Elemental analysis provides critical information for the evaluation of soil fertility and the elucidation of nutrient cycles. The soil C/N ratio is an important parameter for judging soil fertility, S concentrations are connected to fertilizer inputs and atmospheric deposition, and C concentrations are indicative for soil organic matter content. Because soils are inhomogeneous by nature, sample amount plays in important role in their analysis. This webinar presents the dedicated solutions offered by Elementar for the elemental analysis of soils.
The hyphenation of elemental analysis and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS) has opened up entirely new possibilities in a multitude of application areas ranging from environmental research, climate reconstruction or archeology to resource exploration, product authentication or criminology. High performance elemental analysis, free of measurement artefacts at all times, is key to the high data quality needed in isotope ratio determination.
This webinar presents the dedicated solutions offered by Elementar for the EA-IRMS analysis of all organic as well as a multitude of inorganic sample matrices.
The concentration of sulfur and nitrogen in oil is an important parameter for the evaluation of the product quality. Due to the increasing importance of biofuels which contain much less sulfur or nitrogen than fuel from mineral oil, one can observe an increasing demand for lower detection limits for both, sulfur and nitrogen. The newly developed trace SN cube by Elementar Analysensysteme GmbH provides laboratories with a reliable tool for the analysis.
The analytical principle is based on high temperature combustion. Sulfur is converted into SO2 which is detected by UV fluorescence, nitrogen is converted into NO and detected by chemoluminescence detection, thus providing full compliance with the international standards ASTM D 4629 (1), ASTM D 5453 (2) and ASTM D 6290 (3). The effective combustion process ensures a 100% recovery of all sulfur and nitrogen compounds. This can be achieved by two separated channels for sulfur and nitrogen which allows the optimal control of the digestion process for each element. The optimization of the combustion process ensures a soot-free combustion without the need for a sophisticated control of the injection process. Therefore the sample can be injected at rapid speed, resulting in sharp peaks and an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore the easy construction of the combustion tube allows the direct injection of gaseous samples from a gas-tight syringe. It will be demonstrated during the webinar that catalyst-aided combustion is essential to achieve full recovery and matrix-independent oxidation.

Sampling methods using sorbent traps have been used extensively over the past 20 years for speciating mercury in flue gas. The Flue Gas Adsorbent Mercury Speciation (FAMS) method is an example. This method has gained widespread acceptance as the preferred alternative for mercury speciation due to its simplicity, sensitivity, and repeatability. However, FAMS and other sorbent trap methods were developed primarily for measurements made in the relatively clean, dry, and cool flue gas present downstream of the particulate control devices. Application of sorbent traps to measure mercury in the high temperatures and high particulate loadings that exist upstream of the APC system or the saturated drop-laden gas downstream of FGD requires modifications to the approach. This presentation addresses the use of sorbent traps to speciate mercury throughout the air pollution control system of a coal-fired utility. Specific sampling approaches to accommodate testing at high temperatures, high dust loadings, and saturated gas streams are discussed. Data are presented for measurements made from points ranging from near the exit of the boiler to the outlet of a wet scrubber. We discuss the interpretation of the results and examine metrics used to assess data quality.

Callide oxyfuel research project, Part 1: Removal of SOx, NOx and mercury gas...Global CCS Institute
To highlight the research and achievements of Australian researchers, the Global CCS Institute with ANLEC R&D will hold a series of webinars throughout 2016. Each webinar will highlight a specific ANLEC R&D research project and the relevant report found on the Institute’s website. This was the second webinar of the series, which focused on experiments quantifying and optimising the removal of SOx, NOx and mercury gases using compressed gaseous slip streams from the CPU as part of the Callide Oxyfuel Project.
The Callide Oxyfuel Project in central Queensland, Australia, has demonstrated carbon capture using oxyfuel technology on a retrofitted 30 MWe boiler. The project comprised of 2 x 330 t/day air separation units, a 30 MWe oxy-fuel boiler and a 75 t/day CO2 capture plant. The plant was commissioned in 2012 and operated for three years achieving nominally 10,000 hours of industrial operation in oxy-combustion mode.
The project has been able to demonstrate CO2 capture rates from the Oxyfuel flue gas stream to the CO2 capture plant in excess of 85%, and producing a high quality CO2 product suitable for geological storage. In addition, other benefits observed from the oxy-firing and CO2 capture demonstration have included: (i) increased boiler combustion efficiency; (ii) greater than 50% reduction in stack NOx mass emission rates; and (iii) almost complete removal of all toxic gaseous emissions including SOx, NOx, particulates and trace elements from the flue gas stream in the CO2 capture plant (CPU).
This webinar provided a technical presentation of experiments quantifying and optimising the removal of SOx, NOx and mercury gases using compressed gaseous slip streams from the CPU, complemented by plant measurements by the University Of Newcastle, supported by Australian National Low Emission R&D. This webinar was presented by Professor Terry Wall and Dr Rohan Stanger from The University of Newcastle, Australia.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
