WordPress – No Code Needed!
It’s known that WordPress is open-source and community-built, but how exactly one can get started contributing can be a bit of a mystery. In fact, many people aren’t aware that one can contribute to WordPress without being a master of code! Documentation, translation, teaching, infrastructure, design, and yes, Core – there are many different ways to contribute to the WordPress.org Project. My presentation will enlighten audience members to the world of open-source contributing and make it easier for them to connect with the Make.WordPress.org community.

Presentation by Mark Palmer. How to implement web accessibility in your organisation. Overview of the potential obstacles and suggestions for overcoming them.
Rocket packs on escalators - stop messing with progressive enhancementChristian Heilmann
One of the never-ending debates of web development surrounds the concept of progressive enhancement vs. graceful degradation. With our increased complexity of technology the excuse “but we build apps” keeps thrown around to make our products dependent on many technology layers. The other side of the argument keeps accusing others of breaking the web. Fact is, progressive enhancement is your friend, and it is not that hard to apply it sensibly. In this talk Chris Heilmann of Microsoft will try to ease our confusion and un-block some loggerhead debates. We build things for people and developer convenience should never trump user experience.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) has suffered an alleged data breach after a notorious threat actor claimed to have exfiltrated data from its systems. Infamous data leaker IntelBroker posted on the even more infamous BreachForums hacking forum, saying that Europol suffered a data breach this month.
The alleged breach affected Europol agencies CCSE, EC3, Europol Platform for Experts, Law Enforcement Forum, and SIRIUS. Infiltration of these entities can disrupt ongoing investigations and compromise sensitive intelligence shared among international law enforcement agencies.
However, this is neither the first nor the last activity of IntekBroker. We have compiled for you what happened in the last few days. Why React Native as a Strategic Advantage for Startup Innovation.pdfayushiqss
Do you know that React Native is being increasingly adopted by startups as well as big companies in the mobile app development industry? Big names like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest have already integrated this robust open-source framework.
In fact, according to a report by Statista, the number of React Native developers has been steadily increasing over the years, reaching an estimated 1.9 million by the end of 2024. This means that the demand for this framework in the job market has been growing making it a valuable skill.
But what makes React Native so popular for mobile application development? It offers excellent cross-platform capabilities among other benefits. This way, with React Native, developers can write code once and run it on both iOS and Android devices thus saving time and resources leading to shorter development cycles hence faster time-to-market for your app.
Let’s take the example of a startup, which wanted to release their app on both iOS and Android at once. Through the use of React Native they managed to create an app and bring it into the market within a very short period. This helped them gain an advantage over their competitors because they had access to a large user base who were able to generate revenue quickly for them.
Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.

3. Find evidence…
Joomla!: out of the game
Joomla! has its spot a few years ago when WordPress was still being short for everything that was more
than a blog. However, considering the actual possibilities of WordPress, now it doesnt even result
serious to even consider Joomla as an alternative.
The mistake of Joomla! was in its conception. Intending to allow that anybody with little technical
knowledge could do almost everything from the control panel and with some mouse clicks. And of
course, this is impossible. This has become a chaotic code, that converts into hell the existance of a
developer that intends to implement a custom design or functionality. Not to mention the constant
and serious security failures (specially in its extensions) or the problems and difficulties that carry
some updates.
Documentation? Doesn't exist, so everything is based in many tests and errors and visits to
populated forums with answers from pseudo-technicians who usually are more lost than the
person who comes searching for help.
In favor of Joomla! we have clients that in its special circumstances make of Joomla! the perfect
solution

5. Weak points?
• Joomla Disadvantages
• Built-in performance pretty sluggish/clunky.
• Horrid built-in URLs.
• Weak weblog section.
• Hard to theme. A Mambo/Joomla site looks like Mambo/Joomla, like it or not.
• Crappy built-in SEO. Leading SEO plugin belongs to a very peculiar developer and is encrypted (have
fun repairing the SEO plugin, we reverse engineered and decrypted it for our site to make our
changes even after paying for it).
• Nasty, nasty core code. Very difficult to fix broken items.
• Fractured community (never healed after Joomla/Mambo split back in 2006).
• Most good plugins are pay.
• Rather mediocre developers. Anyone who likes to code in Joomla/Mambo in 2011 ought to see a
psychiatrist.
• Developer pricing is all over the map as there are many old-school Mambo/Joomla developers still
ought there churning out convoluted future-resistant code quite affordably.
http://foliovision.com/2011/04/drupal-vs-joomla-mambo-vs-wordpress
7. Who is Who
• WordPress has behind the company Automattic,
Joomla has the Open Source Matters Association. Both
base their development in “the community”. They both
base their growth in “the community”. They both use
open licenses and their code is open source. Their both
a good product technically and functionally.
• “The community” of Joomla users denies the
companies as members of the same. The community of
WordPress is proud that each day more companies
support the project. In fact, the capital of more than
300 million US dollars that Automattic has proceeds
from companies like New York Times, Tiger Global
invested or CNET Networks.
9. Lets lose the complexes
Truth 1: Joomla is a product that we can earn
money with.
Truth 2: I want to EARN MONEY with Joomla
Truth 3: Im proud to EARN MONEY with Joomla
All these truths summarize in one:
My benefit must benefit the Joomla project
10. Who is Joomla?
The hosting company The business consultant
The developer The marketing expert
The template developer The analyst
The Joomla administrator The project manager
The salesperson The economist
The businessman The publicist
The designer The SEO
The content creator The final user
15. A step further

19. The Open Source is the enviroment
• Environment Conditions
• Anti-pirate Campaigns
• Forced hardware renovation
• Software security problem
20. Joomla is the door…
• Minimum entry barriers
• Program and Documentation available on the
Internet
• Increasing availability of information in local
languages
• Investment according to the possibilities and
needs of the company
21. …to infinity…
• Various business models available.
• How to enhance the competitive advantages
of firms
• Dormant client portfolio
• Worldwide location
• Human resources available
• Know how within community
22. …and beyond!
• Possibilty of collaboration and cooperation
locally, regionally or internationally.
• Licensing model defined to ensure the
interests of those involved in projects and
initiatives
• TIC Implementation without “customer-
locking” and with more control over the
technologies investment.
23. We must not confuse the end with
the means
Joomla is just the means…
The business is the end!
Editor's Notes
Lets see another example, a company with 20 developers, 2 designers, 3 technicians, 4 content creators, two experts in SEO and 10 salespersons.
Which of the two companies has more possibilities to produce larger benefits?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Imagine that the first solitary businessman is a good developer. He would get together with another entrepreneur whose strength is the marketing side. And both with a third who is good in desgining. But not like a join-ventur, no in a “formal” way, each of them just simply do what they are best at, taking charge only that the Joomla COMMUNITY which they are completely part of, complement those points in which they are weaker . And tomorrow our first friend is working in another project with another marketing company that needs some modifications in an extension already done. And in a few weeks, he is collaborating in a project from a Hosting company, that wants a tool to massively upgrade an extension.
We have the same “image” that we have in the previous slide. We cover all the business opportunities of our client working with our Opponent-Partner
But we must not stop here....
------------------------------------------------------------------
Before coming, I went to the plaza of my city and asked questions to 300 people between the age of 25 and 60 years old. An intense weekend which confirmed me a frightening scenario.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Only a little more than 30% knew what free software is, and from these, almost half “believed” to know what differentiated it from the private software. That is to say almost 45 people from a total of 300 adults, thought to know what open source software is, so we can think that at a certain moment they knew their Android, or their Firefox were licensed this way.
When we analyze the answers regarding the other two questions, the data is significant.
It doesnt even reach the 20% of those who dare to say they “believe” to know what Joomla is. And of these, only a 3% “believe” they are able to say three features of Joomla. Talking in figures: from 300 people only 2 people “believed” to know what Joomla is with a certain level of detail.
How do we turn this into a plus point?
How can we convert this into a point in our favor?
Know the possibilities that the products in your environment can offer . Expand your market.
Copy from the extension or template distributors, they already build for different products apart from Joomla.
What to say about the hosting providers… Their staff is specialized in Joomla, that is true. But surely they have found themselves more than once with a Drupal or Alfresco configuration.
Joomla is not an island in an ocean of clients. Its a fish in an ocean full of fishes, which has to create its slot to grow. And instead of growing isolated from the rest of the fish in a fish tank, he must grow together with the rest of the members of its species.
Extend the number of Rival-Partner with those companies and professionals that can increase the added value that you offer to your clients. Go back home from the J and Beyond with ALL the cards from those who you believe can cover one of your today weak points and make it one of your strengths.
Javier Gómez, teached me many years ago that French is not better than English, that you may need to work in the Eifel Tower from Paris and there English is less useful than French. The best in one the cases doesnt have to be the best of the other. In a project where your value as template developer may be necesarry to use a CCK for Joomla and in another one for WordPress. Surround yourself with an ecosystem of Rival-Partners which allow you to demonstrate that you are good in giving solutions to the clients, very good with Joomla (of course), but your not less proficient in applying the technology or the business to other products which provide market solutions.

In the automobile world, we all understand. The BMW mechanic in the BMW official car shop (Remember that you are Joomla) is the person who is best going to solve your problem… But surely if he has to «touch» a Mercedes-Benz because its a business opportunity and he wants to win a client… he would do it with an excellent quality.
And for sure that if he needs to touch the motor, paint, etc… Its not just one mechanic, but two specialists… Well, thats the model!
