Feudal society was based on the obligations and responsibilities between lords and vassals. Lords provided land and protection to vassals in exchange for military service and loyalty. This system organized medieval Europe into a hierarchy with kings at the top who granted land to lesser lords who then contracted local peasants and farmers as vassals in a pyramid of obligation.
