This document provides two methods for calculating percentages of numbers and examples of word problems involving percentages. Method 1 is to convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply it by the original number. Method 2 is to convert the percentage to a fraction with the percentage over 100 and multiply that by the original number. Several word problems follow that require calculating percentages of original amounts to determine final costs.

4. Word Problems
 1.) My new speakers were $200.00 but I also
had to pay the 5% tax, what did I pay for my
new speakers?
 2.) My shoes were only $60.00 but I also had to
pay the 4% delivery charge. What was my
total?
 3.) The new book was only $20.00 but it was
another 60% if the author signed it. What will
my book cost with an author’s signature?

5. Word Problems
 4.) My new laptop was $850.00 plus the
10% tax. What will it cost me?
 5.) $6.00 chocolate bars are now on sale
for 35% off. What will the chocolate bars
cost now?
