The document discusses the emergence of metamodernism as a new architectural style that has developed in response to the limitations of postmodernism. Postmodernism promoted pluralism and a rejection of modernism's utopian visions, but ultimately led to mediocrity, pastiche, and stagnancy in Philippine architecture. Metamodernism aims to reconstruct architecture through a return to social engagement, new sincerity, and craftsmanship. It encompasses styles like neoromanticism, which creates something new through improvement, and performatism, which intervenes radically in constructed frames. The document argues metamodernism represents a new structure of feeling for the contemporary generation.
This document discusses definitions and perspectives of postmodernism. It explores postmodernism as an economic/social development from modernism, an aesthetic/artistic change within modernism's values, and from the perspective of the history of ideas as two distinct eras. Key philosophers discussed include Lyotard, who viewed postmodernism as skepticism towards grand narratives, and Baudrillard's concept of simulacra and the proliferation of copies. The document also examines postmodernism's relationship to anti-colonial movements and defines several phases of capitalism that postmodernism developed from.
This book examines how spatial distortions and warping emerged in modern culture from the late 19th century onward. It analyzes how anxieties like agoraphobia and claustrophobia came to be seen as conditions of modern life and were incorporated into art and architecture. The book looks at how space became a projection of subjective interpretations linked to psychoanalysis. It also explores how artists and architects experimented with new spatial representations that intersected different media to make sense of space in unconventional ways. The book argues this "spatial warping" is now being reshaped by digital technologies and virtual reality.
Peter Eisenman is an American architect known for his deconstructivist style of architecture. Deconstructivism began in the late 1980s as a development of postmodern architecture focused on fragmentation and manipulating the surface elements of structures. Eisenman seeks to move away from modernist rules like "form follows function" through designs that stimulate unpredictability and controlled chaos. Some of Eisenman's notable projects include the Humana Building, Jubilee Church, Kreuzberg Tower, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. His theoretical work draws from philosophers like Nietzsche and linguists like Chomsky and Derrida.

Unit 5 Experiencing architecture by A.Sivaraman M.ArchSiva Raman
This document discusses how architecture can be experienced through various aspects like mass and cavities, contrasting solids and voids, and as color planes. It provides examples from buildings in Rome, Venice, and France to illustrate these concepts. The key points made are that architecture involves experiencing the spaces created by subtracting mass as well as the solids, and that some buildings are perceived more as two-dimensional color planes rather than masses. Details like ornamentation, materials, and light can transform the experience and perception of a building.
The Inter Relations Between Sculpture and Architecture - El Espacio RaptadoNicholas Socrates
The document discusses the relationship between architecture and sculpture from the 1960s onward. A renewed interest emerged in locating fine arts like sculpture within architectural spaces to establish new concepts in both disciplines. Sculpture began occupying comparable volumes to buildings and took on architectural qualities. By the 1970s, sculpture's role had expanded to altering and transforming space through its interference in the field of architecture. Public art is discussed as art located in open, public spaces for all citizens to experience.
Jean Baudrillard was a French philosopher known for his ideas around simulations and simulacra in a postmodern environment. Some of his most important works that explored these concepts included "Simulacra and Simulations" and "Utopia Deferred." He believed that with advances in media and technology, simulated versions of reality could become indistinguishable from actual reality, resulting in a "hyperreality." Baudrillard used Disneyland as an example of how an imaginary space aims to mask the fact that reality is no longer real through heightened simulations. His work has been influential in understanding the effects of postmodernism and how it can alter perceptions of media and the world.

Umberto Eco's 1962 work "Opera Aperta" introduced the concept of "openness" to suggest that artworks produce aesthetics through "meaning creation". Eco proposed that artists should work through a process of semiotic creation that generates multiple interpretations, allowing every spectator to create their own subjective meaning. This concept positioned the artist and spectator as linked in an unfinished work that the spectator helps complete. Eco's theory established a new understanding of artistic production and spectatorship centered around openness and collaborative meaning making.

Modernism emerged in the late 19th/early 20th centuries as an artistic and cultural movement in response to industrialization, urbanization, and technological/philosophical changes. It emphasized experimentation, abstraction, and subjective experience across literature, art, architecture and more. Modernist works often conveyed themes of alienation, fragmentation and disillusionment in modern society through innovative styles like stream-of-consciousness, collage-like structures, abstract forms, and minimalist/functional designs that rejected traditional conventions. Prominent modernist writers included James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and T.S. Eliot, while Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky and Salvador Dali exemplified modernist art's
The document discusses the difference between shape and form in architecture, with shape being void of information and meaning while form results from a generative process and ideology. It argues that contemporary "shape architecture" focuses too much on superficiality and empty gestures rather than interrogating what architecture is truly about. The conclusion calls for a renewed focus on form over shape to give architecture deeper meaning beyond self-referential content.
Postmodern art emerged in the 20th century in response to modernism. It rejects the fixed views and purity of form in modern art in favor of a more complex and uncertain view of the world. Postmodernism aims to eliminate boundaries between high and popular culture. Some key movements in postmodern art include minimalism, post-minimalism, new classicism, conceptual art, installation art, and lowbrow art. Postmodern works are characterized by their subjective nature, interest in social issues, and eclectic styles and mediums.
Postmodernism is a contemporary art movement associated with post-industrial societies that questions traditional boundaries and concepts of art and creativity. It draws from multiple art traditions and references contemporary culture through methods like irony, parody, appropriation, and quotation. Postmodern art is grounded in theories like Marxism, feminism, and psychoanalysis.
This document provides an introduction to the course "Postmodernism in Art" taught at the University of Edinburgh. It discusses key concepts needed to understand postmodernism such as modernity, modernism, and Clement Greenberg's formalism. It outlines how postmodernism emerged in the 1960s through movements like Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptualism. The document also examines debates around defining postmodernism and discusses how postmodern art questions aspects of modernism like artistic purity and the separation of art from everyday life.
This document discusses different approaches to studying architecture - historical, purposeful, and theorized - and provides examples of notable theorists in related fields. It then focuses on Fredric Jameson's characterization of postmodernism, outlining five key aspects: commodification of aesthetics, depthlessness, reduction in historicity, intensities, and technology. Specific architectural examples are given that demonstrate postmodern characteristics like stylistic pastiche and the inability to cognitively map postmodern spaces. The document concludes by discussing the value of theorization in understanding postmodernism through spatial experiences.
The document discusses the relationship between architecture, media, and perception from the early 20th century to today. It summarizes key ideas from thinkers like Walter Benjamin, Marshall McLuhan, Guy Debord, Jean Baudrillard, Beatriz Colomina, and others on how new media technologies have transformed human perception and the role of images in architecture. Examples of modernist architecture and media from the 1920s-1970s are provided alongside more recent discussions of digital media, the internet, and concepts like the post-internet society.
This document discusses how postmodernism has brought about a new cultural process across various domains like art, architecture, fiction, and theater. Postmodernism celebrates pluralism over modernism's focus on unity and centeredness. It has led to a transition in these domains by rejecting stylistic integrity and purity in art, questioning the modern ideal of architecture expressing absolute unity, juxtaposing real and fictional worlds in postmodern fiction, and replacing modern theater's aesthetics of presence with aesthetics of absence. Overall, postmodernism advocates a universal culture that transcends boundaries rather than diverse cultures defined by communities.
Week 8 Reflections of a Modern World (An Introduction to some key thinkers) DeborahJ
This document provides an introduction to modernism in art through a discussion of key thinkers and historical influences. It summarizes Marxist perspectives on art and alienation, as well as the works of Freud, Jung, Surrealists like Dali and Picasso, and theorists like Benjamin, Adorno, and Panofsky. The document traces how industrialization, urbanization, and new technologies like photography and film reproduction challenged traditional notions of art and inspired new styles and subjects aimed at depicting modern experience. Marxist critics analyzed how art both reflects and shapes social and economic relations, while psychoanalysts influenced Surrealists in their exploration of the unconscious through automatism and dream-like imagery.
The End of Modernity: 1960s art and cultureDeborahJ
Postmodernism emerged in the 1960s as an artistic movement that questioned the principles of modernism, such as formalism and the separation of art from everyday life. It developed in response to broader social changes and critiques of the ideals of progress and objective truth that defined the modern era. Postmodernism rejects the notion of artistic purity and universal values, incorporating popular culture and questioning definitions of art. It is a complex term that is still being defined, with no consensus on its meaning or implications.
Contemporary art features more experimental subject matter and styles compared to traditional art. Subjects are no longer confined to human figures and landscapes, and can include combinations of people, environments, techniques, and concepts. Contemporary art styles have evolved over decades to include movements like abstract expressionism, kinetic art, op art, performance art, environmental art, feminist art, video art, graffiti art, postmodern art, body art, and digital art. In the Philippines, contemporary art is dominated by abstraction, expressionism, social realism, and mixed media works, with some Western influences. Community and environmental arts are also gaining popularity.
Installation art emerged as a central practice in contemporary art in the late 20th century. It is defined not by traditional media but by the message conveyed through various means. Artists create immersive, interactive environments that often involve the viewer directly and blur boundaries between art and participant. New technologies further expand possibilities for installation works, allowing ideas from prior decades to be realized through computer and electronic components that respond to viewers in real time.
This document discusses the concept of metamodernism, which mediates between modernism and postmodernism. It is defined as art that is impermanent, incremental, provisional, site-specific, performative, emotive, perceptual, devious and questioning. The document then discusses British artist David Blandy, who produces video, performances and comics dealing with popular culture and the tension between fantasy and reality. It provides an example of how metamodernism can be constructed by merging a painting with its natural background, differentiated by a human figure standing between them.
This document provides an overview of postmodernism in English literature. It begins by discussing how postmodernism emerged in the mid-1980s as an area of academic study and is difficult to define as it appears across many disciplines. It then compares postmodernism to modernism, noting they both reject boundaries between high and low art forms and emphasize fragmentation. However, postmodernism differs in that it celebrates rather than laments fragmentation. The document also discusses key characteristics of postmodern literature and how it represents a break from 19th century realism similar to modernism but with a greater emphasis on parody and questioning distinctions between genres.
Postmodernism emerged in the late 20th century as a departure from modernism in the arts, characterized by mixing styles and genres, self-referentiality, and skepticism of absolute truths. Postmodern works blur fiction and reality, value subjective taste over objective quality, and mediate reality through interpretation rather than direct experience. Postmodern art uses techniques like appropriation, juxtaposition, and deconstruction to combine high and low cultural forms and subvert conventions. For example, the film Pulp Fiction employs nonlinear storytelling and mixes genres to bring together elements from different eras.
Postmodernism emerged in the late 20th century as a departure from modernism in the arts, characterized by the mixing of different styles and genres, self-referentiality, and skepticism of absolute truths. Postmodern works blur fiction and reality, use appropriation and pastiche, and bring together high and low cultural forms. In film, postmodernism subverts narrative conventions and challenges notions of genre, time, and social divisions through works like Pulp Fiction that combine styles from different eras.
Hans Ibelings is a Dutch art historian and architecture critic. He has written extensively on architectural movements including postmodernism, modernism, deconstructivism, and supermodernism. The document discusses the key principles and influences of each movement. Modernism emphasized simplicity, rejection of ornament, and use of new materials like steel and glass. Postmodernism reacted against modernism with a return to traditional forms and reference to historical styles. Deconstructivism introduced non-rectilinear shapes and fragmentation. Supermodernism refers to a trend toward abstract, neutral architecture reflecting the last phase of modernism. Globalization is discussed as exerting influence on contemporary architecture through increased cross-cultural contact and the image of the global city
This document provides an introduction to postmodernism and related theories in international relations. It begins with definitions of postmodernism and modernism, noting that postmodernism has emerged in various disciplines. It then discusses key aspects of modernism versus postmodernism. The document proceeds to outline some major postmodern thinkers and their ideas, including Foucault, Derrida, Lyotard and Baudrillard. It also discusses post-structuralism and how it critiques and builds upon structuralism. Finally, it briefly defines post-colonialism and the work of Edward Said on orientalism.

Beautiful Girl by Mr. Brainwash is a mixed media artwork on paper done in 2023. It is unique and of course signed by Mr. Brainwash. The picture is a tribute to his own most successful work of art, the Balloon Girl. In this new creation, however, the theme of the little girl is slightly modified.
In Mr. Brainwash’s mixed media artwork titled “Beautiful Girl,” we are presented with a captivating depiction of a little girl adorned in a summer dress, with two playful pigtails framing her face. The artwork exudes a sense of innocence and whimsy, as the girl is shown in a dreamy state, lifting one end of her skirt and looking down as if she were about to dance. Through the use of mixed media, Mr. Brainwash skillfully combines different artistic elements to create a visually striking composition. The vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes bring the artwork to life, evoking a sense of joy and happiness. The attention to detail in the girl’s expression and body language adds depth and character to the piece, allowing viewers to connect with the young protagonist on a personal and emotional level. “Beautiful Girl” is a testament to Mr. Brainwash’s unique artistic style, blending elements of street art, pop art, and contemporary art to create a visually captivating and emotionally resonant artwork.
The use of mixed media in “Beautiful Girl” adds an additional layer of complexity to the artwork. By combining different artistic techniques and materials, such as stencils, spray paint, and collage, Mr. Brainwash creates a dynamic and textured composition that grabs the viewer’s attention. The juxtaposition of different textures and patterns adds depth and visual interest to the piece, while also emphasizing the artist’s eclectic and experimental approach to art-making. The inclusion of collage elements, such as newspaper clippings and torn posters, further enhances the artwork’s urban and contemporary feel. Overall, “Beautiful Girl” is a visually captivating and thought-provoking artwork that showcases Mr. Brainwash’s talent for blending different artistic elements to create a truly unique and engaging piece.

9. Postmodernism
- Age of lost innocence
- Idea of Plenty
- Progress is irrelevant
- History is complex
23. PHILIPPINE POSTMODERNISM
- Pesimissm towards Modernism
- Return to contextuality as opposed to the
impersonality of Modern architecture
- The idea of the end of history as proven by the
fact that architects are taking references from
the past means that everything that can be
thought of has already done, therefore there
can never be new developments and original
works.
- Evokes a sense of nationalism
- Recognition of plurality and individuality instead
of the monotony of Modernism
25. Jim Jarmusch is an American

- Jim Jarmusch
27. Judith Torres is currently the editor-in-
chief of BluPrint and Condo Living

28. “I’ve heard Jarmusch’s assertion echoed
by some designers, particularly when
talking about the state of architecture
and furniture design here in the
Philippines, and lamenting the Filipino’s
penchant – and talent – of copycatting”
- Judith Torres (Optimistic DNA, Editor’s Note – BluPrint Volume 4 2013)

38. Problem Identification:
Due to the effects of the Postmodern cultural trend, the
architecture of the Philippines has stopped its growth and
development, as it has failed to give any deepening
understanding of architectural aesthetics, but rather, a much
more chaotic architectural landscape for the country.

42. Thesis Statement:
The contemporary society can no longer be defined by
Postmodernism, due to the fact that it is no longer the
dominant ideology, therefore there must be a new set of
architectural aesthetic sensibilities that will reflect this new
structure of feeling of the contemporary generation. This new
ideology is called Metamodernism

– Notes on Metamodernism
44. Timotheus and Robin are also currently working on an international
research project documenting trends and tendencies in current affairs

the postmodern but should be conceived of as metamodern. As part of
this project they also co-edit a blog called ‘‘Notes on metamodernism’’
