Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-cantered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. Students learn about a concept or subject by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem. PBL contrasts with paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts or portrays a smooth path to knowledge by instead posing questions, problems or scenarios.
Students(6th-8th) of SNIS also learned many scientific concepts through PBL which strengthened their knowledge and skills in Science and made learning more interesting.
They also displayed their work in the form of models, charts and presentations to the students of grades 4 and 5 to motivate them and create more interest in Science.
Let’s celebrate this Mandela International Day by remembering the great man’s achievements in working towards conflict resolution, democracy, human rights, peace, and reconciliation.
This International Justice Day, let’s appreciate the efforts of all the courts of the world in administering justice. Let’s strive to put an end to all injustices in the world and fight for peace and happiness.
Malala Day’ is celebrated internationally to commemorate the efforts of the education activist and noble prize winner Malala Yousafzai. She has been constantly fighting all odds and working towards ensuring that every girl, everywhere gets access to education.Let us join hands towards ensuring that every girl child gets educated.
This World Population Day, let’s join hands to spread awareness about the global population issues, including the importance of gender equality, human rights, family planning, and more.
The last UOI unit was exciting and educational for the Grade 2 and 3 students, they were involved in a series of activities which enriched and enhanced their knowledge. Right from on campus surveys on waste management to making handmade paper bags with the waste collected from all the classes to field-trips, the students learned and had fun all the way. The field trip to a farm taught the students all about organic farming, recycling and how to a develop sustainable energy practices. It was a fun field-trip, one both grades will remember fondly.
The power of a dad in a child’s life is unmatched. Dads teach them patience, kindness, strength & courage. Wishing all the wonderful fathers a very Happy Father’s Day!!!
Students in the girls' dormitory of SNIS got the wonderful opportunity to visit the ‘Nativity Children’s home and interact with the children there. Before the outing, the girls excitedly prepared for the visit and came up with different ideas to entertain the children. They choreographed dance performances by themselves and even came up with interactive games. The boarding students of SNIS took along with them 3 boxes of clothes and toys to share with the children.
On reaching there, the girls received a delightful surprise from the orphanage girls as they performed a welcome song. The boarders got to know them a little more and discovered how ambitious they are with many of the girls aspiring to be doctors and engineers and even lawyers. They danced with our students and enthusiastically watched the performances.
It was a visit to remember and cherish. It exemplified all that SNIS stands for, nurturing students into successful, responsible and ethical leaders who can brighten the world with compassion, curiosity and creative fire.
Garbage has become a serious problem in the world today. Only one out of every six water bottles ends up in the recycling bin, the rest are sent to landfills or contribute to devastating ocean pollution. Teaching children to care for the environment is a learning experience that is an important part of growing up. It gives them skills in respect, empathy, appreciation, responsibility, and teaches them about consequences.
Grade 2 has been inquiring into waste and its devastating effects on the planet. Our students have been learning how each of us can help lessen the burden on the planet and save marine and land animals by recycling, reusing and reducing your overall consumption of plastic and other waste. Recycling is one of the best ways for us to have a positive impact on the world in which we live.
Learning by example is one of the most important ways to discover. In an attempt to learn through doing, the students enthusiastically participated in the ‘Best out of Waste’ activity. It was amazing to see the different innovative ideas the students came up with making the activity and enriching and a worthwhile experience. They’ll have a greater appreciation for the way things work, and a better understanding of our precious ecosystem.
This World Environment Day, let's strive to create awareness about how important taking care of our environment is. The UN theme for World Environment Day, 2019 is 'Air Pollution'
Let's celebrate this International Biodiversity Day by understanding and increasing our awareness of the various biodiversity issues. This year's International Biodiversity Day focuses on biodiversity as the foundation for our food and health and as a key catalyst to transforming food systems and improving human wellbeing. Let us all join hands towards protecting our ecosystem and the biodiversity.
The SNIS ESL Camp April 2019 drew to a close on Monday 29th April with a grand display of the students' experiences since they started their journey on April 3rd. The Valedictory function was a clear demonstration of the visitors' delight to have experienced new learning as they presented their reflections, scintillating dance performances and a repertoire of musical talent show which included songs, instrumental music performances and of course beat boxing display which left the audience spellbound. The program ended with the distribution of awards and certificates. We will miss their enthusiasm and their zeal for learning and will surely carry them in our hearts.
Project-based learning is a dynamic classroom approach in which students actively explore real world problems and challenges and acquire a deeper knowledge on the subject.
MYP students of SNIS apply the same learning technique for Chemistry & Biology as well.
On one such project, students were asked to came up with some interesting experiments and explain the principle behind that, which was part of their assessment for RT-4.
Some of the experiments were:
Invisible ink experiment, fractional distillation, Volcano experiment, Kidney model, Chromatography of chlorophyll, reaction of aspirin with oil and water and many more.
Students enjoyed their projects a lot and showed s lot of enthusiasm while preparing for it.
Grade 7 were introduced to conversion of length, mass and capacity. The students of grade 7 presented their understanding of the unit through presentations. They were divided into 4 groups. Each group chose a country, like China, India, Mesopotamia etc., wherein they researched about the chosen civilization/country's history of unit conversion, when those civilizations started having measuring units for commodities etc. Students also presented some fun facts about unit conversions practiced in these countries.
Grades 8 and 9 also attended the presentation and actively participated in a small quiz conducted by each group. The students completely enjoyed the activities and learned a lot from it.
This World Health Day, let’s focus on encouraging everyone and ourselves to take better steps towards improving health. With the kind of lifestyle we lead today, it’s important to create health awareness among children and adults, alike. Let’s celebrate this World Health Day by promising to eat healthy, exercise well and maintain a positive state of mind.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Exploring International Mindedness through the theme “Who we are”
1. International mindedness is an important aspect of IB. It means to respect other’s culture, tradition
and opinion even if we do not follow the same. An IB programme not only promotes “International
Mindedness” to students of other counties studying in schools but creates International Mindedness
in the thought process of the students who learn in an IB Programme.
To create international mindedness in our young minds, the unit related to the concept on religion
seemed to be a seamless fit for our fourth graders. The word religion creates sensitivity amongst
people anywhere around the world. To inquire into religion in PYP unit of inquiry for 6 weeks for 9-
10 years old, was a formidable thought. We respect the parent community and their beliefs,
partners in the education of their child. I know that International mindedness cannot be taught
explicitly to the students; it becomes visible through their learning and inquiries.
Most of the students in my class come from families who are open-minded to learning about other
religions. Students were given opportunity to choose a religion of their choice to gain an insight and
perspective about it. To provoke interest in the unit, I gathered artefacts from 3 major religions and
used the visible thinking routine ‘I see-I think-I wonder’ to capture students’ interests.
To create a personal connection in the unit of inquiry and arouse the interest students were asked to
bring artefacts from their religion and talk about its importance to their peers. This to provide insight
into other religions and customs.
2. As our unit focussed on developing respect and tolerance among students, I planned a field trip to
religious temples to help my students to have first-hand information about that religion. Students
visited Mahabodhi society- a Buddhist temple in Bangalore where the students learned about the
Buddhist ways of praying by bowing 3 times; their festivals; and belief to forego worldly pleasures to
become a Buddhist monk.
We also visited Gurudwara – a Sikh temple, where students showed their respect towards Sikhism
by washing legs and wearing a scarf before entering the temple. Boys and girls sat separately and
bowed before the holy Grant, which is the holy book of Sikhs. Following the traditions at the place of
worship provides an opportunity for students to not only know the customs and rituals of that
religion but also to respect them.
Further into our unit of inquiry, we analysed the beliefs and values of different religions to see how
similar and different they are to each other. We made a mind map with ‘religion’ in the centre and
different religions beliefs and values sprouting from it. Students made a connection that even
3. though beliefs are different, values like love, empathy, honesty, and respect are similar. Students
reflected that all the religions promoted equality.
This lead to another inquiry when one student came up with a question that if Islam promotes
equality, then why women are not allowed to enter the mosque? As a follower of different religion, I
found this difficult to answer. At the same time, I was overjoyed with the way my students were
reflecting and asking questions at the analysing level in the bloom’s taxonomy model.
To answer the questions raised by my students, I had organised skype session with a learned friend
of mine who follows Islam religion. Students talked about their burning question of inequality in
Islam religion. The guest speaker clarified that the holy book Quran never forbid women from
entering mosque, but the interpreters of the holy book interpreted the way they wanted women in
the society to behave. This gave an assurance to the students that Islam religion is equally rich in its
values compared to other religions.
4. As we were nearing the end of the unit, students summarized their understanding of beliefs and
values of different religions by saying that we can follow whichever religion we want to but if we
follow the common values like love, respect, empathy and honesty we can live in peace with each
other. They presented this idea in the assembly to the whole school on International Peace Day, by
dressing in clothing that represents various religions, by reciting the hymns of that religion and
beliefs and values of it. Students also made a visual representation of their learning in the form a
chart. They showcased the beliefs and values of different religions and in the centre wrote the
values on the dove, which symbolises peace.
This unit has brought inquiry and analysis into the different religions of the world and the values
they nurture. By facilitating inquiry to enrich their understanding and deepen their conceptual
learning I supported global citizens of tomorrow to value and respect other people’s ideas,
perspectives, culture, traditions, beliefs and values. I believe, this is what true International
Mindedness is.
