the effects of comic books on delinquency. His actions lead the industry to becoming nearly extinct. Being pressed in a difficult situation the comic industry evolved, self regulated, regained popularity, and even created social movements for positive reform. His research was fabricated to make it more appealing to the fear of American society, and gain government trust using the terms communism and delinquency in his reports, books, lectures, and testimonies. Dr Wertham s word was respected in the psychological community. Unlike Senator McCarthy whose communist crusade was taking place at the same time, Wertham had research and experience backing his statements. His career in the U.S. started in 1922 when he was offered a position at the psychiatric clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He accepted the offer and became a US citizen five years later.
