The Green Committee meeting covered improvements to the driving range for safety, tree care including removing a cottonwood tree and Imprelis update, and water and turf management. For the driving range, a consultant developed options to enhance safety and experience. For water, the goal is obtaining enough supply for the season while practicing organic fertilizer and lowering water requirements by increasing low-maintenance areas and changing grass varieties. The next meeting is March 26th.

Improved On-farm Irrigation Management for Olive Growing
This document summarizes a study on improving on-farm irrigation management for olive growing in Morocco and Syria. Pilot tests were conducted applying different irrigation treatments to olive orchards, including flood irrigation (control), irrigating at 100% and 70% of crop water requirements. In contrast, watersheds with larger areas of agriculture and urbanization (<35% forest cover) had worse water quality. The results also indicated that restoration of riparian forest buffers could improve water quality by reducing sediment levels by up to 9% and nutrient levels by up to 22%. The study highlights the importance of maintaining forest cover and implementing best management practices in agricultural and urban areas to protect water quality in tropical watersheds.

It is increasingly being recognised internationally that integrated catchment management (ICM) is a useful organising framework for tackling the ongoing challenge of balancing sustainable use and development of our natural resource, against achieving environmental goals. The basic principles of ICM (Williams, 2012) are to:
• Take a holistic and integrated approach to the management of land, biodiversity, water and community resources at the water catchment scale;
• Involve communities in planning and managing their landscapes; and
• Find a balance between resource use and resource conservation
ICM is now well established in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. In Europe the ICM approach has been proposed as being required to achieve effective water and catchment management, and is the approach being promoted by DEFRA for the UK, where it is called the “Catchment Based Approach” (CaBA). The principles and methodologies behind ICM sit well within the context of the Water Framework Directive with its aims and objectives for good water quality, sustainable development and public participation in water resource management. In Ireland it is proposed that the ICM approach will underlie the work and philosophy in developing and implementing future River Basin Management Plans.

Utah Grazing Improvement Program

This project worked with small farmers in Florida to reduce water quality degradation from farm runoff. The project exposed farmers to techniques like efficient compost/manure use, improved irrigation, and solar power systems. Soil and water tests showed that at one site, practices increased organic matter and adjusted nutrient levels, while a flooded site had increased hardness, calcium, and sodium. The project provided training, demonstrations, and consultations to farmers, with most upgrading irrigation systems and some adopting conservation practices. Ongoing challenges include excessive manure use and high solar costs.

The committee will get new homeowner feedback on a scaled down plan raising fees $30/month to implement possible projects like a swing set, basketball court, and paved walking trails.

Bundoora Park in Melbourne was facing water usage issues due to drought and restrictions. It worked with local organizations to develop partnerships and solutions to save water. Over $500,000 was invested to enlarge wetlands and dams, convert fairways to warm season grass, and obtain water rights from a nearby creek. These changes resulted in a 96% reduction in water usage, significant cost savings, flood mitigation, and keeping the golf course and park operational. Further conversions are ongoing and additional water capture opportunities are being explored.

The Long Preston Wet Grassland Project aims to restore wet grassland habitat on the floodplain through various conservation efforts. It involves partnerships between conservation organizations and local farmers/authorities. Key goals include improving habitat for wildlife, providing funding to farmers, and increasing awareness. Surveys show the area now supports many breeding wading birds. A river restoration plan was also developed to improve the degraded ecological functions of the Long Preston Deeps site. The future involves further business/tourism development and continuing conservation management.

Turf Management & Water • Goal: Provide exceptional playing conditions for the golf season. • All practices of turf management are being evaluated. • Water: Obtain enough water to maintain health of plants for the growing season. • Fertilizer: Organic fertilizer to build soil health and not over stimulate plant growth that depends on more water. • Height of Cut: – Plan A: Increase the amount of low maintenance areas. – Plan B: secondary rough: 3.5-4” tee surrounds, property lines and out of play areas.
- 14. Turf Management & Water • Seed: Fescues and warm season grasses – Buffalograss at the tennis courts. Ptarmigan CC is having success with Buffalograss and lower water requirements. • Traffic Management: Continue to review golfer and cart traffic throughout the golf season. • Irrigation Practices: handwater, wetting agents and soil amendments, water/drought management plans for limited water use.
