2. I put some items into water and
observed what happened.......
Item Prediction Actual result
tennis ball sink float
paper clip float sink
rubber sink sink
paint brush float float
crayon sink sink
sponge sink float
3. So far this is what i
think ........
light things float and
heavy things sink
4. I carried out an experiment to try to find out more about
why things float and sink. I tested some pieces of wood. I
thought the big piece of wood would sink because it looked
heavy, but it didn’t, it floated.
wood
It floated because it is less dense
than the water.
5. Now I know that density
affects floating and sinking.
Things which are less dense
than water float and those
which are more dense than
water sink.
6. We investigated what happens when
you put a balloon into water.
The balloon is floating on the I pushed the balloon down into Some of the water is pushed
water. the water. out of the way by the balloon,
some water is displaced.
water
level TT
• When you put a balloon into water it
pushes some of the water out of its way,
this is called displacement.
7. We can make something that
sinks float. We used egg whites
to test this idea. Here is what
happened.
1. The egg white sank to the bottom 2. We whisked the egg white before we
when we put it into the water. put it into the water this time.
This is what happened next........
8. The egg white floated on top of the water.
The egg white floated because it was less dense than
the water. Whisking the egg white decreased its
density by allowing air bubbles into it.
