Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and fellow Harvard students. It originally started as a platform for Harvard students but expanded to other universities. By 2006, it allowed people in work networks to join and by 2012 it reached 1 billion active monthly users globally. However, privacy has long been a concern with Facebook as many users, especially teens, share personal information publicly like their cell phone number, school, and location. Several studies found that a significant portion of Facebook users have not checked their privacy settings. Facebook also faced criticism over changes to privacy policies and features involving facial recognition and data sharing.
