time with the music but I don’t
think that has been made a priority.

that it helps the audience to know

In this close up shot we see how
the lighting has captured the
water on the windscreen and
made it reflect back. I like this
effect because it shrouds half of
his face and makes the scene
seem more realistic.
In this close up shot we see how
the light is behind the lead singer
and this makes most of his
features shadowed. This means
that the audience can’t see the
expression on his face which really
goes against conventions.
The black and white really gives this
video a vintage feel. I think this
almost fits with the conventions of
rock videos because it has an edge
to it.

2. The effect in the above shot
gives the impression that the
shot was filmed through glass,
like it was being filmed from
inside the car. Almost giving a
match-on-action effect because
of the band being in a car.
Again we see that backlighting was
used. It gives the effect of a
silhouette. Almost giving the
impression that the audience
should focus more on the lyrics at
this point in the video
In this close up shot we see a real
contrast of black and white in the
image. The white almost connotes
innocence.
The camera movement for this shot
was a pan upwards. This was used
when the car looked like it was moving
forward. It also made a good transition
between scenes.
Again, at the end of the video we
see the same mid shot using the
same focusing effect. This gives
continuity to the video showing
how almost it was as if it was a
story that he was retelling.
The last shot is an establishing shot in
colour and we see how the same car we
see earlier in the video is pulling away. On
the screen is the name of the production
company and it’s interesting how they’ve
used a shot as the background to link the
production company more with the
video.

3. The video starts with an
establishing shot. We see
coloured hues in the
background but it feels very
hazy, almost dream-like.
Again we see how the close
up shot of the lead singer is
very hazy but the pop of
colour from her hair stands
out from the mist.
This shot is a close up of the
man holding something. This
implies that the object is of
importance and the audience
should focus on it.
This shot is after the grenade
has exploded, we don’t hear
this, we only hear the non-diegetic
music, which isn’t
usually expected.
Although there is a lose up of
the lead singer in the first
performance shot. Her face is
almost shrouded in mist
making it hard to see her
expressions.
Again, all we see hear is the
non-diegetic music even
though we see the
explosions. The shot has
been slowed down and this
gives the effect of her being
calm.

4. We see that backlighting has
occurred again and we, the
audience, can’t see the lead
singer because the of the high
angle. This gives the
impression that she is
powerful and knows what she
is doing.
Again, we see a vibrant pop
of colour and this stands
out from the grey
background.
In this lose up shot wee see
how the haziness of the
colour is overpowering. The
state of the clothes is really
amplified with the blue
powder paint covering it.
In this shot we see he character
dropping the baton to the
ground. The camera follows
this movement without any
cuts by panning downwards.

5. There is no diegetic sound in
the first shot, it
automatically goes to the
non-diegetic music. This
close up shows how we are
supposed to take notice of
her expression.
The first performance shot
that we come to is a long shot
of the lead singer playing in a
white walled, what could be
studio, alone.
This shot is a mid shot.
However it is heavily
focused on his hands and
our eyes are immediately
drawn to them.
The next shot is a close up of
the medics hand. This gives a
level of continuity throughout
the shots.
This is the first shot where we
see that the performance and
narrative are intertwined.
Also we can see the
difference between the state
of the same costume at
different points of the video.
Here, we see an extreme
close up of the characters
face. However, the camera is
focused on the machine
behind here, signifying its
importance.

6. The video starts off with a
mid shot of this character
running away. The light is
behind him and we can’t
really see the front of him.
This shot is sped up and we can
see how the light is speckled
over him. Maybe this connotes
how he is trapped.
The first performance shot
shows a mid shot with the
entire band in it. The tone
of the image has ore of s
vintage feel.
The jump cuts are extremely
fast paced which matches
the conventions of the genre.
The backlight makes the
band member look like a
silhouette which I like.
This mid shot contains really
low lighting which gives it a
more mysterious feel to the
shot.
This close up shot of the
character shows the
audience who they are
supposed to identify with.
