The document discusses various narrative and genre theories put forth by different theorists. It summarizes the key ideas from several theorists, including Roland Barthes, who proposed codes for analyzing narratives like the hermeneutic code and enigma code; Steven Neale, who discussed genre conventions and audience pleasure; Levi Strauss, who discussed binary opposites; Tzvetan Todorov, who outlined five stages in narratives; and Vladimir Propp, who identified common character roles in stories like heroes and villains. Examples are given of how some of these theories could be applied to analyzing the horror genre.
Within this presentation I take the time to explain narrative by definition; discussing theorists, relating them to my narrative idea and elaborating on the theories.
Thinking of getting a dog? Be aware that breeds like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds can be loyal and dangerous. Proper training and socialization are crucial to preventing aggressive behaviors. Ensure safety by understanding their needs and always supervising interactions. Acetabularia Information For Class 9 .docxvaibhavrinwa19
Acetabularia acetabulum is a single-celled green alga that in its vegetative state is morphologically differentiated into a basal rhizoid and an axially elongated stalk, which bears whorls of branching hairs. The single diploid nucleus resides in the rhizoid.
This slide is special for master students (MIBS & MIFB) in UUM. Also useful for readers who are interested in the topic of contemporary Islamic banking.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
The simplified electron and muon model, Oscillating Spacetime: The Foundation...RitikBhardwaj56
Discover the Simplified Electron and Muon Model: A New Wave-Based Approach to Understanding Particles delves into a groundbreaking theory that presents electrons and muons as rotating soliton waves within oscillating spacetime. Geared towards students, researchers, and science buffs, this book breaks down complex ideas into simple explanations. It covers topics such as electron waves, temporal dynamics, and the implications of this model on particle physics. With clear illustrations and easy-to-follow explanations, readers will gain a new outlook on the universe's fundamental nature.
2. He said that a narrative text have a deeper meaning to them and you have to
unravel them to find that meaning. He came up with these five codes:
The Hermeneutic Code (HER) = (the voice of truth) The way a story avoids
telling the truth or revealing all the facts to be able to drop clues for the
reader and create mystery
The Enigma/ Proairetic Code (ACT) = (empirical voice) the way tension is
built up through the story to leave the audience guessing what will happen
next.
The Semantic Code (SEM) = (the voice of the person) A text that suggest an
additional meaning by way of connotation which the story suggests.
The Symbolic Code (SYM) = (the voice of symbols) similar to semantic but it
acts on a wider level. This is typically done in the use of antithesis, where
new meaning arises out of opposing and conflict ideas.
The Cultural Code (REF) = (voice of science) Looks at the audiences wider
cultural knowledge, morality and ideology
3. His theory was about genre and he argued that pleasure is
derived from 'repetition and difference, there would be no
pleasure without difference. We may derive pleasure from
observing how the conventions of the genre are manipulated. We
may also enjoy the stretching of a genre in new directions and
the consequent shifting of our expectations.
Hollywood’s generic regime performs two inter-related
functions:
To guarantee meanings and pleasures for audiences
To offset the considerable economic risks of industrial film
production by providing cognitive collateral against innovation
and difference.
4. He believed that the way we understand certain words depends not
so much on any meaning they themselves directly contain, but much
more by our understanding of the difference between the word and
its 'opposite' or, as he called it 'binary opposites'.
Examples:
Young vs Old
Villain vs Hero
Good vs Bad
5. Todorovs said that all narrative include contain five fundamental
stages which are:
A state of equilibrium (all as it should be, the norm)
A disruption caused by an event
A recognition that the disruption has occurred
An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption
A return or restoration of a new equilibrium
6. Propp’s said that in very narrative there are always certain
people that play certain roles. These roles can be:
hero
villain
heroine
side kick
donor
mentor
father
7. RolandBartes
If applied to this genre it would use the Enigma/Proairetic code
as horror films are all about tension building and without it a
horror piece would not have the same effect.
StevenNeale
His theory would apply to this genre as I would have to include
the conventions that are recognized by my audience and be able
to manipulate them in a way that my audience will get pleasure
from it. But also the audience might enjoy and get pleasure
from seeing the genre being stretched out of its comfort zone.
8. Levi strauss
Applying his theory to this genre and the binary opposites would be
Evil against good or supernatural against humans.
TzentanTodorov
If applied to this genre :
Starting a with a normal night in with both couples
Their friends show up who are linked with the events that will start
to occur
The main guy is becoming distant and seems slightly off to the main
girl and the friends.
The guy kills off the fiends which helps makes him feel better
The end is happy for the main guy as his duty of killing is now
complete.
9. VladmirPropps
Applied to this genre the people who will play these roles would be:
Heroine = main female actor
Villain= the main male actor and the evil figure
Side kick= friend
Donor= the figure
Typically in horrors there normally isn't some type of hero depending
on how the story lie will ned and typically no one wins expect the
villain and there are not many roles that are included in the genre.
