Executive Summary of MG Feasibility Study
Synopsis:
On 10/15/2014, a feasibility study was started to explore what it would take to get the school’s
1968 MGB GT to the top of national SCCA competition in either the H-Production, F-Production, or
E-Production preparation formula.
All rule analysis was performed using the October 2014 SCCA General Competition Rules.
Contributions were as follows:
Hali Money – Aerodynamics
Joe Legan – Engine
Dan Kennedy – Weight and Wheels/Tires
Danny Spoeth – Suspension
Matt Kurdock – Drivetrain, Brakes, Fuel
The details of the feasibility study will be found in the included file “MG Feasibility Study.xlsx”.
Summary of Findings:
H-Production
We feel that the biggest detriment to laptimes in HP comes from excess weight, relatively low
engine output, street gearing, rear traction, and likely a high cg. In addition, the frame of the car is
not straight (>150 pound front crossweight, 1 degree camber asymmetry) and this would need to
be addressed.
To summarize the recommendations:
 Straighten frame, patch subframe holes (TBD)
 Remove 150 lb of excess weight, includes new wheels ($4-6k)
 Buy fully prepared and legal 133 hp crate engine from Paeco ($5.5k)
 Implement aero changes ($0.7k)
 Change race fuels (extra 2-3 hp) (sponsorship?)
 Torque biasing differential, new final drive gearing ($2.2k)
 Close ratio internals for gearbox and rebuild– 50 lb penalty ($1.6k)
 Drop ride height and other suspension changes ($3-5.4k)
 Faster steering rack ($0.5k)
 Custom exhaust, needed for ride height drop (TBD)
 Change to 20x8-13 Hoosier tire in softer compound (Sponsorship?)
 Data system (donation?)
 Total expenditure = $20.5k
F-Production
It goes without saying that FP is less feasible for the MG platform even with all modifications we
considered. The financial contribution would have to be matched by 2-3 years of effort from a
team of qualified students with outside assistance.
To summarize the recommendations:
 Straighten frame, patch subframe holes (TBD)
 Remove 250 lb of excess weight, includes new wheels ($7.7k)
 Buy fully prepared and legal 184 hp crate engine from Paeco ($8.4k)
 Implement aero changes ($0.7k)
 Change race fuels (extra 2-3 hp) (sponsorship?)
 Torque biasing differential, new final drive gearing ($2.2k)
 6-speed close ratio gearbox with dog-ring synchros ($3.5k)
 Brake upgrades ($2k)
 Major suspension changes: custom links, ARB’s, dampers, uprights ($11k)
 Faster steering rack ($0.5k)
 Custom exhaust, needed for ride height drop (TBD)
 Change to 20x8-13 Hoosier tire in softer compound (Sponsorship?)
 Data system (donation?)
 Total expenditure = $36k
E-Production
We feel that E-Production is not a feasible class for the MG. The reason for this is weight,
since the minimum class weight (with driver) for EP is 1760 lbs. With every feasible weight
reduction measure, the minimum weight of the EP prepared MG would be 1935 lbs; which is 175
lbs overweight. Since the EP and FP class rules are the same with the exception of the minimum
weight, the same modifications would have to be completed.
To summarize the recommendations:
 Straighten frame, patch subframe holes (TBD)
 Remove 250 lb of excess weight, includes new wheels ($7.7k)
 Buy fully prepared and legal 184 hp crate engine from Paeco ($8.4k)
 Implement aero changes ($0.7k)
 Change race fuels (extra 2-3 hp) (sponsorship?)
 Torque biasing differential, new final drive gearing ($2.2k)
 6-speed close ratio gearbox with dog-ring synchros ($3.5k)

Feasibility review summary

Matt Kurdock MSTE417 11/10/2014 Executive Summary of MG Feasibility Study Synopsis: On 10/15/2014, a feasibility study was started to explore what it would take to get the school’s 1968 MGB GT to the top of national SCCA competition in either the H-Production, F-Production, or E-Production preparation formula. All rule analysis was performed using the October 2014 SCCA General Competition Rules. Contributions were as follows: Hali Money – Aerodynamics Joe Legan – Engine Dan Kennedy – Weight and Wheels/Tires Danny Spoeth – Suspension Matt Kurdock – Drivetrain, Brakes, Fuel The details of the feasibility study will be found in the included file “MG Feasibility Study.xlsx”. Summary of Findings: H-Production We feel that the biggest detriment to laptimes in HP comes from excess weight, relatively low engine output, street gearing, rear traction, and likely a high cg. In addition, the frame of the car is not straight (>150 pound front crossweight, 1 degree camber asymmetry) and this would need to be addressed. To summarize the recommendations:  Straighten frame, patch subframe holes (TBD)  Remove 150 lb of excess weight, includes new wheels ($4-6k)  Buy fully prepared and legal 133 hp crate engine from Paeco ($5.5k)  Implement aero changes ($0.7k)  Change race fuels (extra 2-3 hp) (sponsorship?)  Torque biasing differential, new final drive gearing ($2.2k)  Close ratio internals for gearbox and rebuild– 50 lb penalty ($1.6k)  Drop ride height and other suspension changes ($3-5.4k)  Faster steering rack ($0.5k)  Custom exhaust, needed for ride height drop (TBD)  Change to 20x8-13 Hoosier tire in softer compound (Sponsorship?)  Data system (donation?)  Total expenditure = $20.5k
  • 2. F-Production It goes without saying that FP is less feasible for the MG platform even with all modifications we considered. The financial contribution would have to be matched by 2-3 years of effort from a team of qualified students with outside assistance. To summarize the recommendations:  Straighten frame, patch subframe holes (TBD)  Remove 250 lb of excess weight, includes new wheels ($7.7k)  Buy fully prepared and legal 184 hp crate engine from Paeco ($8.4k)  Implement aero changes ($0.7k)  Change race fuels (extra 2-3 hp) (sponsorship?)  Torque biasing differential, new final drive gearing ($2.2k)  6-speed close ratio gearbox with dog-ring synchros ($3.5k)  Brake upgrades ($2k)  Major suspension changes: custom links, ARB’s, dampers, uprights ($11k)  Faster steering rack ($0.5k)  Custom exhaust, needed for ride height drop (TBD)  Change to 20x8-13 Hoosier tire in softer compound (Sponsorship?)  Data system (donation?)  Total expenditure = $36k E-Production We feel that E-Production is not a feasible class for the MG. The reason for this is weight, since the minimum class weight (with driver) for EP is 1760 lbs. With every feasible weight reduction measure, the minimum weight of the EP prepared MG would be 1935 lbs; which is 175 lbs overweight. Since the EP and FP class rules are the same with the exception of the minimum weight, the same modifications would have to be completed. To summarize the recommendations:  Straighten frame, patch subframe holes (TBD)  Remove 250 lb of excess weight, includes new wheels ($7.7k)  Buy fully prepared and legal 184 hp crate engine from Paeco ($8.4k)  Implement aero changes ($0.7k)  Change race fuels (extra 2-3 hp) (sponsorship?)  Torque biasing differential, new final drive gearing ($2.2k)  6-speed close ratio gearbox with dog-ring synchros ($3.5k)  Brake upgrades ($2k)  Major suspension changes: custom links, ARB’s, dampers, uprights ($11k)  Faster steering rack ($0.5k)  Custom exhaust, needed for ride height drop (TBD)  Change to 20x8-13 Hoosier tire in softer compound (Sponsorship?)  Data system (donation?)  Total expenditure = $36k
