UH-Maui College Wins DOE Grant for Renewable Energy Charging of Rental Electr...UCSD-Strategic-Energy
DOE Planning Grant for Electric Vehicles Awarded to UHMC and DBEDT
The Department of Energy has awarded nearly $300,000 to University of Hawaiʻi Maui College—in partnership with the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT)—to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Hawaiʻi. UHMC was the only college or university that received a community planning grant in this initiative. “Our strategy,” says Susan Wyche, UHMC Special Projects Coordinator, “is to capitalize on Maui’s unique features that will support the mass adoption of electric vehicles, such as our short driving distances, high cost of gasoline, and the large number of rental vehicles that make up our vehicle population. Our goal is to have the highest EV ownership per capita in the world, and to combine that with the greatest percentage of fossil free sources to charge those EVs. Maui will serve as a case study for other islands in Hawaii, and the world.”
The strategy required extensive recruiting of partners willing to dedicate personnel time to the planning process. Over 30 partners will participate, including car rental companies and car dealers, resort hotels, utility companies, local and state environmental agencies, organizations with large vehicle fleets, and renewable energy producers. In addition, UHMC will be consulting with the University of California San Diego and San Diego Regional Clean Fuels Coalition, which have been national leaders in developing renewable energy resources, innovative policies, and studies on consumer use of electric vehicles.
“We worked with UH Maui College to get this grant because Maui is an ideal location for EV adoption. Maui attracts some two million visitors per year, and 85 percent of these use rental cars. Visitors and local people can test drive the cars; this will help them decide whether they would like to become EV owners. Many Maui resorts are putting in charging stations, so the infrastructure will be available. And EVs can be plugged in at night to use Maui-generated wind energy, which is usually most available in the evenings,” said Estrella Seese, acting administrator of DBEDT’s Energy Office.
The connection to renewable energy is key for the project, because the goal is not just to encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles—which would only mean exchanging where the fuel is burned from the combustible engine to the central energy plant—but to power the vehicles through renewable energy. “This grant fits with the College’s goals of providing leadership in sustainable solutions for island-based economies,” says Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto, “We look forward to cooperatively spearheading this effort which will contribute to our independence from imported fuels.”
The document summarizes a student project on desalination of saline water using solar energy. The project aims to study the effect of various parameters like water depth, salt concentration, temperature, and wind velocity on the rates of evaporation and condensation in a solar desalination system. The project scope involves designing a low-cost solar still that uses locally available materials and requires no external power. Experiments will be conducted to collect data on evaporation and condensation rates under different conditions and the quality of produced water will be analyzed.
The document provides an overview of solar energy, including its sources and applications. Some key points:
- Solar energy comes from the sun's radiation and more energy from the sun hits the Earth in one second than what humanity has used since the beginning of time.
- This energy can be harnessed through passive solar techniques like building orientation or active solar technologies like solar panels that directly convert sunlight to electricity.
- Solar energy has various applications from water heating to generating electricity and powering devices. It is a renewable source that produces no pollution.
- Technologies to capture solar energy effectively have advanced, making it more viable to harvest and use, though upfront costs remain high for some applications.
The document discusses various topics related to the transfer of heat, including:
1. The three main modes of heat transfer are conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction involves the transfer of heat between particles without particle movement, convection involves heat transfer via actual particle movement, and radiation transfers heat directly via electromagnetic waves.
2. When thermal radiation falls on an object, it can be absorbed, transmitted, or reflected. The absorptance, transmittance, and reflectance of an object describe these properties.
3. Blackbody radiation follows several laws, including Wien's displacement law and Stefan's law. Wien's law states the wavelength of peak emission is inversely proportional to temperature,

Ro/Ro (Roll On Roll Off)
Flat Rack (standard container ship)
Sail away (Captain & Crew)
9. METHODS OF TRANSPORT
FLOAT ON FLOAT OFF CARRIERS
• Dockwise Yacht Transport
This carrier has a fleet of semi-submersible vessels that can take yachts up to 146
meters.
Once the vessel is semi-submerged your vessel floats on and divers begin the
fastening process. Once the deck is dry the yachts are secured for transport.
BOA – Beam overall
LOA – length overall, inclusive of platforms and all protrusions
Weight
Draft
Make & Model
HIN# or yacht name
10. METHODS OF TRANSPORT
LIFT ON LIFT OFF CARRIERS
• Dockwise Yacht Transport/ BBC Logistics & Chartering
• Yachtpath International
• Sevenstar Yacht Transport
These carriers have the capability of lifting your yacht on board their vessels with
specialized strapping and cranes.
Slings or straps are securely fastened around the yacht. The yacht is checked for
proper weight distribution and is then lifted on board the carrier and secured with a
cradle. The maximum size of a yacht these carriers can take varies but is usually
between 45-55 meters.
11. METHODS OF TRANSPORT
LIFT ON LIFT OFF CARRIERS (CONTINUED)
Height and Weight of the yacht plays a factor in the maximum meters
that can be accepted. Basic information that will be needed to ship your

These carriers also have height restrictions, while it varies by carrier, generally
anything over 14’ must be removed.
Basic information that will be needed to ship your yacht:
1. Dimensions – length x width x height. All dimensions must include the
trailer or cradle or any masts that may be along side

• CMA-CGM
• MSC
These carriers have the capability to ship your yacht loaded onto flat racks, on the
deck of their cargo ships.
This seems to be the least popular method, but the most cost effective.
The yachts can be loaded onto cradles and then loaded onto the flat racks that are
then loaded by crane onto the vessel.
The yacht can then be either “splashed-down”, off loaded directly into the water or
offloaded onto the dock for road transport.
14. METHODS OF TRANSPORT
FLAT RACK CARRIERS (CONTINUED)

16. CE MARKING
CE MARKING
The CE marking (an acronym for the French "Conformite Europeenne")
certifies that a product has met EU health, safety, and environmental
requirements, which ensure consumer safety. Manufacturers in the
European Union (EU) and abroad must meet CE marking requirements
where applicable in order to market their products in Europe. For a list
of countries that require the CE marking, see: CE Marking Countries. A
manufacturer who has gone through the conformity assessment
process, may affix the CE marking to the product. With the CE marking,
the product may be marketed throughout the EU. CE marking now
provides product access to 27 countries with a population of nearly 500
million.
17. CE MARKING
CE MARKING
Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive list of the products that
require a CE marking. Therefore, it is the manufacturer's responsibility
to determine if a product requires a CE marking. The "New Approach
Directives" are documents that contain the legislation issued by the
European Commission on the requirements that need to be met and
procedures that must be followed in order for a particular product to be
CE marked for sales in the EU.
18. CE MARKING
COUNTRIES THAT REQUIRE CE MARKING
Austria Hungary Poland
Belgium Iceland Portugal
Bulgaria Ireland Romania
Cyprus Italy Slovakia
Czech Republic Latvia Slovenia
Denmark Liechtenstein Spain
Estonia Lithuania Sweden
Finland Luxembourg Switzerland
France Malta Turkey
Germany Netherlands United Kingdom
Greece Norway
19. CE MARKING
CE MARKING – CONSULTANTS/ORDERING STANDARDS
In the slides to follow are some sources for ordering standards and for locating CE
marking consultancy services.
A firm with an "*" indicates that in addition to providing standards, it can also help
clients obtain the CE marking and it has affiliations with EU competent body labs
and/or EU notified bodies.
