Marie suffers abuse as a child which causes nightmares and leads her to use drugs and alcohol. Her mental state deteriorates, and she hallucinates and hears voices telling her to harm others. Her boyfriend tries to help but she kills him in a rage. Overwhelmed by her psychological torture, she commits suicide. The film follows Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disruption, and reaction/repair, but subverts it by not resolving the problem. Marie's condition worsens instead of improving, heightening fear for the audience.
