DN18 | The Morphology of the Web is Changing! | Martin Lopatka | MozillaDataconomy Media
Abstract of the Presentation:
The modern web can be a pretty scary place. Web-based ad technologies continue to evolve increasingly sophisticated programmatic models for targeting individuals based on their demographic characteristics and interests. The financial underpinnings of the current system incentivises optimising on engagement above all else. This, in turn, has evolved an insatiable appetite for data among advertisers, aggressively iterating on models to drive human clicks.

Seserv workshop alissa cooper - net neutrality practicesictseserv
In the context of net neutrality debates occuring around the world, a central question concerns the extent to which network operators should be free to manage certain Internet applications differently from others. Some stakeholders advocate for regulatory intervention on the basis that this sort of traffic management gives network operators too much power over which applications succeed or fail, while others argue for reliance on competition between network operators to discipline operator behavior. Yet evidence from the UK and the US suggests that the practical reality of how network operators have gone about managing traffic in the last half decade is not entirely consistent with expectations about the disciplining power of either regulatory or competitive forces in the marketplace. Understanding why Internet traffic ultimately gets managed in a particular way requires a deeper understanding of the interplay between technical, economic, political, and social dynamics confronting network operators.

Keynote: The Future Internet [Dewandre] :: SESERV Workshopictseserv
This document discusses the societal impact of digital technologies and policies. It outlines two lessons learned from sustainable development: integration and diversity, as well as the link between science and policy. The digital transition brings changes to human/technology/nature relationships and challenges of scarcity/abundance and reality/virtuality. Public sectors are expected to balance classic and radical approaches, and foster interoperability between organizations, individuals, policies and scientific disciplines. Collective learning and digital social sciences are needed to understand and sustain smart synthesis regarding these issues.
Seserv workshop costas courcoubetis - introduction to tussle analysis metho...ictseserv
This document discusses a methodology for analyzing conflicts ("tussles") between stakeholders in the socio-economic layer of the internet. It describes a basic socio-economic technology cycle where stakeholders adopt, configure, and use technologies in ways that can lead to unstable outcomes if a tussle result is considered unfair. The methodology involves identifying stakeholder roles and tussles around a functionality, assessing impacts, and considering how choices could spill over and destabilize other functionalities. Design principles are discussed to guide creating protocols that facilitate variation in outcomes and avoid tussle spillovers.
This talk provides a summary of the Tussle Analysis methodology for the economic assessment of Future Internet architectures. The talk was presented at the Future Internet Assembly, Ghent by George StamStamoulis from AUEB.
SLACC is a decision support system that aims to help cloud providers and users negotiate service level agreements (SLAs) by estimating key performance indicators (KPIs) and service level objectives (SLOs). It analyzes historical data and information about a provider's IT infrastructure to evaluate what levels of availability, response time, and other parameters a provider can likely offer or accept. The system is intended to enhance SLA specificity and support negotiation processes without directly interfering with existing cloud architectures.
This document discusses a motivation and problem regarding service level agreements (SLAs) for cloud computing. Specifically, it notes that 57% of European businesses stopped investing in cloud computing until providers can offer more specific guarantees. Additionally, 72% said cloud platforms hampered maintaining service levels, affecting revenue for revenue-generating websites. The problem is that while cloud providers specify SLAs, they do not offer specifications tailored to users' interests or performance parameters beyond service availability.
The document summarizes various European initiatives related to developing a future internet including the Future Internet Assembly (FIA), European Future Internet Initiative (EFII), and relevant topics in the EU's FP7 ICT Call 8 funding program. FIA brings together over 150 research projects to develop a vision and roadmaps. EFII envisions a unified open core internet platform. Relevant topics in FP7 Call 8 include future networks, cloud computing, and future internet research.
The document discusses the Future Internet Assembly (FIA) working group on standardization and pre-standardization. It outlines the working group's action plan to address challenges around standardization gaps, motivate individual contributors beyond single projects, and achieve interoperability. The working group will present standardization activities and roadmaps across several domains including Internet of Things, mobile Internet, testing infrastructure, media/content, trust/security, cloud computing, and services/software.

CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on BlockchainClaudio Di Ciccio
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.
