Floating and Sinking
I put some items into water and observed what
                   happened.

     Item Prediction Actual Result
  tennis ball sink float
  paper clip float sink
   rubber sink sink
 paint brush float float
   crayon sink sink
   sponge sink float
So far this is what I
        think ......
..... Light things float
and heavy things
sink .
I carried out a experiment to try to find out more about why things
float and sink. I tested out some pieces of wood. I thought the big
piece of wood would sink because I looked heavy, but it didn’t, it
                               floated.

                                                      wood
Now I know that density effects floating and
sinking. Things which are less dense than
water float and those which are more dense
than water sink.
We investigated when you put a balloon into water

The balloon is I pushed the When we push the
floating on the balloon down into balloon down some of
             water. the water.
the balloon is floating on the water the water is displaced.

When you put a balloon into water it pushes some of
the water out of its way, this is call displacement.
We can make something that sinks float. We
used egg whites to test this idea. Here is
    what happened.

  1. The egg
white sank to 2. We whisked the
 the bottom egg white before
when we put we put it into the
it into the water this time.
     water.
