Social Media is the future of communication, a
countless array of internet based tools and
platforms that increase and enhance the
sharing of information [1]

At present, just under half of the world’s population
has internet access. This amounts to over three billion
people. There are, meanwhile, over two billion active
social media users globally. In other words, 2/3 of the
people online use social media. This tells you how
pervasive social media has become [2]

Social media also take
up a lot of time, and
internet users are
happy to get struck in.
This lead to the use of
platform such as
Facebook and Twitter
becoming, forming
habits that influence
their lives, both and
offline. [3]

" The youth of the world is often the most ready to adapt to and learn to use new
technologies, and they are certainly at the forefront of social media of all types. They
have more technological know-how than many of older generations as well. Social
media, therefore, is certainly having a rather large impact on their daily lives for good
and for bad." [4]

Education
using social media gives students the
opportunity to improve their learning,
since they
have the chance to share knowledge
with one another and conduct group
projects more efficiently (O’Keeffe and
Clarke-Pearson, 2011) [5]

"59% of student users report that they
use social networking to discuss
educational topics and 50% use the sites to
talk about school assignments."[6]

"The digital world has taken its place
alongside school and friends' houses and
extracurriculars as a place where teens go to
make and strengthen "[7]
- Amanda Lenhart
Friendship
57% of teens ages 13 to 17 have met a new friend
online. Social media and online gameplay are
the most common digital venues for meeting
friends [8]

A new study shows that YouTube
actually positively impacts the lives of
young millennials. 62% of Americans

One of the big problems with
social media sites is that the
children often do not fully read
or understand the privacy
settings of their accounts. They
are unaware of the risks of
disclosing unnecessary personal
information. [11]
Identity theft
According to a recent survey, 20% of the youth think it to be
perfectly safe to post their personal information and photos
online. Such kids may easily become victim of the identity
theft. (Unversity of Rome research) [11]

One of the often cited dangers of social media is Cyber-bullying.
It occurs when a person uses sites like Facebook to adopt
a threatening behavior towards someone during a
discussion or sends threatening messages.[11]

"Spending a lot of time on the
social media sites like facebook can
be dangerous, as often as a result
of political events around the world,
explicit and violent imagery get
shown on the discussion threads. "
[11] This lead children to have a
sadistic and defeatist view of the
world.
Children spending too much time
online may consider a virtual
relation substitute for a real one.
By spending more time online they
often ignore the importance and the
appropriate behaviour related to
face-to-face contact. [11]
Lack of interpersonal skills

Even though social media creates a few postive impacts on
youth, it also makes them dangerous and incompetent.
Therefore, it is necessary to exercise caution and control when
dealing with such issues.
