Introduction
 When a foreign individual or company is
establishes a business in other country and the
amount invested in such business is known as FDI
 The company of the country which invests in
other country is known as Home Country.
 And the Company in which FDI is done is known
as Host Country.
History of FDI
 In the years after the
second World War, Global
FDI was dominated by the
United State at the time of
1944. Since that time FDI
has Spread to become a
truly global phenomenon.
 FDI was introduced in the
Year 1991 under Foreign
Exchange management Act
(FEMA), by then Finance
Minister Dr. Manmohan

Methods of FDI
 The FDI may acquire
voting power of an
enterprise in an economy
through any of the
following methods.
 By incorporating a wholly
owned subsidiary or
company anywhere.
 By acquiring shares in an
associated enterprise.
 Through a merger or an
acquisition of an unrelated
enter.
 Participating in an equity
joint venture with another
investor or enterprise.
Route of FDI
 Automatic Route
Under the Automatic Route, the non-resident investor or
the Indian company does not require any approval from
Government of India for the investment.
 Government Route
Under the Government Route, prior to investment,
approval from the Government of India is required.
Proposals for foreign investment under Government
route, are considered by respective Administrative
Ministry/ Department.

How can India grow through FDI ?
 In 2014, the government increased
foreign investment upper limit from
26% to 49% in insurance sector. In
2019 Budget it further increased to
100%.
 It also launched Make in
India initiative in September 2014
under which FDI policy for 25 sectors
was liberalized further.
 As of April 2015, FDI inflow in India
increased by 48% since the launch of
"Make in India" initiative.
 The Department for Promotion of
Industry and Internal Tradeand Invest
India has developed the India
Investment Grid (IIG) which provides a
pan-India database of projects from
Indian promoters for promoting and
facilitating foreign investments.

Outward FDI from India
 According to the data provided by Reserve Bank
of India (RBI), India’s outward Foreign Direct
Investment (OFDI) in equity, loan and
guaranteed issue stood at US$ 11.33 billion in
2017-18 and US$ 1.69 billion in February 2019.

Introduction  When a foreign individual or company is establishes a business in other country and the amount invested in such business is known as FDI  The company of the country which invests in other country is known as Home Country.  And the Company in which FDI is done is known as Host Country.
  • 3. History of FDI  In the years after the second World War, Global FDI was dominated by the United State at the time of 1944. Since that time FDI has Spread to become a truly global phenomenon.  FDI was introduced in the Year 1991 under Foreign Exchange management Act (FEMA), by then Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh
  • 4. Types of FDI By Direction  Inward  Outward By Target  Greenfield Investment  Horizontal investment  Vertical Investment

Methods of FDI  The FDI may acquire voting power of an enterprise in an economy through any of the following methods.  By incorporating a wholly owned subsidiary or company anywhere.  By acquiring shares in an associated enterprise.  Through a merger or an acquisition of an unrelated enter.  Participating in an equity joint venture with another investor or enterprise.

Route of FDI  Automatic Route Under the Automatic Route, the non-resident investor or the Indian company does not require any approval from Government of India for the investment.  Government Route Under the Government Route, prior to investment, approval from the Government of India is required. Proposals for foreign investment under Government route, are considered by respective Administrative Ministry/ Department.

Why is FDI important ? any considerations of going global ?  Foreign investment allows companies to accomplish several tasks:  Avoiding foreign government pressure for local production.  Circumventing trade barriers,  Making the move from domestic export sales to a locally based national sales office.  Capability to increase total production capacity.  Opportunity for co-production, joint venture with local partners, joint marketing arrangements.

Who regulate FDI in India ?  According to Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), an Investment of 10% or above from Overseas is considered as FDI.  In India, Foreign Direct Investment Policy is Regulated under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 2000 Governed by the Reserve Bank of India.

  • 29. How can India grow through FDI ?  In 2014, the government increased foreign investment upper limit from 26% to 49% in insurance sector. In 2019 Budget it further increased to 100%.  It also launched Make in India initiative in September 2014 under which FDI policy for 25 sectors was liberalized further.  As of April 2015, FDI inflow in India increased by 48% since the launch of "Make in India" initiative.  The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Tradeand Invest India has developed the India Investment Grid (IIG) which provides a pan-India database of projects from Indian promoters for promoting and facilitating foreign investments.

  • 31. Outward FDI from India  According to the data provided by Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) in equity, loan and guaranteed issue stood at US$ 11.33 billion in 2017-18 and US$ 1.69 billion in February 2019.
