Gerald completed an internship at the Health Promotion Center of St. Mary-Corwin Hospital. As part of his internship, he created a 4-week fitness class tailored for associates who lacked fitness experience. The light workouts focused on cardio, core strength, and lower body exercises. Gerald marketed the class through flyers and in-person conversations to generate interest from associates. The goal was to provide a gentle introduction to exercise and build fitness foundations for future training.

ORGANIZATIONSCLIENTELE
The clientele atthe HPCis made upof the associateswhoworkin the hospital andthuscontaina wide varietyof
classifications. A large portionof the associatesof the hospital have anadvanceddegree of some kind. The HPC usually
workswithclientswhoare betweenthe agesof 35-50. Of the patientsIhave observed, the popularleisureinterestsof
thisclienteleinclude some formof cardiotolose weight, alittle bitof muscle strengthening, andgettingridof their
peskybackpain. The attitude of most of the clientsispositive intermsof motivationandwantingtomake a change in
theircurrentlifestyle. Manyof the clientsare aware thatexercise isgoodforthemand mostof themopenlyadmitthey
do notexercise oftenenough, yettheysimplylackthe knowledgeof whattodo inthe gymor how to finda workout
that bestfitsthem.
PROJECTEXPERIENCE
While atthe St.Mary-CorwinHPC, I undertook the responsibilityof avarietyof projectsthroughoutthe internship
experience. However,Iwill be focusingonone specificproject.Myprojectconsistedof afitness class. The fitnessclass
was tailoredtofitassociateswhowere notata highlevel of fitnessorwholackedthe muscle conditioningtoparticipate
inKiley’sadvancedclass. The purpose of thisprojectwasto create a 4 weekworkoutschedulewhichwould consistof
lightcardioand lightmuscle stabilityworkinordertoentice people tocome downtothe HPC to workout and learn
abouttheirfitness.The workoutwasclearedbythe supervisorandmetthe fitnessguidelinesandsafetyprotocolssetby

PROGRAMEXPLANATION
We wantedtoconstruct a workoutthat wassolelybasedonincreasingthe stabilityof the clients’
musclesandcreatinga stable foundationtobuildoff inthe future.Forexample, the populationIworked
withconsistedof people whowereworkinginanoffice settinghunchedoverakeyboardformore than
6 hoursat a time,complainedof lowerbackpain,andhadthe motivationtoexercise butnotat a high
intensity.Basedonthe clients’needs,Ibuiltaworkoutthatconsistedof ab workoutsinorderto
strengthenthe core andrelieve the lowerbackpain, hipworkoutsinorderto strengthenthe muscles
whichare beingsaton thusnot gettingthe appropriate bloodflowornotin the correct posture during
the day, andlightcardioto increase the efficiencyof the heart, andinmy opinion, helpsclientsfeel the
mostfit inthe longrun withsubstantial benefits.
Afterclearingthe workoutwithmysupervisor, Iwastaskedwithconstructingameansof marketing the
newprogram.I achievedthis goal throughone approach:creatinga flyer.Thisflyerwouldbe placedin
all of the departmentmailboxes andIwouldalsodosocial marketingby goingto everysectionof the
hospital andtalkingtothe associatesand explainingwhatthe classwill entail, whatthe workoutwill
consistsof,durationof the class,and whatthey’re hopingtoachieve inthe 4 weekendeavor. Venturing
out to the hospital andtalkingtoassociates seemedtobe the mostsuccessful tacticsimplydue tothe
person-to-personinteraction.The people whowere interestedwere able toaskquestionsonthe spot
and getto become acquaintedwith the people whowouldbe runningthe class.Ithinkitiscrucial for
people to have some sortof engagementfromthe trainers, because the trainerswill be able toexhibit
theirenergyandexcitementforthe class, whichassociateswould tendtopickupon and are more likely
to come to the class.
AnotherreasonIwantedto start thisclassis simplydue tothe lackof a mediumbetween the advanced
fitnessclassand simply goingtothe gymon theirownaccord. Thisclass served asa “happy medium”or
transitiontounderstandingfitness andgettingstartedinthe gym.Thisclasswould serve asa small taste
of exercising,butmainlytoeducate the associatesonpropertechnique,muscle function,andkeepinga
positive mindset whileexercising.Manyof the associateswere intimidatedby the advancedfitnessclass
and didn’thave the motivationtogoto the gym bythemselvessolely because they wereafraidof injury
or lacked the knowledge of whatworkoutstodoor how to do them and especiallyprogression.
Duringthe workouts, (whichwere runbybothinterns) one internwouldbe timing andwatchingthe
clientstoensure they’re makingcorrectmovementswhilethe otherinternperformedthe workoutwith
the clients.Eventually, the internsbecame muchmore efficientandwere able toperformthe workouts
withthe clients, time the workout, andensure correcttechnique.Afterthe firstweek, some clientssaid
that the workoutwastoo easy to complete, some saiditwasjustright, anda few saiditwas somewhat
difficult.Afterdiscussingthe concernwithmysupervisor,she suggestedswitching toa timedsystemin
whichthe clientshave 30 secondsto performthe set.Thiswouldcovera varietyof intensitiesandwould
be much more of an individualizedworkoutbecausethe clientscouldperformthe taskattheirlevel of
comfortfor the duration of the time limit.Afterthe adjustment, the classesbecamealotsmootherand
flowedverywell.

PROGRAMIMPROVEMENT
As I reflectonmyinternshipprojectandanalyze myefforts, itiscleartome that I gave thisprojectthe
full extentof myeffort.Iwasfocusedonmy goalsandI believe Iachievedthemtothe fullestof my
ability byremainingfriendlyandsocial withthe clients,regardlessof theirperformance.However,I
couldhave improvedmyactionspriorto the internshipbytaking acourse in personal trainingorathletic
trainingas part of my general electives.Takingacollege classon personal training, aspartof my elective
credits,wouldhave benefitedme throughoutmyinternshipandwouldhave increasedmyabilityto
learnthe different exercise techniquesused aswellasclientprogressionandinjuryprevention.
Additionally,priorexperience inhostingafitnessclasswouldhave beenincrediblyvital, because Icould
have begunthe fitnessclass earlyinmyinternship. The knowledgeacquiredthroughapreviouscourse
on personal trainingwouldhave enabled me toparticipate inmore hands-onsituationsatmyinternship
site.Furthermore,suchinformationcouldhave provedvaluable whilecreatingthe exerciseclass I
designedforthe associatesof St.Mary-Corwin.
In hindsight,I canalsosee I shouldhave focusedmy mainprojecton thisfitnessclass andensuredthat
all of myresourceswere inorderpriorto the program implementation. Thiswouldhave benefitedmy
learningand I couldhave focusedmyeffortsmore preciselyonthatone project, butmyinvolvementin
a majorityof the other events fromeachmonth preventedme fromdoingso.
At the beginningof myinternship,Iwasrequiredto maintainalotof the digital andphysical recordsof
the clientsdowninthe HPC withthe supervisionandguidance of mysite supervisor. The objective of
the maintenance wastoensure thatinformationwasorganizedformysupervisorwhenshe neededthe
informationformore importantmatters.Understandingquickexcel,word,andgeneral computertricks
assistedme inbecomingmore efficientinthe entire performance. These techniqueswerederivedfrom
the MicrosoftExcel classes.Due to the fact that I hadlittle tono experience performing personal
trainingor fitnessclasses,Istruggledwith understandingmostof the general conceptsof ASCMsimply
because Ididn’thave anyof those courses;however, mysupervisorwasmore thanwillingtoshare her
knowledge andbookstoassistme ingainingthe knowledge andcatchingupto understandalittle bitof
personal training.Constructingthe workoutwaseasierintermsof targetingacertainmuscle group
whichI learnedaboutinKinesiologyaswell astheiractual movementsandfunctions, thatwayIcould
accuratelypickand choose whatexercisestohave inorderto improve the clients.
ORGANIZATION EVALUATION
The organizationdoesanactive surveyingsystem.Forexample,duringthe exercise,takingaminute to
ask the clientshowthe workoutfeelsforthemusinganRPEscale. I believe thatusinganactive grading
systemiscrucial in an exercise environmentsimplybecauseaperson’sstatuscanchange within30
secondsof an exercise.Usingthattactic, the trainerismore likelytochange andadapt the client’s
workoutinorderto benefitthemthe most.
