An examination of the current data portability design patterns used in Social Media sites. Looking at a possible new Open Stack concept to create true plug and play interfaces for user to exchange data.
When your advocacy web site has a message that is in opposition to someone else's, it can be hard to get the word out. You usually don't have the budget to advertise, and your target audience may be predisposed to not visit your site. Or they may not even be aware of the issue you are raising to even ask the right questions. This talk reviews techniques that use the programmable web (XML, KML, RSS, geocoding and microformats) to get your message in front of people via third-party websites. By allowing your data to flow freely, you can catch people's attention in unexpected ways. the practical reuse of social media data and how it can create better user experience. Combining Google’s Social Graph API with open data sources like RSS and Microformats to provide a wealth information about your users.

Googles rich snippets and creation of schema.org have brought semantic mark up into sharp focus for the SEO industry. The semantic mark up technologies like Microformats, RDFa and Microdata can seem complex and the implementation choices unclear. Glenn will explain the different technologies how to chose one and demonstrate how to mark up HTML so it is picked up by the search engines. Finally, he will take look at the future of how Google could mine social networks data to aid search recommendation within results.
With some of the newer HTML5 API’s it is now possible to redesign how your web pages interact with the desktop. Web pages are too often little islands that fail to interact well with the wider user interface of our devices. This talk will explain the new Drag/Drop and File APIs, demonstrating how to make web pages more equal in the world of applications.

Designing a REST API is difficult, and relies on your understanding of the developers and their use case. This presentation talks through Socialtext, Netflix and LinkedIn's APIs and decisions they made.
Keeping up will all of the new (such as blogs & Twitter) along with the old (such as search results and news items) information resources can be difficult these days. However, with RSS you can receive feeds of new material from many different locations into one easy-to-use Web site or program. In this NCompass Live session, our Technology Innovation Librarian, Michael Sauers, will give an overview of why and how you can use RSS to receive timely information with a minimum of effort.
These are slides of a tutorial at ECIR by Gerard de Melo and Katja Hose.
Search is currently undergoing a major paradigm shift away from the traditional document-centric “10 blue links” towards more explicit and actionable information. Recent advances in this area are Google’s Knowledge Graph, Virtual Personal Assistants such as Siri and Google Now, as well as the now ubiquitous entity-oriented vertical search results for places, products, etc. Apart from novel query understanding methods, these developments are largely driven by structured data that is blended into the Web Search experience. We discuss efficient indexing and query processing techniques to work with large amounts of structured data. Finally, we present query interpretation and understanding methods to map user queries to these structured data sources.
The latest browser APIs now make it possible to redesign how your web pages interact with other applications. Web pages are too often little islands that fail to play well with the wider user interfaces of our devices. This talk will explore the possibilities from Drag and Drop to Web Intents, demonstrating how to make web pages more equal in the world of applications.
Choosing the Right Words - Web Intents/ActionsGlenn Jones
Chrome and Mozilla are working on a new concept called Web Intents/Actions. It extends the hyperlink idea, allowing sites to share features and functionality. A big part of the idea revolves around creating a collection of verbs (calls to action). I want to do a workshop, explaining the Web Intents concept and then ask the following questions:
How do we define 'the right words'?
How do you sort services into collections under a word?
How do you come up with calls to action that work with the broadest audience?

Can your website be your API and real lifeGlenn Jones
This talk to tries and answer the question Drew McLellan posed a year ago in his presentation Can Your Website be Your API? I used some of my experience building ufXtract and parsing social networks information to see if it is possible in the real world.

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.
Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
