Projects
Main: New Procedures
•

For Tocumen Airport, departure (SID), arrival (STAR), and approach (RNP)
procedures were redesigned.

•

These new procedures were designed with the intent to minimize the
arrival/departure conflict (horizontal & vertical separation) which would, in
term, reduce unnecessary delays and fuel burn due to holding patterns.

•

The procedures were also validated against FAA and ICAO standards for
separation between aircraft, and ground obstacle clearance.

•

The approaches were built for Required Navigation Performance (RNP) 0.1
systems, which has an error margin of 1/10th of a nautical mile (608ft). As
these approaches are GPS-based, they can reduce or even eliminate the
need for ILS systems, through a similar or better precision. Also, both
runways could be RNP-enabled (instead of a single runway end being ILSenabled), and a reduction in installation & maintenance costs.

Project: Optimization Studies
•

Tocumen Airport’s operations were optimized for the following scenarios
–

•

RNP procedure usage for landings by 25%, 50% and 100% of the Copa Airlines and Copa
Colombia fleet.
South Pier design and its effect on ground operations and delays.

Both studies were conducted for different time periods on a standard day of
operations, to analyze the impact on all of Copa’s operations.
–

Copa Airlines’ six operational banks, each two or three hours long.

–

Copa Airlines’ full schedule of operations (6:00 am through 10:00 pm local time (GMT-05:00))

–

Peak hours (4:00 pm through 10:00 pm local time)

–

Full 24-hour Schedule

–

These studies were conducted with simulated foreign airline traffic (i.e.
United, Delta, American, etc. with their actual routes)
Project: New Runway 03R/21L
•
•

Capacity studies were performed to assess when would a third runway be
required. It would be needed no later than 2024, using Copa’s local growth
and a 3% growth rate for other carriers.
The runway would be located east of the current 03R/21L with 1500’ of
separation

Original design. It has been amended throughout
the project. North is to the right.
