1. Social Media is used worldwidefor many purposes. This can be from
promoting artists to educating and informing users, from
communicating with family and friends, to being a formof
entertainment to pass the time.
Produced by Emma Grimes and Zainab Khalil, this documentary aims to
explore the effects of social media on a person’s everyday life. Social
media plays an active part in 2.2 billion peoples lives, with over 12 new
active mobile social users added every second.
This one-hour long documentary is a one off airing on BBC Three to
enforce the usage of social media on society in both a negative and
positive way. Itincludes exciting interviews with experts; one of which is
Mike Pattison, a curriculumleader of social sciences, informing the
audience on using social media in the work place and in education – as
well as talking to members of the public to discover their understanding
and usageof social networking.
Experts in the documentary praisesocialmedia and how it is “An
important way of communicating these days.” along with how it is useful
to engage with young people in whatever subjectthey’re taught. They
also become critical of social media, telling us how “People can become
almost obsessed” and it is known of students to be “Up all hours of the
night” on sites like Facebook.
Fronted by Grimes and Khalil, the show is filmed in and around the local
area of Solihull Sixth FormCollege. Locations include the cafeteria,
classrooms and the entrance to the College as well as shots fromthe
local shopping centre of Solihull.
Statistical information about how social media is used is included in the
documentary, with sources varying fromNews Reports to Official
Statistics (e.g. YouTube). Informativearchivalfootage appears to be
fromshows such as Doctor Phil and Primetime news broadcasts
discussing theaddiction of teens to their phones and social networking
sites.
Grimes voiced: “I loved being part of the documentary and finding out
how experts used social networking to help with the teaching of
students. Itwas a great team and production to work with and I
2. thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
With many documentaries produced and aired on television now, this
documentary is a standoutshow fromothers distributed today. Many
documentaries and news broadcasts try to indulge themselves into the
world of social networking butthis stands out against the rest as the
presenters and producers aremembers of society who frequently use
social media for many reasons. Who better to explain why it’s so popular
in the youth than those who experience social media daily?
