2. The reason it's good to pay attention to the course objectives is that they tell you what goals for the student are most important to the institutions and teachers that create the class. Therefore, they present obvious clues as to what will be tested, and the priorities by which papers are graded.
This week is a great example. One of the course objectives covered this week is, "given a significant technological advance (such as the printing press or camera), assess the effects of the technical breakthrough on culture and art."
Imagine what people and cultures were like without photography, recorded music, television, film, music videos, or anything electronic whatever. Much of what we take for granted would seem absolutely miraculous to them. Also, the whole nature and use of the human imagination has changed significantly.
You may want to use considerations such as this in responding to this particular discussion question. Or, take it in your own direction.

This is probably the kind of thing that only a Humanities teacher would be interested in, but the history of the development of color media for humanity's creative use is really a quite fascinating one - involving charred wood from ancient fires, naturally occurring vs. manufactured pigments, finishing a painting quickly before plaster dries, and even an essential creative use for eggs. And of course, much more.
Technological advances in the arts are not a recent phenomenon. They have been going on since the beginning:
Writing (ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt)
The tuba and the organ (Classical Rome)
The printing press (the 15th Century - one big reason the Protestant Reformation succeeded after several failed starts in previous centuries)
The modern piano (the 18th Century - a big part of the great emotion of Romantic music, like Beethoven)
Electronics (Think for a moment about how your experience of the arts - music especially - is affected by relatively recent advances in electronics)
There could be a whole course in history studying just such things.

2. The reason it's good to pay attention to the course objectives is that they tell you what goals for the student are most important to the institutions and teachers that create the class. Therefore, they present obvious clues as to what will be tested, and the priorities by which papers are graded.
This week is a great example. One of the course objectives covered this week is, "given a significant technological advance (such as the printing press or camera), assess the effects of the technical breakthrough on culture and art."
Imagine what people and cultures were like without photography, recorded music, television, film, music videos, or anything electronic whatever. Much of what we take for granted would seem absolutely miraculous to them. Also, the whole nature and use of the human imagination has changed significantly.
You may want to use considerations such as this in responding to this particular discussion question. Or, take it in your own direction.

This is probably the kind of thing that only a Humanities teacher would be interested in, but the history of the development of color media for humanity's creative use is really a quite fascinating one - involving charred wood from ancient fires, naturally occurring vs. manufactured pigments, finishing a painting quickly before plaster dries, and even an essential creative use for eggs. And of course, much more.
Technological advances in the arts are not a recent phenomenon. They have been going on since the beginning:
Writing (ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt)
The tuba and the organ (Classical Rome)
The printing press (the 15th Century - one big reason the Protestant Reformation succeeded after several failed starts in previous centuries)
The modern piano (the 18th Century - a big part of the great emotion of Romantic music, like Beethoven)
Electronics (Think for a moment about how your experience of the arts - music especially - is affected by relatively recent advances in electronics)
There could be a whole course in history studying just such things.

FINE ART TASK LIST Summer 2010 Buy a sketchbook Join flickr.com Become part of the wellwellwell group Post all work on flickr and add to the group Go to the Tate Modern and see the Francis Alys exhibition See at least one more exhibition over the summer. Collect information and postcards to document your visits. Present these in your sketchbooks with some description of your reactions to what you have seen. Please choose at least 3 of the following tasks from the sheet and fill your sketchbook. 1 .Psychology Use examples of traits which people have or demonstrate in certain situations document people your family’s pathologies. What do they do when they are nervous, worried, excited or paranoid? Do they leave traces/evidence of their obsessive habits around the house? What if these pathologies became excessive? Think of appropriate ways of documenting their psychological pathologies, it might be as simple as photographing the rooms they have left or collecting the evidence together. 2. Popular Sayings/Phrases English culture is littered with old fashioned sayings that we come to accept as part of our identity. Choose some popular sayings that people you know may say or use quite a lot and consider how you can turn that into an image to communicate the same message. 3. Social Commentary. Artists have always documented life and made comments on it through their own interpretation and view point. Using a documentary method, turn social situations into humorous or provocative ones using your own distinctive style of working. 4. Land Art Making sculptures from your surroundings is as old as time itself. Throughout history people have always resorted to making creations from the objects they find around them. Obviously nowadays we have a wider variety of materials to choose from and this has resulted in a larger selection of works. Using materials surrounding you or in a particular place build an installation which is exclusively made out its environment. 5. Temporary Sculptures Working against the elements is always a challenging way to watch your work develop within its surroundings. Choose a number of spaces which will transform over the course of a day and build a sculpture which will morph/transform as the day progresses i.e. sandcastles, areas which are heavily lit by the sun during the day. Make sure you document the transformations of your work during the day, and present the evidence.
