3. COLOR TERMS
• Irridescent -a lustrous rainbow like play of color caused
by differential reflection of light waves
• Bright- high saturation or brilliance
• Intense - existing in an extreme degree
• Primary -not derivable from other colors, odors, or tastes
• Color- the aspect of objects and light sources that may
be described in terms of hue, lightness, and saturation
• Hue –the color attribute that classes them as red, yellow,
green, blue, or an intermediate
• Intermediate Color- hue between any nearby pair of
these colors

day/ warm climates. From seeds of cotton plant.

• Green : 78% of all US cotton is from green genetically
modified cotton, (Monsanto’s INGARD)

4. DIRECT PRINT TYPES, pigment applied directly to the fabric
a) Stamp / Block Print
b) Flat Bed print / Screen print (Toile de Jouy-ca. 1800 /1760 in France)
c) Roller Print (History- machine invented in 1783 by Thomas Bell in Scotland.)
& Duplex Print/ double sided roller print.
d) Warp /Shadow Prints, creates soft, hazy design, printed on warp only (EX. Orig.
IKAT)
e) Resist PRINT- resist then design, then remove resist for white(ex: tie-dye or
batik)

9. DESIGN TERMS
• Dominant -being the more effective or predominant in visual appeal.
• Design Repeat – an entire design that continuously repeats, larger
wallpaper or textile design patterns
• Stripes -a line or long narrow section differing in color or texture from
parts adjoining
• Squares -having a shape that is broad for the height and rectangular
rather than curving in outline
• Side by Side -next to
• Alternating -occurring or succeeding by turns
• Geometric -utilizing rectilinear or simple curvilinear motifs or outlines
in design
• Floral -a design, pattern, or picture in which flowers predominate

11. DESIGN TERMS
• Linear -involving a single dimension
• Naturalistic -constituting a classification based on features existing in
nature
• Stylized -to represent or design according to a style or stylistic rather
than according to nature or tradition
• Alternating design -every other
• Symmetrical design -being such that the terms or variables may be
interchanged without altering the balance
• Asymmetrical / unbalanced design - to be out of balance or irregular.
• Radial Design -developing uniformly around a central axis
• Central Motif- a dominant idea or repeat image
• Medallion - a design figure floating on an open ground, to stand out in
relief or to be seen as ornament

12. COLOR TERMS
• Toned- color quality or value; a tint or shade of
color; white or black that modifies a hue Ex.- gray
green walls
• Pale -deficient in color or intensity of color
• Dark -Shade -a color produced by a pigment or
dye mixture having some black in
• Neutral - not decided or pronounced as to
dominant characteristics
• Color Gradation -a gradual passing from one tint or
shade to another
