3D printing is a very popular subject nowadays and is often referred to as the next industrial revolution. But this revolution is proclaimed more by its observers than by its practitioners. The real revolution lies is the more fundamental principle of machines that are capable of turning data into things and things into data. Fab Labs The concept of a Fab Lab is to empower people to solve local and personal problems with Digital Fabrication technologies by providing them with a low-threshold access to the technology and a safe place for experiments an development.

The influence of networks is increasing. Online platforms are gaining importance. Think of disruptive players like Alibaba. Based on these insights Xavier and Lien have (re)launched bAUCTION in March 2015. bAUCTION is a B2B e-trading platform. An online marketplace acting as a connector for professional buyers and sellers only (manufacturers, wholesales, retail, ...). Based on the conviction that the network (also in B2B) is always winning... Mission? Connecting the dots in the professional trading market. Approach? Personal, safe and focussed on usability. This is the presentation that was given on March 19 at E-shop Expo in Brussels by Xavier and Lien.

The Digital Arts and Humanities PhD Structured Programme welcomed Dr Eoin O'Dell to the Royal Irish Academy for a discussion on all things "copyright" for the digital arts and humanities. Abstract: Copyright functions both to enable and to curtail the development of digital arts and humanities. On the one hand, it incentives and rewards the creation of original literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works, sound recordings, films, and so on. On the other hand, by protecting such works, it precludes derivative works and downstream innovation. This talk will look at the extent to which copyright legislation in Ireland and Europe achieves an appropriate balance between these two competing ends, and at whether currently mooted reform proposals are likely to improve that balance.

A key challenge we face at Pacmed is quickly calibrating and deploying our tools for clinical decision support in different hospitals, where data formats may vary greatly. Using Intensive Care Units as a case study, I’ll delve into our scalable Python pipeline, which leverages Pandas’ split-apply-combine approach to perform complex feature engineering and automatic quality checks on large time-varying data, e.g. vital signs.
