Unit 26: Film Studies
By
Jessica Ribeiro
Plot : Summary
• Genre: Horror
• Rating: 15
• Story Line: In America there was a mass murder. Policemen Sam, (Wentworth Miller,
Nicolas Cage, Chris Messina ) went to investigate. Trying not to tread on the bodies, they
took pictures of each one. Tommy ( Wentworth Miller) saw something on the opposite wall
but he couldn't read it. He walks over to it and sees the numbers "7734" in calculator form,
written in blood. When taking pictures of this, he turned his camera upside-down and told
an approaching police officer. When he pointed with the hand that the camera was in, he
accidentally took a picture of the upside-down numbers. He (Nicolas Cage) was about to
delete the picture when he realized something. The numbers were now a word. The word
was “Hell” The policemen leave the scene thinking that the word was just a sick joke. Until
they all start to encounter explicit dreams relating to the murders. 4 months Later When
one of their fellow police offers “Andy” (Chris Messina) takes his life he leaves them a tape
telling them about the dreams and voices he kept hearing. They both realizes that it not
just them that are dealing with the weird happenings. Tommy ( Wentworth Miller ) ignores
this but Dominic (Nicolas Cage) looks into all of the murders and when he realizes they
were all involved in a tragic accident where they should have died. They are lead to believe
that the number linked some what to that. Months pass by without any weird occurrences, ,
Until they then notice that the numbers are a date, the date where hell is suppose to walk
the earth, soon after the prediction comes true and darkness will walks the earth!!!
How the 7 characteristics and how they will relate to my film
Worldwide release:
Due to the fact that the film is in the genre of horror, we thought that it would be best suited to be released late
October early November, so the worldwide release date will be on the 31st
October.
Budget:
We have decided on a budget of 100 million. This will allow us to be flexible and able to hire A list actors to play the
parts. It will also allow us to have the best special effects and costumes, makeup, location, equipment and
marketing
Marketing Budget:
We decided on a 100 million pounds budget for the whole film which will include everything needed to make and
promote the film. We have decided that 300 thousand pounds will go towards the marketing budget, we will
market our film, by using adverts to broadcast the trailers and billboards, bus posters, advertisement on YouTube,
and page spreads in magazines etc.
A range of merchandising
The merchandising that we have chosen to use to help promote our movie is;
• Phone applications
• Clothing
• Stationary
• Possible made into a book (depending on sales)
Holiday Release Date:
Were hoping to release the movie in America and Europe on the 31st
of October, which help the ratings dramatically as
its Halloween and it will encourage people to go see the film and everyone likes a good scare on Halloween.
Our Star Vehicle
We have hired some A list actors to play the characters in our movie, but we have one star vehicle to help promote their
career as we believe there have a very promising career as and actor ahead of them, this movie will help their
career dramatically as the role they will be playing is brilliant.
A wide Demographic
The demographic is the marketing of part of a population identified as a group, especially as a target for sales or
advertisement. So we have decided to target our film for the age group of 15 and above. On the other hand the
merchandising differs between ages for example from the ages of around 15-25 phone apps ,clothing and
stationary would be best suited for that age group whilst the book would be best suited for the older age group.
Two step Flow Theory
If someone who has said to have more
power than others, has an opinion-
others will agree with them. Most people
form their opinions based on opinion
leaders. For instance: If a cool kid has
an opinion, he will try and force it upon
a nerdy kid, to make him feel superior.
The two-step flow of communication hypothesis
was first introduced by Paul Lazarsfeld, Bernard
Berelson, and Hazel Gaudet in The People's
Choice, a 1944 study focused on the process of
decision-making during a Presidential election
campaign These researchers expected to find
empirical support for the direct influence of
media messages on voting intentions. They were
surprised to discover, however, that informal,
personal contacts were mentioned far more
frequently than exposure to radio or newspaper
as sources of influence on voting behaviour.
Armed with this data, Katz and Lazarsfeld
developed the two-step flow theory of mass
communication.
Todorov TheoryWhat is Todorov theory? :
Todorov’s theory is basically a 3 stage theory of:
Equilibrium (Everything is how it should be)
Disequilibrium (Something disrupts the normality of things )
Equilibrium (the problem is solved and new normality (equilibrium) is produced at the end of the
narrative)
This theory has been used in pretty much every movie as there are all about solving some kind of
mystery, murder or problem. The stages can be moved around to suit the different type of genre
for example Romance will always end in equilibrium as it’s a happy genre and the aim is for
people to leave happy, Crime genre films will end in equilibrium as the story is told through the
police offers, so we feel uneasy for them. crime films are in some what way a propaganda as the
aim is for the public to feel safe with the police force, Horror films are normally left with what we
think is equilibrium but something happens right at the very end to bring it back to an
disequilibrium which is common for horror movies so your left uneasy and scared because
disequilibrium has not been solved they also do this to leave the movie open for a sequel if the
movie becomes successful,
How my film links to Todorov Theory:
My film will relate to Todorov’s theory, because I will use the three step flow of equilibrium,
disequilibrium and equilibrium. I will slightly change the ending so it though to be equilibrium
again but it soon changes back to disequilibrium, I will do this to leave the movie open for a
sequel.
