Most media you encounter each day combines modes—news articles include photographs;

and spatial arrangement; music contains both lyrics and sound. Even an academic paper has
multimodal elements such as font choice, double-spacing, margins, etc. By analyzing multimodal
texts you can become a more active viewer of the media that surrounds us and understand how
media shapes our understanding of the world.
Ultimately, your goal is to recognize and evaluate different modes in order to discover how the
modes work together to create arguments and how they respond to rhetorical situations. Your
thesis should make an argument for how you interpret the ad’s message and whether the ad is
successful or not (i.e. is it persuasive for its intended audience) based on its use of visual and
rhetorical strategies. In other words, you will take a stance about the piece and make an argument
about its messages and rhetorical strategies. In the body of your essay, you will use rhetorical
appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) and concepts from visual design to specifically focus on HOW the
visual rhetoric works, not simply WHAT it conveys: discuss how the use of rhetorical appeals
determines the effectiveness of the visual argument. To complete the essay successfully, you

Inductive Reasoning
Inductive reasoning is similar in that it consists of premises, which lead to a conclusion. The difference is that the conclusion is not guaranteed to be true — we can only state it with some degree of confidence.

How to Identify Logos

Make it Real: Does the writer make the argument real? Is the argument concrete or abstract?
The language plain language: Does the writer use technical jargon or is a portion of language used for a specific reader that isn’t familiar with the reader?
Does the writer use short words and phrases over long and convoluted counterparts?
The language is explicit: Does the writer make his or her argument plain? What techniques does he or she use to establish explicit argument?
The writer uses a couple premises, to establish his or her position? Are they relatable? Do they show relationship between them? “And these five advantages — capital costs, scheduling, inventory control, marketing, and employee satisfaction — together make this a winning proposal.”

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

It was love at first sight.
The first time Yossarian saw the chaplain he fell madly in love with him.
Yossarian was in the hospital with a pain in his liver that fell just short of being
jaundice. The doctors were puzzled by the fact that it wasn’t quite jaundice. If it became
jaundice they could treat it. If it didn’t become jaundice and went away they could discharge
him. But this just being just short of jaundice all the time confused them.
Each morning they came around, three brisk and serious men with efficient mouths
and inefficient eyes, accompanied by brisk and serious Nurse Duckett, one of the ward nurses
who didn’t like Yossarian. They read the chart at the foot of the bed and asked impatiently
about the pain. They seemed irritated when he told them it was exactly the same.
‘Still no movement?’ the full colonel demanded.
The doctors exchanged a look when he shook his head.
‘Give him another pill.’
Nurse Duckett made a note to give Yossarian another pill, and the four of them
moved along to the next bed. None of the nurses like Yossarian.

Read the text below about English in the Eighteenth Century.
By the turn of the 18th Century there was a growing feeling that the Renaissance had created a language
that was out of control. That is, the influx of foreign loan words had created a language in which there
was a superfluous number of words which were similarly defined, that spelling had been arbitrary and
the language was decaying.
Some people like John Wallis in his Grammatica Luingae Anglicanae (Grammar of the English
Language) commented on the need for standardisation because there is ‘great demand for it from
foreigners who want to be able to understand the various important works which are written in our
tongue.’ While others criticised those linguists who had adopted Latin as the model upon which
English might be moulded, arguing that this created ‘useless rules about the cases, genders, and
declensions of nouns’ for example.
Some linguists were even more vehement; Lowth commented that English was rapidly becoming a
‘corrupt’ language. Lowth argued that the models of grammatical construction had been men like
Shakespeare and Milton, all of whom in his opinion ‘offend’.
There is little doubt at the outset of the 18th Century, there was considerable division amongst linguists
about how to effectively regulate and control the language. However, it is clear that the language
needed regulating somehow.
