This document discusses exploiting academic vocabulary. It begins by describing the Academic Word List (AWL), which comprises 570 word families that make up 10% of words in academic texts. It notes shortfalls of the AWL, including that it does not address discipline-specific or collocational vocabulary. Practical suggestions are provided for creating discipline-specific word lists using corpus tools and academic texts from a given field. Creating exercises using target vocabulary in context can help students learn important words for their studies.
