Gil Scott Heron Essay
Gil Scott Heron BHSECQ Rahat Today, rap music is an ever growing genre of music that is
often centered on hedonistic pursuits such as wealth, cars, drinks, and fame. About forty years
ago, however, rap music focused on an entirely different subject matter. During the 1970s,
African Americans sung rap songs to express the need for Black empowerment in society;
though their form of singing was not called rapping back then, it was called spoken word poetry,
a form of song in which verses of poetry were performed with a fixed beat before an audience.
African Americans used this style of singing to express the discontent with the economics and
politics during the 1970s. The black population was still economically and politically powerless...

The context and setting of this rap is American in the 1970 s. Historically, this period came after
the Civil Rights Movement, during the start of the Nixon era. The Vietnam War was dividing the
nation s population into anti war protestors and those that supported the war effort. It was an era
of recession and continued change for minorities. One of the issues was enforced racial
integration after the Civil Rights Movement, which many institutions had still not complied with.
The struggle to find equality even after the movement was something African Americans at the
time had to deal with. The support for the black power movement was one of many results of
this struggle. The media and press largely did not report on the alienation that was still present.
This was an inspiration for Scott Heron and this song in particular. Factual References in The
Revolution Will Not be Televised Gil Scott Heron presents many references to the superficial
media and policies that were at the time ignorant of the struggle of African American integration.
His spoken word poetry describes these outlets of references before repeating the phrase The
Revolution Will Not Be Televised... to strengthen the claim that the consumer media is superficially
choosing to pretend that all was well when in fact a revolution was happening at their doorstep. A
selection of references will be analyzed from

Impact Of Cloud On The Organization s Network Infrastructure
Introduction:
The central theme of this essay focuses on the impact of cloud on the organization s network
infrastructure. While going through the impact we will also analyze how to optimize network
performance for cloud and we will also discuss about how the cloud impact the lifecycle
orchestration and the organization. The key aspect o the cloud is discussed in detail with suitable
examples.
Background:
The cloud computing is noting but storing the data and information n the internet, instead of
saving the data on the computer hard drive. Since the data and information are stored in the cloud,
it becomes easy to access the data from anywhere in the world (Griffith, 2016). Due to the data
availability the data integrity is affected in the cloud. Cloud provides a flexible bandwidth, if the
organization demands increases we can scale up the cloud capacity. The maintenance cost is low
(cloud , 2015). Due to this reasons the organizations are moving towards the cloud.
Due to the changing need of the IT the cloud also changed, it has combined with WAN and SD
WAN. Due to this the managing if cloud in a large organization has become easier. In summary we
will discuss in detail about cloud as organizational WAN. The other aspects like optimizing the
network performance is also discussed in detail.
Optimizing network performance for the cloud:
The cloud makes a few organizations overlook the essentials of IT, things like capacity
management, change control, and network

Scarlet Ibis Symbolism
Symbolism Used in The Scarlet Ibis
In The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, Hurst uses the symbol of birds to further explain the theme of
death in the story. Even from the very first paragraph, birds are used to foreshadow the ending of
the story. Hurst illustrates, The five o clock by the chimney still marked time, but the oriole nest
in the elm was untenanted and rocked back and forth like an empty cradle. (Hurst 1). In this
sentence, Hurst is describing an Oriole birds nest that is sitting empty in a tree. This foreshadows
the ending of the book by symbolizing Doodle s absence by the end of the story. Even though the
brother s life will continue on, like the clocks, Doodles spot in the brother s life will be much like

Hurst again uses bird symbols in the story when he vividly describes, The bird began to flutter, but
the wings were uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled
down, bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud. (Hurst
5). While telling the story of the ibis, Hurst is simultaneously describing Doodle s demise. Right
before Doodle dies, he is attempting to catch up to his brother in the thunderstorm. Even though
Doodle tries hard to catch up to his brother, much like the bird who is attempting to fly, Doodle s
physical shortcomings cause him to fail. Hurst then directly relates Doodle s death to a bird
when he is describing Doodle s death. Doodle s brother recounts, I screamed above the pounding
storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there
crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain. (Hurst 6). Hurst related Doodle s
dead body to the dead ibis from earlier in the story. This metaphor seems to help his brother come
to terms with what has happened. Although he had been cruel to him by running ahead of him, he
is comforting Doodle now that he is dead. The many bird symbols throughout The Scarlet Ibis help
to further support the theme of death in the

Comparison Of 1984 And Contemporary Western Society
Sometimes people don t want to hear the truth because they don t want their illusions destroyed.
(Friedrich Nietzsche) George Orwell s 1984 and Aldous Huxley s Brave New World both deal
with the idea that to be truly happy, you must also be completely ignorant. When characters rebel
against this deceitful happiness, outrage breaks out from the government. It is unacceptable to
stray from the norms. It is a topic also portrayed in today s society. 1984, Brave New World, and
contemporary western society all use media to promote the government s ideas to their respective
societies. All three societies also have distinct definitions of what romantic and sexual relationships
should be. Going against the deceiving ideas and definitions they have... Show more content on

In fact, monogomy is so normal in our society that polygomy is against the law, and adultery is a
felony. Western society fully accepts that marriage and serious relationships are exclusive. To act
against this by having multiple partners (whether all involved parties are informed or not) is
objectionable legally and socially. However, it is believed that it is against human nature to have
romantic and sexual feelings for only one person, explaining why divorce is so common in
western society. Polygamous communities and relationships are ostracized and often mocked in

The Timken Company Case 46
THE TIMKEN COMPANY
In 2002, The Timken Company was considering acquiring The Torrington Company from Ingersoll
Rand. The acquisition would make a clear statement to the market about Timken s commitment to
remain a worldwide leader in the bearing industry as it would result in the combination of more than
100 years of bearing manufacturing and development experience.
Because the two companies shared many of the same customers but had few products in common,
customers would surely appreciate the ability to have more of their needs met by Timken s sales
representatives. Moreover, Timken s potential annual cost savings from consolidating
manufacturing facilities and processes were estimated to be more than $80 million.

Timken s sales came from bearings and about 20% of its sales were from outside the United States.
Timken had operations in 25 countries and employed nearly 18,000 workers.
The Timken Company
In 1898, veteran St. Louis carriage maker Henry Timken patented a design for tapered roller
bearings (bearings enclosed between a pair of concentric rings) to facilitate the motion of
carriage axles. The following year, Timken and his sons, William and Henry (H. H.), founded The
Timken Roller Bearing Axle Company, which was the beginning of what was to become a global
manufacturer of highly engineered bearings, alloy and specialty steel, and related components. In
1902, the company moved to Canton, Ohio, to be near the growing steelworks in Pittsburgh and
the new automobile factories in Buffalo, Cleveland, and Detroit. In 1908, with the debut of the
Ford Model T, the Timkens business soared. In 1917, the company began making its own steel for
bearings.

Regulating Herbal Supplements Essay
Regulating Herbal Supplements
One of the major parts of everyday life is also a major wildcard in the medical field. It does not
have as many rules and restrictions as synthetic drugs have on the market and are generally said to
be safe until proven otherwise, which is very hard to control system. Herbal supplements should be
tested and approved like all medicine. This way they will be limited, controlled, and meticulously
measured to give the safe amount to the people who need it, so the number of accidents regarding
this would decline as a result of this.
Since 1994 when herbal medicines became more widespread the Food and Drug Administration has
had multiple issues with pesticides germs, and other foreign substances in these products.
Furthermore, they have also had the trouble of manufacturers disclosing or including ingredients
that are not on the drugs since the rules regarding these types of drugs are not as strict as that of
synthetic drug regulations. Additionally, the supplements made in these factories are not required

Analysis Of Joss Whedon s Film
As the thrill and nostalgia for Western films fizzled out, the appeal of space travel became the
forefront of interest among movie goers. Joss Whedon s short lived show Firefly depicted life in
the world 500 years into the future after a civil war between the galactic government known as the
Alliance, and the rebel forces known as the Browncoats. Whedon s film Serenity, is a continuation
of the show that follows Captain Malcolm Reynoldsand his crew. The film falls into the space

an authoritarian political ideology to prevent any forms of rebellion by placing spies in places

The Inner City Hd Center
The inner city HD center currently have 81 active patients, of which 90% of the patient population
are chronically noncompliant and two patients whom has expressed the desire to die and suicidal
thoughts in the last three months. The facility also cater to a diverse patient population and is
primarily of a lower socioeconomic status. As previously indicated, nurses currently do not screen
for depressive symptoms. With that said, it is impossible to compare the context of research to
those seen in professional practice. However, multiple studies agree that education plays a vital role
in depression. Keskin and Engin (2011) wrote that educational status greatly impact depression
and suicidal ideation. They found that those experiencing depression (F = 7.42, p = 0.001) and
suicidal ideation (F = 4.51, p = 0.014) have a lower educational status. Similarly, Nabolsi et al.
(2015) found that individuals with higher education lead higher QOL (F = 7.250; P = 0.001) and
are less likely to display depressive symptoms (F = 10.721, P = 0.000). On the contrary, studies has
also shown that lower educational status, more specifically, hinder patients ability to fully
comprehend their disease process and treatment modalities (Chiang, Livneh, Yen, Li, Tsai, 2013;

Gun Control Restrictions
The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, which is the highest total in the world. The guns
was first intended for hunting and self protection. Later on, it was brought into the military for use.
For that reason, people believe that guns can only be used in the military. Others say that the
Second Amendment gives them the right to have guns and use it for protection. This was for if any
person tried to attack them, they would have protection with them at all times. Later on, guns got
used for the wrongs reasons. More crimes were being develop, like the assassination of President
John F. Kennedy. Now, people want more restrictions on gun
ownership and how it should be used.
If some restrictions were to be made, some say it will not make much of a difference. Guns use
had lead to violence in the past, but also it coud be a good protection for humans against attackers.
The argument that may still be going on today is if the United Statesshould put more restrictions on
gun ownership and use. The reasons why people are still asking for more restrictions is because
more crimes and shooting as been happening lately. There were about 126 mass shootings around
2001 to 2014. The opponents of this issue think that if more restrictions were made, that would not
change the fact that there would be as much shootings as there was. Reasons to believe this was that
even with more restrictions, shootings would still go on. Nothing would stop the criminals from
killing others. Now,

Persuasive Essay On Volunteering
eather French Henry once said, Volunteering is at the very core of being a human, no one has
made it in life without someone else s help, (Volunteering Solutions 3). Similarly, the butterfly is a
very small natural force which over a period of time gains a cumulatively large effect that produces
great beauty. This phenomenon begins first with insurmountable struggles and works its way
through a snarled mess of webbing and eventually takes flight. With every effort, the first step in
volunteering is usually the hardest. However, once the intention is set, the flight of volunteering
takes off. In fact, many scholars over the years have argued over how involved an individual should
be in one s community. Some believe the largest reward a person can achieve from givingtheir time
and money to the good of their community is the satisfaction, accomplishment, and pride that
comes from within. Ultimately, an individual s role should be founded on one s ability to be
impactful to their community, this impact can be quick or long lasting but in the end, the results of
volunteering demonstrate leadership and stewardship which through example inspires others to do
the same, creating a better place for all to live.
The purpose of giving stems from the ability of each individual to be impactful with their own
actions. Through the action of giving to one s community, the meaning of the action does not lie in
how much money or how much volunteering is produced, rather how much

My Rifle Research Paper
I have got very many gifts and a bunch of unique, special gifts. This unreal item was a .308
caliber rifle. It was such an outrage of excitement as my parents were giving it to me. Three
aspects of the gun stood out to me it had a great design to it, the size of the caliber, and the size
of the gun itself. The design was an option of my choice, I had always wanted a rifle like this one.
My rifle, in my opinion, has one of the most distinctive designs for a rifle. Starting at the stock of
the gun, it was sleek, natural camouflage , synthetic stock. As you go up the gun, you arrive at
the metal parts, and this matte finish of black really matched the stock, which gave it my
attention as I focused on it at first glance. The barrel, at the peak of the gun adjacent to the
opening system, was thick, so if I was to shoot multiple times in a row the barrel wouldn t warp
after constant heating through the violent explosion of the cartridge as the bullets races through
the end of the barrel. On the other hand, the bullet measurements were just as important. At the
time I was given the gun, I wasn t very old or strong. If I was too have received this rifle in any
caliber bigger than .308 I wouldn t have been able to shoot it. On the other side, the deer I was to be

1.What is the current status of Mondavi s external environment? Generally, what are the primary
industry wide sources of competitive advantage? Which ones matter to Mondavi? Why?
I apply Porter s Five Forces to analyst the current status of Mondavi s external environment as
follows
(Grant, page 69):
1.Industry Rivalry:
There are many competitors in this industry, but the main competitor of the company is Gallo

changed to off premise because people started buying wine from supermarkets and wholesaler
clubs (Roberto, exhibit 11). This change leads to the more price sensitivity because the consumers
had more chance to compare a price before making a decision to buy bottles of wine. Therefore, the
bargaining power s customer is dramatically increased.
There are two sources of the industry wide of competitive advantage, including cost advantage and
differentiation advantage (Grant, paage178). From my analysis, Mondavi can apply both sources
to use with its products, but it should use one competitive advantage at a time. For instance,
according to exhibit 4 in Jug and pop pre segments, Woodbridge should be applied to the cost
advantage because the price competition in this type of wine was very aggressive at that time.
Thus, the company has to reduce costs to compete with other competitors. However, referring to
exhibit 4 in luxury prem segment, the company should apply the differentiation advantage for
Robert Mondavi (RM)Winery and RM Coastal Private Selection because these two brands target
the high end customers caring for the quality rather than the price. According to the Porter s
generic strategies (Grant, page 178), the company does not in the scope of a single segment;
therefore, the industry wide method would be a suitable one for the company. For this reason, the
company has to separate the brands of wine before

Similarities Between Anne Bradstreet And Who Deseased August
The two poems I chose to connect with are Anne Bradstreet s, In Memory of My Dear
Grandchild Elizabeth Bradstreet, Who Deceased August, 1665, Being A Year and a Half Old
and On Being Brought From Africa To America. In Anne Bradstreet s, In Memory of My Dear
Grandchild Elizabeth Bradstreet, Who Deceased August, 1665, Being A Year and a Half Old,
nature and her notions implicatively insinuate tremendous grief of her granddaughter s death.
Bradstreet simply observe nature where plants and fruits grow and die in a comparison with her
grandchild s death (p.121 122) And time brings down what is both strong and tall. She withal
describes different times in accordance with God s will. Bradstreet compares nature to the death
of her granddaughter who was taken at an adolescent age. Being a Puritan she believes in God s
divine will and purport. In her poem she express the difficulties she face with her death. In the

Prohibition Of Drugs And Alcohol
Popular belief holds that consumption of drugs and alcohol encourages violence and that the
appropriate response is prohibition of these goods. However, a different viewpoint is that
prohibition creates illegal underground markets, which require violence and crime to remedy in
house disputes. This paper examines the relationship between prohibitionand violence using the
historical data and behavior following previous U.S. drugand alcohol laws, regulations, and
enforcement on indicators of violence, e.g. homicide rates, and government enforcement
expenditures. The results show that an increase in enforcement of drug and alcohol prohibition
laws have been positively associated with increases in the homicide rate. Furthermore,
supplementary evidence suggests this strong positive correlation prohibition enforcement on
violence and the overall crime rate.
I. Introduction
Is Prohibition actually successful in reducing recreational drug consumption and drug related
violence? This is the question that will be analyzed in this paper. Drug enforcement officials
frequently cite drug related violence as a reason that drugs must be eliminated from our society. A
contrary belief is that the system of drug prohibition actually causes most of the violence. Just like
with alcohol prohibition in the 1920s and the rise of organized crime, drug prohibition inspires a
dangerous underground market that manifests itself with violent crime throughout the U.S. and, in
fact, the

Self Concept Is Our Self Identity Essay
Self concept is our self identity, and is the way that one perceives itself, it includes both attitudes
and the collection of beliefs. Self Concept also branches out into self image and self esteem. Self
image, is the way the person pictures itself. The self esteem is the way we evaluate ourselves. We
identify ourselves by our communication, and our interactions with others. In other words I think,
therefore I am (RenГ© Descartes; ego cogito, ergo sum ) If a person was to tell another person
what they think they look like, odds are that that person may view himself as what the other person
thinks/views him as. It could either raise or lower the self esteemof the person, it could also
enhance the way we view ourselves, depending on the type of people the person associates,
communicates and experience interactions with them. If a person associates himself or herself
with educated people, he or she will most likely feel respected. If he or she associates with people
of less morals, odds are that that person may just have a lower self esteem and self image
compared to the person that hangs around overall good people.
It is believed that developing a self concept is essential to perform well in the work place. A work
place involves a constant interaction between its workers and environment, communication. Believe
it or not communication and self esteem are related, we perceive ourselves based on our own
experiences and communication with others. The people one is surrounded by

(skinny) is only to paint details onto the cake, there are too many brushes that you can use. The
cake slicers are used to divide a cake layer for torting (torting means splitting or cutting the layers of
your cake). Cutters are available to create accents for cakes; cutters cut gum paste and make it into

This book is easy to understand because it shows pictures of the tools and explains what the tools

The Sound Of Music Analysis
Feminism is a hot topic in popular culture, politics, and education today. It is rare to see
historical examples of feminism because previously feminine characteristics and lifestyles were
defined by societal standards. Few women dared to break these predefined stereotypes. The
Sound of Music is a classic film from 1965, which is known for its portrayal of the Von Trap
Family Singers preceding World War II. Although the film has multiple serious elements it is also
refreshingly humorous to see the main character Marie stick out wherever she goes with her unique
take on life. The iconic film starring Julie Andrews has many parallels with the story of Heloise
because both these women broke the parameters of feminism during their time. The Sound... Show

Many modern books, television shows, and movies adapt this radical idea of passionate love,
but I want to focus on the female lead herself, Heloise. In many ways Heloise and Marie make
strides in newly defining the roles of females and opening up the realm of possibility challenging
that all females are not the silent, obedient, housewife types. Although they both are similar by
challenging traditional stereotypes they go about it in entirely different ways. One similarity is
that both Marie and Heloise fall in love with their superiors. Heloise falls for her tutor and Marie
falls for the Captain who is technically her boss. Secondly, in personality they both defy normal
feminine characteristics. For instance, Marie sometimes behaves more childlike trying to instill
more fun and laughter in life rather than being a strict caretaker like the Captain would like.
Heloise valued knowledge and love, but not the traditional sense of love where a woman longs to be
a wife and mother. She longed for a more passionate love free from the constraints of marriage. This
example shows that neither of the women were traditional thinkers, but they were not necessarily
the same either. In the Sound of Music when the Captain is predestined to marry the Baroness, it
is obvious that like Heloise Marie is not simply at the Von Trap household to get married unlike
the Baroness. On the contrary, her only intention was to care for the children and get back to the
abbey not fall in love. Both women seemed to unexpectedly found love with men who have very
strong personalities. For example the Captain was very strict, rigid, and harsh because of military
training, which doesn t quite fit with Marie s personality. Heloise ends up falling for a very
intelligent arrogant man, but just like the Captain both of these men are positively impacted by these

Arguments Against Humanitarian Intervention
Humanitarian intervention is a doctrine that advocates the opportunity to send humanitarian relief
and international armed forces to help the victims of natural disasters or violations of human rights
without the consent of the State concerned. The objective is to rescue, assist, assist and protect
people in danger. This idea has appeared on the occasion of the Biafran War (1967 1970) which
resulted in a terrible famine, but had been ignored by other States in the name of neutrality and non
interference. The term humanitarian intervention was invented in the late 1980s by Bernard
Kouchner, founder of Doctors Without Borders and politician, and Mario Bettati, Professor of
Public International Law. According to them, some emergencies can morally justify a duty to
intervene in the affairs of a state, thus calling into question the principle of sovereignty.... Show

Human Rights To his supporters, it is however legitimate that if there is massive violation of human
rights and that if it is framed by a supranational organization, essentially the United Nations
Security Council.
In the debates raised by humanitarian intervention raises the question of the need to create a new
right of intervention in humanitarian terms when there is already a binding law (Geneva
Conventions, the Convention against Genocide) and the UN Charter, in Chapter VII, allows
intervention in the internal affairs of a State in the case of threat against peace. Among the other
issues raised, there those actors interference (NGOs, international and intergovernmental
organizations, States ...), as well as its extension to other areas: democratic interference, judicial
interference, environmental

Relevance Of Mythology And Mythology
Mythology is a term widely used for the study of myths, the stories, the beliefs, the understanding of
the world through certain aspects narrated in oral tales to teach values and ethics to the society.
However, one does not find myth in contemporary times rather it is a subject of the past of which
no one is a witness. These mythical tales have been passed down through generations never actually
knowing the origin of its creation. Myth usually has connotations of falsehood, unreasonable,
irrationality which makes the stories and the past related to it a mere lie or fiction. But if myth is
fictitious, then how could it serve the purpose of educating the masses about moral values and
ethics? During the 20th century, many researchers started coming up with their views on the
rationality of mythological stories. The revised definition of myth said that myth is the... Show more

The goal of this paper is to bring Linear Algebra and Digital Signal Processing together for
efficiently solving the applied signal processing problems. Linear Algebra tool box is created to
visualize the signal by just clicking and dragging the concerned module. In MATLAB and other
platforms, tapping of the signals cannot be done and conventional code has to be written for
solving the problem. GNU Radio is a freeware software for processing signals through which
tapping of signal can be done .The module is created in GNU Radio with predefined template and
the platform used here is C++.Further, the code is glued to Python using swig. The blocks are
created in order to estimate energy, check orthogonality, compute unit normalization, find Euclidean
norm of a signal and least square fitting. The end user can visualize the signal in various plots.
KEYWORDS: Linear Algebra, GNU Radio, MATLAB.

Lab Partners: Kaliah Goodman, Howsikan Kugathasan, and Suntesia Bowen
Date of Laboratory: September 21, 2016
Goal of Laboratory:
The goal of this laboratory was to successfully make a gel and to run an SDS PAGE and determine
molecular weight (MW) of an unknown protein sample by comparing it to Log10 of the migration
of molecular weight of the standards.
Background:
The purpose of SDS PAGEis to separate proteins according to their size, and no other physical
feature. SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) is a detergent (soap) that can dissolve hydrophobic
molecules but also has a negative charge (sulfate) attached to it. Therefore, if a cell is incubated
with SDS, the membranes will be dissolved, all the proteins will ... Show more content on

Therefore, if we had many copies of two different proteins that were both 298 amino acids long,
they would travel together through the gel in a mixed band. As a result, we would not be able
to use SDS PAGE to separate these two proteins of the same molecular weight from each other.
Some possible errors that occurred during this lab include poorly executing inserting the MW
marker solution into the well of the gel. This caused not so clear bands as shown in figure 1.
Incorrect measurements of the migration could also lead to errors in the data. The molecular
weight of the protein was determined by plotting a graph of the Log MW vs migration (cm) and
generating a standard curve. The unknown sample molecular weight was calculated as 79.43 kD.
Experimental errors in this lab could be minimized by carefully loading the wells on the

Superpowers During The Cold War
During the Cold War 1947 1991, over the course of forty four years was a political and military
tension between the two powers of the Communist bloc (Eastern bloc) and the Capitalist bloc
(Western bloc). The Eastern bloc dominated by the Soviet Union along with the Warsaw pact and
states aligned with the Soviet unionrefers to the to the former communist state of Central and
Eastern Europe. The Western bloc was dominated by the USA with NATO along with its allies and
refers to countries allied with the United States and NATO against the Soviet union and its allies.
The potential dangers of superpower conflict in the nuclear age were demonstrated by the Cuban
Missile Crisis that developed in 1962. That was the first time during the cold war the USA and the
Soviet Union faced each other in direct conflict. This essay will focus on the factors that lead to
the high political tension between the two superpowers and how this conflict had almost brought
the USA and USSR into a ground war and worst of all into a nuclear war.
The origins of this conflict lays behind many events that happened in Cuba since 1959 when the
Cuban Revolution occurred. That meant the spread of communism in South America and the US
understood that the U.S.S.R will be supporting the revolution in Cuba and they will take advantage
of the situation to expand their sphere of influence.
Since the end of Spanish rule, Cuba have been under US influence. Its proximity to the USA was

Divine Fate In Oedipus The King
Throughout history philosophers and common men have wondered where they fit in the world.
Ideas of divine guidance and self made men are prevalent in many societies dating back to pre
biblical times. These ideas are explored in Sophocles Oedipus The King as Oedipus runs from his
destiny only to come full circle to the gods plans for him. The symbolic and literal struggle of
Oedipusfate puts into perspective the limits of free will and how much is pre determined.
Working through the text, it is first clear that the gods are rerouting Oedipus to meet the truth. The
curse Apollo places on Thebes initiates the search for Laios murderer, opening the gate for
Oedipus to discover the truth. Interestingly enough, the curse is not placed until years after the
murder took place, which makes it seem as if the gods wished for Oedipus to think he had
escaped his fate only to be shown the fragility of his perceived free will. Not only does Oedipus
take interest in solving the crime, but note the irony in his words even if god had not forced the
issue, (Line 307) when the reader knows full well this is the gods doing all along. He goes on to
curse the man saying, He is our sickness. He poisons us...be cursed with a life as evil as he is
(Line 292 299). This is all truly pulling to read, knowing as the reader that he condemns himself.
Perhaps Oedipus s false illusion of being in control is reflective of the idea that in our own lives.
We have no control over how what we say about other people may fall back on ourselves. Our
very lives may fall to where we least wish them to be, to a place we would unknowingly despise.
The next indicator of Oedipus limited range of free will and ultimate downfall is the speech of
Tiresias. Although he may be blind he has insight into the will of the gods and he knows of
Oedipus darkness. He possesses the knowledge to destroy Oedipus reality, and by extension his
freedom to live his life. In an effort to spare him, Tiresias refuses to speak knowing that the most
terrible knowledge is the kind it pays no wise man to possess. (Line 383) The key point to be made
is that the idea of free will in Oedipus life is that of ignorance. The burden of the truth of his pre
destined fate is one

Shadows In The Tell Tale Heart
Edgar Allan Poe a man vailed in shadows. The story The Tell Tale Heart was no exception. This
story seemingly simple after the first read, however it is suggested that there are many deep
secrets hiding in the shadows of this dark tale. The eyes are the windows to the soul, and time
seems to slow during moments of terrible stress. In this day and age, we often forget to look
closely at the simplest of things nearest us: the eyes of a companion, or a roommate, or a peer,
and try to peer into the window of their souls. This window can provide a crucial clue for the
intentions and perceptions of these close friends. However, constantly these flags and signs are

However, as the story unfolds the narrator s lack of mental prowess becomes plausible. This is
how the themes of the tale become known. The unnamed narrator thinks he is the protagonist
even though he brutally kills the old man. As the narrator s psychosis spirals out of control the
reader begins to see the reasons for his psychosis. The narrator kill the man, not for his eye, but
rather what he sees in the eye. Other than the narrator having some severe form of psychosis,
there are no valid reasons. Moreover, the eye triggered these violent acts, but killing a person in
such an awful way should not be brought about by a man s eye. The narrator spend a great deal
of time, trying, convincing the reader that he is not mad. The evil that worked its way out of the
narrator will no doubt face the gallows. He tells us that he loved the old man but, the eye that had

The Main Features of the Reforms Passed by the Government in the 19th Century that Affected
Prisons
As we can see from question one prisons needed serious reform. This is because the purpose of
prison was to hold people until they were hung or transported therefore no one cared about
reforming them. So the purpose of prisons has to change for the conditions to change. This is
because if the purpose changes from holding prisoners till death to holding prisoners until there
sentence is up people will put more effort into reforming them so the conditions will get better and

they were still tret like prisoners. They did not pay for any of these items and the jailer was not

punishments consisted of no visitors at all, and hard labour and probably the worst punishment of
all solitary confinement. Each prisoner had their own cell and the chaplain and doctor visited
regularly to check on the prisoners and try to reform them through God. The warden had to visit at
least once a day to check on the prisoners and exercise them.
Sir George Paul although he only reformed one prison set the way for others to follow in his
footsteps and reform other prisons.
Elizabeth Fry was the next reformer who formed an association called the Association for the

What Were The Causes Of The Red River Rebellion In Canada
During the past years, The events known as the Red River rebellion occurred. The Red River
rebellion was caused when Canada gained a lot of land in Rupert s Land, this scared a lot of us as
we feared for our culture, and land rights under the control of the Canadiens. Because of this, we
banded together to create a provisional government to make terms for entering their colony. This
created the province of Manitoba, a new name for the same home.
In, 1812 Scottish settlers created our colony at the junction of two rivers. In, 1836 the population
was mostly French and English MГ©tis and HBC owned our land.
The rebellion started in 1850 when the rule of the Hudson s bay company was threatened (under
attack) by the British, the Canadians, and the Americans. In 1860 they were readying to sell Rupert
s land and the Northwest to Canada, this included us. While Canada and the Hudson s Bay

Without an ERP solution in place, creating that kind of cross departmental coordination and
workflow execution can be quite challenging. * Another reason an ERP solution is so critical is
their ability to increase information consistency and accuracy. Many companies still suffer from
multiple versions of the truth incorrect and inconsistent information across the business. For
example, if the accounting department and the contact center access two different databases which
aren t integrated, a customer with a billing question will likely get an inaccurate answer if they
call the contact center for assistance. These problems, although they may appear small on the
surface, can add up, leading to bigger customer satisfaction and retention issues that can negatively
impact revenues and market share. * In today s dynamic and highly competitive marketplace, it
can seriously hinder productivity, profitability, and growth. The primary reason an ERP solution is
so vital to a company s success is efficiency. Cumbersome, error prone, labor intensive manual
processes can drain both time and money. Businesses must operate as lean as possible in order to

enthusiasm is sparkling, and they show enormous productivity. And...they re desperate for money,
of course. They ground their financial needs and we see that without investments they can t move
further. Investors believe in their idea and business model, and everybody admires their inspiration.

In other words, after receiving funds, startup teams have lost their interest to their business started
initially as a hobby. But how can this happen? Teams get money (=resource and awards), so after
signing investment contract productivity should increase, as investors expect?
Unfortunately, even there s a short peak of productivity, it often goes down soon. Like in
experiment with gift and no gift tasks held by Gneezy, effort and productivity increases for a short
time, then it wanes quickly.
What if investors trying to minimize their risks are giving very little funds, exactly as much as
business support requires but not more? Experiments by Heyman amp; Ariely (2004) found that
low monetary payment decreases effort relative to no payment.
To my opinion, the key reasons of change in behavior are the following: 1) funds given are
adding market factor to the team s activity, 2) people don t have a fear to loose investors funds
(they burn that money before the business will be considered as success or failure), 3) they don t
have a feeling of social attachment and personal responsibility and perceive investor as a person
on the other side of barricade .

Motor Vehicle Accidents Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS)
Developing Personal Skills
The Australian government has applied the following to motor vehicle accidents Graduated
Licensing Scheme (GLS) teaches correct road practices along with K 10 mandatory education
RTA as well as Driver, Reviver Stops provide information Behaviour modifications = wearing seat
belts, drink driving, speeding, driving when fatigued In Australia, the use of seat belts by all vehicle
passengers is compulsory. Although it has been compulsory to wear seatbelts in New South
Wales since 1971, each year on average there are more than 50 people killed and 300 injured who
were not wearing seatbelts. These deaths and injuries could have been prevented if seatbelts had
been used. Those caught driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the legal limit
face heavy fines, loss of license and, for the most serious offenders, possible ... Show more content

Strengthening Community Action People are motivated by increasing numbers of accidents
especially seen in the statistics of learners. Many people, including Rotary and Lions Clubs
volunteer because of this increase. Graduated Licensing Scheme is a source of the community
increasing learner, driver awareness As a driver grows in knowledge, skills and driving experience,
the restrictions are gradually lifted through the provisional stages (P1 and P2). The aim of the
ad Speeding no one thinks big of you was to make speeding socially unacceptable. In NSW,
speeding is a factor in about 40% of road deaths each year. From 2004 2008, there were 874
speeding related fatalities. Speeding is the biggest road safety issue and young males are at
greatest risk. The primary target audience for this campaign was male drivers 17 25 years;
however the campaign was able to reach the wider community as well.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Living Abroad
It is without doubt that for some people, going to a foreign country can be quite the shock. Before
I experienced living abroad, I was adamant that I too would experience a culture shock. What
happened was totally the opposite.
I spend my last year of my bachelor studies living in Belgium, Ghent. I received a scholarship, so I
did not have to work to support myself. Instedad I focused on my studies and of course on the
adventure. You see, cultureshock is not something you catch, like the flu or the common cold; it s
not something you get when you set foot on the airport, it s a feeling and it is not always there. If
I was in a more exotic place than Europe, I believe I would have had a minor culture shock, but
having to write about a culture shock I experienced during my stay in a European country is simply
impossible.

Not only you get to meet the tall, blond blue eyed Belgums. You get the Indians that run the nacht
winkels (night shops), the Arabs that sell kebabs and falafels in 24h restaurants on the party street ,
you get to meet all the other exchange students; the Italians and the Spanish and the Greek, and an
occasional Korean that thinks Bulgaria is still fighting the Balkan War.
One of the teachers that had a huge impact on my studies, and inspired me to continue studing
amerian literature and fired up my passion for slave narratives was an American Professor, that
was also an exchange teacher. A great example of the so elusive culture shock, is when he shared
his experience with the new country. What he said was that he expected something totally
different, you know with the wooden shoes and the mills . He was always surprised when he
heard a typically american song play on the radio in one of the cafes he visited, or when he
realized that there are a lot of American franchises like McDonalds, Starbucks and

Abolishment Of Slavery
I am well educated on slavery and the abolishment of it. I believe the abolishment of slavery
movement in the United States valued personal freedom and that all men are created equal. I also
believe that the movement grew more forceful leading slave owners to become stimulated which
led to the American Civil War.
One of the main reasons that slavery should be abolished is because of the people who own slaves
and how they treat them inhumanly. All humans are equal. When we use another individual as a
slave, it hurts humanity, more importantly, hurts the person who s serving as the slave. The slave
who didn t want to become the slave in the first place could have potentially became someone
important in the world. When we keep someone in captivity,

The Evolution of the Invisible Man in Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
In everyone s life, there are growing experiences. People evolve not only physically as they get
older but also ideologically. Perhaps they might become wiser or shrug off the trendy doctrines that
may have tried to shape their destiny long ago. Ralph Ellison illustrates this struggle of change in
Invisible Man. The novel begins with a naГЇve young, black man in the South caught under the evil
boot of racism. As the novel progresses, the reader sees that the ideas portrayed in the novel evolve
from inherently pro communism to anti communism by the ending. Although appears solely as a
diatribe against racism, it embodies an evolution of political thought and also ... Show more content

It was a hundred dollar bill.(Ellison 68).
This symbolizes how Norton is exploiting Trueblood. It is a protest against the exploitation of the
worker which is a very communist idea. In order to almost live the experience of perhaps
committing incest against his own daughter, Norton exploits Trueblood. In communist ideology,
Norton would perhaps embody the evil, corrupt capitalist taking advantage of the working class.
However, Norton is not the total capitalist that he perhaps embodies. After Ivan drops him off at
his rooms on the campus, Norton defends the narrator against Dr. Bledsoe s attacks. Dr. Bledsoe,
however, has his own designs, and even though he may appear as a friend of the worker, Bledsoe
is the true capitalist robber baron.
But I ve made my place in it and I ll have every Negro in the country hanging on tree limbs if it
means staying where I am. (Ellison 141). Bledsoe states that he will not stop at anything to assert
his own supremacy, even if it means stomping on his own race and setting back his people s
cause for ages. He believes himself to be the manifest of all authority and considers himself
supreme over everyone. Even though Bledsoe appears at first to be a servile man, he is deep inside
an insidious plotter and has designs on subverting the entire establishment for his own ends. He
intends to exploit his society and the common people, which is something communism is against. At

Coachella Valley Honor Band
During my junior year, all high school students of the Coachella Valley were given the opportunity
to audition for the All Coachella Valley Honor Band, with a guest conductor H. Robert Reynolds.
This was a significant educational opportunity I took advantage of. The audition consisted of a
couple of scales, and excerpts from the musicthat was going to be performed on the day of the
concert. When the day came I sat in front of the judge with my music and clarinet, where my
nerves began to rise. Before I began to play my heart began to pound along with my hands
beginning to sweat. Throughout my audition I had a few mistakes, but I stayed persistent and
completed my audition. After I finished my audition, the judge said I had done great, I was

The Cause Of Mary Todd s Tragedy
Even though Mary Todd had obtained her goal of becoming First Lady, in 1862 she was again
visited by tragedy. In the midst of the American Civil War during Abraham Lincoln s first term
in office, the beloved son of the President and First Lady, Willie, became ill with typhoid fever.
Disease ran rampant at the time and was often deadly, as it was in Willie s case. The Lincolns
were devastated by the loss and it was uncertain if Mary would recover. Willie s body was
embalmed in the White House s Green Room, which Mary would refuse to enter from that point on.
(Burlingame 250) Abraham Lincolnkept his mind busy with war matters in order to grieve Willie s
death. Mary Todd however fell into a deep depression and suffered for an extensive period

John Charles Fields Essay
John Charles Fields
John Charles Fields is perhaps one of the most famous Canadian Mathematicians of all time. He
was born on May 14, 1863 in Hamilton Ontario, and died August 9, 1932 in Toronto, Ontario
(Young, 1998). He graduated from the University of Toronto at the age of 21 with a B.A in
Mathematics and went on to get his Ph.D. at John Hopkins University in 1887. Fields was very
interested to study at John Hopkins University because apparently it was the only university in
North America which really stressed research at the time (Fields Institute, n.d.). Fields did original
research in the theory of algebraic functions that was influenced by his reknowned mentors, Fuchs,
Schwarz, Frobenius and Plank (Fields Medal, n.d.). After two ... Show more content on

I think it is great to know that one of the greatest mathematicians of all time is Canadian, because
most famous mathematicians are of European decent.
I think Fields lived a very interesting and dynamic life; he had a chance to pursue his dream of
research in mathematics and got to become lifelong friends with the famous mathematician Gosta
Mittag Leffler. As opposed to Alfred Nobel, Fields understood the importance of research in
mathematics and he did his best to support it and promote it. I think that is the reason why John
Charles Fields was able to take mathematics to a new level, because he was so dedicated and
passionate about his work.
Mathematics is used in many widely different contexts and it is used everyday, although most
people don t recognize that and I believe that the creation of the Fields medal was big step in the
mathematical universe. In January 1932, Fields indicated that the idea of the medal had the support
of the major mathematical societies of France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the United States,
and he also outlined the principles behind the proposed medal (Fields Institute, n.d). The first
Fields medal was awarded in Oslo in 1936. I think the implementation of the Fields medal was a
great idea because it served as a reward for outstanding mathematicians and it made mathematics
more recognized around the world.
Other than the Fields medal, I feel the creation of

  • 2. Gil Scott Heron Essay Gil Scott Heron BHSECQ Rahat Today, rap music is an ever growing genre of music that is often centered on hedonistic pursuits such as wealth, cars, drinks, and fame. About forty years ago, however, rap music focused on an entirely different subject matter. During the 1970s, African Americans sung rap songs to express the need for Black empowerment in society; though their form of singing was not called rapping back then, it was called spoken word poetry, a form of song in which verses of poetry were performed with a fixed beat before an audience. African Americans used this style of singing to express the discontent with the economics and politics during the 1970s. The black population was still economically and politically powerless... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The context and setting of this rap is American in the 1970 s. Historically, this period came after the Civil Rights Movement, during the start of the Nixon era. The Vietnam War was dividing the nation s population into anti war protestors and those that supported the war effort. It was an era of recession and continued change for minorities. One of the issues was enforced racial integration after the Civil Rights Movement, which many institutions had still not complied with. The struggle to find equality even after the movement was something African Americans at the time had to deal with. The support for the black power movement was one of many results of this struggle. The media and press largely did not report on the alienation that was still present. This was an inspiration for Scott Heron and this song in particular. Factual References in The Revolution Will Not be Televised Gil Scott Heron presents many references to the superficial media and policies that were at the time ignorant of the struggle of African American integration. His spoken word poetry describes these outlets of references before repeating the phrase The Revolution Will Not Be Televised... to strengthen the claim that the consumer media is superficially choosing to pretend that all was well when in fact a revolution was happening at their doorstep. • 5. Scarlet Ibis Symbolism Symbolism Used in The Scarlet Ibis In The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, Hurst uses the symbol of birds to further explain the theme of death in the story. Even from the very first paragraph, birds are used to foreshadow the ending of the story. Hurst illustrates, The five o clock by the chimney still marked time, but the oriole nest in the elm was untenanted and rocked back and forth like an empty cradle. (Hurst 1). In this sentence, Hurst is describing an Oriole birds nest that is sitting empty in a tree. This foreshadows the ending of the book by symbolizing Doodle s absence by the end of the story. Hurst again uses bird symbols in the story when he vividly describes, The bird began to flutter, but the wings were uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down, bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud. (Hurst 5). While telling the story of the ibis, Hurst is simultaneously describing Doodle s demise. Right before Doodle dies, he is attempting to catch up to his brother in the thunderstorm. Even though Doodle tries hard to catch up to his brother, much like the bird who is attempting to fly, Doodle s physical shortcomings cause him to fail. Hurst then directly relates Doodle s death to a bird when he is describing Doodle s death. Doodle s brother recounts, I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain. (Hurst 6). Hurst related Doodle s dead body to the dead ibis from earlier in the story. This metaphor seems to help his brother come to terms with what has happened. Although he had been cruel to him by running ahead of him, he is comforting Doodle now that he is dead. With that said, it is impossible to compare the context of research to those seen in professional practice. However, multiple studies agree that education plays a vital role in depression. Later on, guns got used for the wrongs reasons. More crimes were being develop, like the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Now, people want more restrictions on gun ownership and how it should be used. If some restrictions were to be made, some say it will not make much of a difference. • 13. Persuasive Essay On Volunteering eather French Henry once said, Volunteering is at the very core of being a human, no one has made it in life without someone else s help, (Volunteering Solutions 3). Similarly, the butterfly is a very small natural force which over a period of time gains a cumulatively large effect that produces great beauty. This phenomenon begins first with insurmountable struggles and works its way through a snarled mess of webbing and eventually takes flight. With every effort, the first step in volunteering is usually the hardest. However, once the intention is set, the flight of volunteering takes off. In fact, many scholars over the years have argued over how involved an individual should be in one s community. Some believe the largest reward a person can achieve from givingtheir time and money to the good of their community is the satisfaction, accomplishment, and pride that comes from within. Ultimately, an individual s role should be founded on one s ability to be impactful to their community, this impact can be quick or long lasting but in the end, the results of volunteering demonstrate leadership and stewardship which through example inspires others to do the same, creating a better place for all to live. The purpose of giving stems from the ability of each individual to be impactful with their own actions. Through the action of giving to one s community, the meaning of the action does not lie in how much money or how much volunteering is produced, rather how much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The design was an option of my choice, I had always wanted a rifle like this one. My rifle, in my opinion, has one of the most distinctive designs for a rifle. Starting at the stock of the gun, it was sleek, natural camouflage , synthetic stock. As you go up the gun, you arrive at the metal parts, and this matte finish of black really matched the stock, which gave it my attention as I focused on it at first glance. The barrel, at the peak of the gun adjacent to the opening system, was thick, so if I was to shoot multiple times in a row the barrel wouldn t warp after constant heating through the violent explosion of the cartridge as the bullets races through the end of the barrel. On the other hand, the bullet measurements were just as important. At the time I was given the gun, I wasn t very old or strong. There are two sources of the industry wide of competitive advantage, including cost advantage and differentiation advantage (Grant, paage178). From my analysis, Mondavi can apply both sources to use with its products, but it should use one competitive advantage at a time. For instance, according to exhibit 4 in Jug and pop pre segments, Woodbridge should be applied to the cost advantage because the price competition in this type of wine was very aggressive at that time. Thus, the company has to reduce costs to compete with other competitors. However, referring to exhibit 4 in luxury prem segment, the company should apply the differentiation advantage for Robert Mondavi (RM)Winery and RM Coastal Private Selection because these two brands target the high end customers caring for the quality rather than the price. This paper examines the relationship between prohibitionand violence using the historical data and behavior following previous U.S. drugand alcohol laws, regulations, and enforcement on indicators of violence, e.g. homicide rates, and government enforcement expenditures. The results show that an increase in enforcement of drug and alcohol prohibition laws have been positively associated with increases in the homicide rate. Furthermore, supplementary evidence suggests this strong positive correlation prohibition enforcement on violence and the overall crime rate. I. Introduction Is Prohibition actually successful in reducing recreational drug consumption and drug related violence? This is the question that will be analyzed in this paper. Drug enforcement officials frequently cite drug related violence as a reason that drugs must be eliminated from our society. A contrary belief is that the system of drug prohibition actually causes most of the violence. Self Concept also branches out into self image and self esteem. Self image, is the way the person pictures itself. The self esteem is the way we evaluate ourselves. We identify ourselves by our communication, and our interactions with others. In other words I think, therefore I am (RenГ© Descartes; ego cogito, ergo sum ) If a person was to tell another person what they think they look like, odds are that that person may view himself as what the other person thinks/views him as. It could either raise or lower the self esteemof the person, it could also enhance the way we view ourselves, depending on the type of people the person associates, communicates and experience interactions with them. If a person associates himself or herself with educated people, he or she will most likely feel respected. If he or she associates with people of less morals, odds are that that person may just have a lower self esteem and self image compared to the person that hangs around overall good people. It is believed that developing a self concept is essential to perform well in the work place. A work place involves a constant interaction between its workers and environment, communication. Heloise falls for her tutor and Marie falls for the Captain who is technically her boss. Secondly, in personality they both defy normal feminine characteristics. For instance, Marie sometimes behaves more childlike trying to instill more fun and laughter in life rather than being a strict caretaker like the Captain would like. Heloise valued knowledge and love, but not the traditional sense of love where a woman longs to be a wife and mother. She longed for a more passionate love free from the constraints of marriage. This example shows that neither of the women were traditional thinkers, but they were not necessarily the same either. In the Sound of Music when the Captain is predestined to marry the Baroness, it is obvious that like Heloise Marie is not simply at the Von Trap household to get married unlike the Baroness. On the contrary, her only intention was to care for the children and get back to the abbey not fall in love. Both women seemed to unexpectedly found love with men who have very strong personalities. For example the Captain was very strict, rigid, and harsh because of military training, which doesn t quite fit with Marie s personality. Heloise ends up falling for a very intelligent arrogant man, but just like the Captain both of these men are positively impacted by these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Arguments Against Humanitarian Intervention Humanitarian intervention is a doctrine that advocates the opportunity to send humanitarian relief and international armed forces to help the victims of natural disasters or violations of human rights without the consent of the State concerned. The objective is to rescue, assist, assist and protect people in danger. This idea has appeared on the occasion of the Biafran War (1967 1970) which resulted in a terrible famine, but had been ignored by other States in the name of neutrality and non interference. The term humanitarian intervention was invented in the late 1980s by Bernard Kouchner, founder of Doctors Without Borders and politician, and Mario Bettati, Professor of Public International Law. According to them, some emergencies can morally justify a duty to intervene in the affairs of a state, thus calling into question the principle of sovereignty.... • 22. Relevance Of Mythology And Mythology Mythology is a term widely used for the study of myths, the stories, the beliefs, the understanding of the world through certain aspects narrated in oral tales to teach values and ethics to the society. However, one does not find myth in contemporary times rather it is a subject of the past of which no one is a witness. These mythical tales have been passed down through generations never actually knowing the origin of its creation. Myth usually has connotations of falsehood, unreasonable, irrationality which makes the stories and the past related to it a mere lie or fiction. But if myth is fictitious, then how could it serve the purpose of educating the masses about moral values and ethics? During the 20th century, many researchers started coming up with their views on the rationality of mythological stories. The revised definition of myth said that myth is the... Background: The purpose of SDS PAGEis to separate proteins according to their size, and no other physical feature. Some possible errors that occurred during this lab include poorly executing inserting the MW marker solution into the well of the gel. This caused not so clear bands as shown in figure 1. Incorrect measurements of the migration could also lead to errors in the data. That was the first time during the cold war the USA and the Soviet Union faced each other in direct conflict. This essay will focus on the factors that lead to the high political tension between the two superpowers and how this conflict had almost brought the USA and USSR into a ground war and worst of all into a nuclear war. The origins of this conflict lays behind many events that happened in Cuba since 1959 when the Cuban Revolution occurred. That meant the spread of communism in South America and the US understood that the U.S.S.R will be supporting the revolution in Cuba and they will take advantage of the situation to expand their sphere of influence. • 28. Divine Fate In Oedipus The King Throughout history philosophers and common men have wondered where they fit in the world. Ideas of divine guidance and self made men are prevalent in many societies dating back to pre biblical times. These ideas are explored in Sophocles Oedipus The King as Oedipus runs from his destiny only to come full circle to the gods plans for him. The symbolic and literal struggle of Oedipusfate puts into perspective the limits of free will and how much is pre determined. Working through the text, it is first clear that the gods are rerouting Oedipus to meet the truth. The curse Apollo places on Thebes initiates the search for Laios murderer, opening the gate for Oedipus to discover the truth. Interestingly enough, the curse is not placed until years after the murder took place, which makes it seem as if the gods wished for Oedipus to think he had escaped his fate only to be shown the fragility of his perceived free will. Not only does Oedipus take interest in solving the crime, but note the irony in his words even if god had not forced the issue, (Line 307) when the reader knows full well this is the gods doing all along. He goes on to curse the man saying, He is our sickness. He poisons us...be cursed with a life as evil as he is (Line 292 299). This is all truly pulling to read, knowing as the reader that he condemns himself. Perhaps Oedipus s false illusion of being in control is reflective of the idea that in our own lives. We have no control over how what we say about other people may fall back on ourselves. Our very lives may fall to where we least wish them to be, to a place we would unknowingly despise. The next indicator of Oedipus limited range of free will and ultimate downfall is the speech of Tiresias. Although he may be blind he has insight into the will of the gods and he knows of Oedipus darkness. He possesses the knowledge to destroy Oedipus reality, and by extension his freedom to live his life. In an effort to spare him, Tiresias refuses to speak knowing that the most terrible knowledge is the kind it pays no wise man to possess. (Line 383) The key point to be made is that the idea of free will in Oedipus life is that of ignorance. The burden of the truth of his pre destined fate is one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Living Abroad It is without doubt that for some people, going to a foreign country can be quite the shock. Before I experienced living abroad, I was adamant that I too would experience a culture shock. What happened was totally the opposite. I spend my last year of my bachelor studies living in Belgium, Ghent. I received a scholarship, so I did not have to work to support myself. Instedad I focused on my studies and of course on the adventure. You see, cultureshock is not something you catch, like the flu or the common cold; it s not something you get when you set foot on the airport, it s a feeling and it is not always there. If I was in a more exotic place than Europe, I believe I would have had a minor culture shock, but having to write about a culture shock I experienced during my stay in a European country is simply impossible. You get the Indians that run the nacht winkels (night shops), the Arabs that sell kebabs and falafels in 24h restaurants on the party street , you get to meet all the other exchange students; the Italians and the Spanish and the Greek, and an occasional Korean that thinks Bulgaria is still fighting the Balkan War. One of the teachers that had a huge impact on my studies, and inspired me to continue studing amerian literature and fired up my passion for slave narratives was an American Professor, that was also an exchange teacher. A great example of the so elusive culture shock, is when he shared his experience with the new country. What he said was that he expected something totally different, you know with the wooden shoes and the mills . He was always surprised when he heard a typically american song play on the radio in one of the cafes he visited, or when he realized that there are a lot of American franchises like McDonalds, Starbucks and ... • 43. Abolishment Of Slavery I am well educated on slavery and the abolishment of it. I believe the abolishment of slavery movement in the United States valued personal freedom and that all men are created equal. I also believe that the movement grew more forceful leading slave owners to become stimulated which led to the American Civil War. One of the main reasons that slavery should be abolished is because of the people who own slaves and how they treat them inhumanly. All humans are equal. When we use another individual as a slave, it hurts humanity, more importantly, hurts the person who s serving as the slave. The slave who didn t want to become the slave in the first place could have potentially became someone important in the world. When we keep someone in captivity, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The Evolution of the Invisible Man in Invisible Man by... The Evolution of the Invisible Man in Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison In everyone s life, there are growing experiences. People evolve not only physically as they get older but also ideologically. Perhaps they might become wiser or shrug off the trendy doctrines that may have tried to shape their destiny long ago. Ralph Ellison illustrates this struggle of change in Invisible Man. The novel begins with a naГЇve young, black man in the South caught under the evil boot of racism. As the novel progresses, the reader sees that the ideas portrayed in the novel evolve from inherently pro communism to anti communism by the ending. Although appears solely as a diatribe against racism, it embodies an evolution of political thought and also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was a hundred dollar bill.(Ellison 68). This symbolizes how Norton is exploiting Trueblood. It is a protest against the exploitation of the worker which is a very communist idea. In order to almost live the experience of perhaps committing incest against his own daughter, Norton exploits Trueblood. In communist ideology, Norton would perhaps embody the evil, corrupt capitalist taking advantage of the working class. However, Norton is not the total capitalist that he perhaps embodies. After Ivan drops him off at his rooms on the campus, Norton defends the narrator against Dr. Bledsoe s attacks. Dr. Bledsoe, however, has his own designs, and even though he may appear as a friend of the worker, Bledsoe is the true capitalist robber baron. But I ve made my place in it and I ll have every Negro in the country hanging on tree limbs if it means staying where I am. (Ellison 141). Bledsoe states that he will not stop at anything to assert his own supremacy, even if it means stomping on his own race and setting back his people s cause for ages. He believes himself to be the manifest of all authority and considers himself supreme over everyone. Even though Bledsoe appears at first to be a servile man, he is deep inside an insidious plotter and has designs on subverting the entire establishment for his own ends. He intends to exploit his society and the common people, which is something communism is against. At ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Coachella Valley Honor Band During my junior year, all high school students of the Coachella Valley were given the opportunity to audition for the All Coachella Valley Honor Band, with a guest conductor H. Robert Reynolds. This was a significant educational opportunity I took advantage of. The audition consisted of a couple of scales, and excerpts from the musicthat was going to be performed on the day of the concert. When the day came I sat in front of the judge with my music and clarinet, where my nerves began to rise. Before I began to play my heart began to pound along with my hands beginning to sweat. Throughout my audition I had a few mistakes, but I stayed persistent and completed my audition. After I finished my audition, the judge said I had done great, I was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Cause Of Mary Todd s Tragedy Even though Mary Todd had obtained her goal of becoming First Lady, in 1862 she was again visited by tragedy. In the midst of the American Civil War during Abraham Lincoln s first term in office, the beloved son of the President and First Lady, Willie, became ill with typhoid fever. Disease ran rampant at the time and was often deadly, as it was in Willie s case. The Lincolns were devastated by the loss and it was uncertain if Mary would recover. Willie s body was embalmed in the White House s Green Room, which Mary would refuse to enter from that point on. • 47. John Charles Fields Essay John Charles Fields John Charles Fields is perhaps one of the most famous Canadian Mathematicians of all time. He was born on May 14, 1863 in Hamilton Ontario, and died August 9, 1932 in Toronto, Ontario (Young, 1998). He graduated from the University of Toronto at the age of 21 with a B.A in Mathematics and went on to get his Ph.D. at John Hopkins University in 1887. Fields was very interested to study at John Hopkins University because apparently it was the only university in North America which really stressed research at the time (Fields Institute, n.d.). Fields did original research in the theory of algebraic functions that was influenced by his reknowned mentors, Fuchs, Schwarz, Frobenius and Plank (Fields Medal, n.d.). After two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think it is great to know that one of the greatest mathematicians of all time is Canadian, because most famous mathematicians are of European decent. I think Fields lived a very interesting and dynamic life; he had a chance to pursue his dream of research in mathematics and got to become lifelong friends with the famous mathematician Gosta Mittag Leffler. As opposed to Alfred Nobel, Fields understood the importance of research in mathematics and he did his best to support it and promote it. I think that is the reason why John Charles Fields was able to take mathematics to a new level, because he was so dedicated and passionate about his work. Mathematics is used in many widely different contexts and it is used everyday, although most people don t recognize that and I believe that the creation of the Fields medal was big step in the mathematical universe. In January 1932, Fields indicated that the idea of the medal had the support of the major mathematical societies of France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the United States, and he also outlined the principles behind the proposed medal (Fields Institute, n.d). The first Fields medal was awarded in Oslo in 1936. I think the implementation of the Fields medal was a great idea because it served as a reward for outstanding mathematicians and it made mathematics more recognized around the world. Other than the Fields medal, I feel the creation of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
